When we decided to purchase this headset, it was after purchasing (2) defective AT&T headsets. The Plantronics headset offers a sleek design, comfortable wearing adjustments, and quality sound. Well worth the purchase!!

5Excellent product for those who know what they're doing!
By john
While I didn't order it through Amazon.com, I use this at work (IT Helpdesk) and could not be happier. Out of the box, easy hookup, worked perfectly, works great with my office Altigen VOIP phone system at work, not a single issue. Can control volume/mute without even looking at the device, no echoes, just great setup for those looking for a hands-free solution for work. Has multiple audio controls as well as wideband/narrowband audio switch. Yes you do not get a handset lifter to automatically answer, but seriously, read through and you would know that so all the reviews pointing that out, they didn't read the description. Keep up the great work!

5Dispatcher loves this.
By Amazon Customer
Dispatcher wanted a hands free headset so she was free to use the computer while on the phone.
This cordless unit was recommended by ShoreTel as a mate for the VOIP system we purchased from them.
Good Recommendation. Sound is clear and crisp. Cord free distance is more than adequate.
The unit runs all day on a battery charge.
Dispatcher is happy with the device on her head all day.
I'd say it's a winner.
Plantronics has been in the business awhile and knows what they are doing.

5Yes, it IS perfect!
By She is
I have never worn such a perfectly fitting headset in three decades. It is snug without being tight. The earphones are convex (rounded out) so that the pressure is distributed more gently over the rims of the ears while at the same time focusing the sound right into your ears and getting the best filtration of outside ambient noise (without shutting it out entirely, which is important to me, as I do need to hear what is going on in airports and at home, though I want it pushed into the background).

The sound coming through the earphones and through the microphone are both superb -- clear, deep and resonant speech, reception and recording. It's hard to believe how good it is, considering this is, technically speaking, a "low-end", light-weight, computer headset. If only it were collapsible/foldable, too! (There are other versions that are.)

The cable is super-long, about 7' all let out, and a bit thicker than most, with solid seals at every connection, including the in-line controls, so it doesn't look like they will pull apart or be damaged very easily, which is usually what goes wrong first with many headsets.

As for the packaging, it's one of those super-tough, vandal-proof, hard-plastic enclosures, BUT this one has a hinge-seam at the bottom that is easy to cut, unlike most such packages.

All told, I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of this headset and extreeeemely pleased with my purchase at a ridiculous bargain price the day I found it.

5Perfect item for me.
By Zuz
When I bought a new PC several years ago, I signed on to Skype service to communicate with my children who live overseas. With the PC microphone and speakers, the sound quality was marginally adequate. And moving around in my chair affected the sound from my microphone heard by the other party. I decided try the Plantronics stereo headset based on information gleaned from various sources. During my first use of the headset, the other party commented on how clear my voice sounded. The result was the same at my end. And the long cord provided with the headset gave me ample room to move about during the conversation. For my purposes, it has worked out perfectly.

4FInally!!! Binaural Headset I can use while on the treadmill.
By Rikki B. Schwartz
It took me several HOURS of searching online to finally find a headset (with good reviews) that would allow me to talk on the phone while on the treadmill! Who would have thought it would be that difficult to find a) a **BINAURAL** headset (wherein BOTH of my ears are covered, thereby cancelling out the very loud noises of my fan and treadmill); and b) a **noise-reducing** microphone (again, reducing the fan and treadmill noises for my listener). I received it with great anticipation, and after playing with the adjustments a bit (found that earphone volume all the way up, but microphone volume at "medium" allows me AND the listener to have optimal reception), I can now talk on the phone and walk or run on the treadmill without any problems. It was worth the search - especially for the price. But DON'T FORGET everyone (if you plan to use these for your telephone) to get the "Headset Buddy Adapter: PC Headset to Phone Adapter PC35-PH25" - which converts the *dual* 3.5mm male ends of these headphones to a *single* 2.5mm male end (to fit into your phone's single female connector). Also, don't forget, that if you plug everything in and you can't hear your phone's dialtone, you probably have the right male jack plugged into the left female connector of the Adapter and vice versa (which I may or may not have done ;0)

3Get the M50
By Daniel Will-Harris
I had a Plantronics M50 headset that I called "the best bluetooth headset in the world." It could do many things, but fall into a puddle and continue to work was not one of them (and it never claimed to be waterproof--oh wait, after two days of drying out, it works again!).

Since I use a headset for everything (all calls, GPS, listening to music), I needed one right away so I went to BestBuy and bought one of these. It's small, light, and I was surprised that the earpiece actually fit and stayed in my ear--oh, it just fell out while I was talking, so I guess I need the ear loop for safety, can't have it falling out while I'm driving--that's dangerous).

LIKE:

Pairing was brilliant--it literally talks you through the process for Android or iPhone.

As with the M50, it talks to you when you turn it on, change the volume, lose or regain the connection. It's great to have these plain-English status prompts.

It tells you the approximate talk time in hours, which is convenient (but not entirely necessary, as the battery meter shows up automatically on smart phones--and perhaps not all that accurate--first it said I had four hours talk time, I talked for 15 minutes, then it said I had three).

When the phone rings, the headset prompts you to say "answer" or "ignore" and that actually works.

Holding down the volume button for two seconds mutes the mic, that's handy.

Vocalyst: I used this Dial2Do service in the past when I didn't have a smartphone and found it very useful--it will read your email to you, let you record reminders (it used to transcribe them, now that's an extra-cost option), read news from various sources such as the New York Times. The service normally costs $25 a year, and a free year is included with this headset.

DISLIKES:
My biggest complaint is that despite this having two mics, the resulting sound is tinny--as if it's cutting out. Perhaps this is part of the noise reduction, but when used in a quiet room, it just makes you sound more robotic than you probably are. I compared the sound from my M50 and this M165 back to back in voicemail I left myself, and the M5 is clearly more solid, richer sounding--and louder.

The same is true for listening volume--which was louder on the M50 (perhaps because it fits more snugly into the ear and makes a tighter connection)

The button, which looks like an iPhone home button, is fine--but on the M50, the entire face was the button, and that was easier to press. And pressing The M165's button pushes it into your ear, which is uncomfortable.

It is not as comfortable in the ear as the M50. That fit so well that I'd forget it was there. With this I keep feeling like something's stuck in my ear.

The MyHeadset app is not very useful. It lets you do a sound check and record, and it has pairing instructions but it doesn't have all instructions and I quickly deleted it. Just the documentation in PDF format for iBooks would be more useful.

Now, I'm a fan of Plantronics products--so I don't understand how the Plantronics M50 can be the best bluetooth headset on the planet, and the M165, which theoretically should be 110 "better" is not as good.

I'm so glad my M50 is working again--and I may buy another as a backup just in case, because it truly is the best.

5Another great Plantronics headset
By atmj
I've had the predecessor to this headset the M155 Marque, and several other plantronics headsets. I never intended to replace those as, I was happy with them, but the Vine program has given me the opportunity to upgrade, so well, I just had to see what's new. For the purposes of comparison my phone is an over 6 month old HTC Rezound smart phone.

In summary the short version:
Pros:
+ Headset fits great and doesn't fall out of my ear
+ Headset is loud enough
+ Long battery life and telling me what is left each time I turn it on is nice
+ Headset picks up the phone well. At least to 10 feet (in the same room), reception was good
+ Voice prompts for being unconnected or connected are great..
+ Seamless pairing

Cons:
- Saying Answer to pick up has not worked well. Predecessor was great.
- Pairing instructions were wrong
- Vocalyst is pointless on a smart phone

The long version follows:

GREAT FIT:
This headset fits well and works well. What is unique about this headset over another is the interesting in ear retention feature. The predecessor I owned had something similar and I loved it. It is one of the few that works well with glasses and doesn't get goofed up by long hair. Prior headsets either competed with my glasses for behind the ear space, or the retention arm would be caught by my hair; flipping out of my ear with a simple movement of my hair.

LOUD ENOUGH OR CUTS NOISE ENOUGH:
I find the headset loud enough to use in the car and also to walk over a 2 story non-covered bridge (over 4 lanes of rush hour traffic) that I walk over every day. I don't know if it is the noise cancellation or the good fit that makes this possible. Either way it works.

PICKING UP WHEN I SAY ANSWER HAS NOT WORKED:
The only difficulty I have had, is with the headset picking up when I say "answer" in the car. I'm not sure why I was not understood. I believe this happened a few times. The prior headset was great at this. I will try this some more before I consider this an issue. Instead I had to push the headset button which was no hardship.

LONG BATTERY LIFE AND INFO ON BATTERY DURATION IS GREAT:
Like it's predecessor, this battery lasts a long time. Even longer that the prior headset per the literature. Mine is always in my purse and when I turn it on, it tells me what time is left. That is a great feature, as then I have a good idea when to charge it. I like to run stuff out, before I charge as usually this improves battery life, so this information is important.

GREAT RECEPTION OF PHONE TO HEADSET
Each time I have used the headset, either I had the phone on my belt buckle, or in my car's beverage receptacle. Anywhere from 2 feet to 3 feet from the head set. There was no issue. In fact at home, I have left the phone on a dresser and walked over 10 feet away with only a slight degradation of quality. That's what clued me in to the fact, I had left the phone somewhere.

VOICE INFO IS GREAT
Like many people I don't leave my bluetooth on. I like that this headset tells me that it does not have a phone connected, if there is none detected. It reminds me to turn on my blue tooth. Also, this headset tells me when it is connected and it can be paired to more than one device. This can come in handy.

PAIRING WAS SEAMLESS
Pairing this phone as well as it's predecessor went well. Unfortunately in both cases, the instructions of where to find the settings to pair were wrong. I know Android can be like that and vary with devices and my HTC Rezound might not be in the sets they tested their instructions with. However many smart phone users know how to do this and I was not too concerned.

VOCALYST IS NOT SOMETHING I WOULD USE:
For Vocalyst, I had tried that with the prior headset (my view is posted on Amazon) and it is a means of calling into a service to get access to your email, facebook etc. Essentially this service reads the content to you. As this burns minutes in my phone's call plan, it has no appeal to me. I tried it and that was enough for me. Since I have a smart phone, this is easy enough to check on this on the fly anyway. Maybe if I didn't have a smart phone or I needed constant access to my email, this would have more appeal.

MULTI-TASKING DEVICE:
Someone asked in a comment below, if this device could be simultaneously connected to two devices. The answer is Yes. I paired this headset to my iPad and connected it, then connected it to my cell phone. While listening to music on my iPad through the headset, I called my cellphone, which interrupted the music to notify me of the call...This was cool.

CAN REMAINED CONNECTED WHEN PLUGGED IN
Another person asked if this headset could remain connected while being plugged in. I checked this out and it could. I had the headset connected to the phone and then plugged it into the charger, where it remained actively connected. This is a mixed blessing because if you forget the headset is connected and your phone rings and you answer it without the headset in, you might be confused as to why you hear nothing. Once you figure out what is happening, I hope you have a means of switching to speaker (my smartphone does). I once left my headset in my purse connected and wondered why I kept getting these soundless calls...

This series of headsets are great.

5Great Headset
By Amazon Customer
Plantronics M165 Bluetooth Headset / B0093TSSGW

I have owned the Plantronics M155 Bluetooth Headset for over a year now, and love it so much that I bought this M165 version to switch between while the other is charging.

These headsets are light-weight and very comfortable for me. (Whether they will work with your ears is largely a function of the individual, but for me these are the most comfortable headsets I've owned, and I've never had them fall out or slip from my ear.) The power switch is on the side -- you simply slide the switch to turn the power off and on, and a recorded voice informs you how much "talk time" is left on the battery, which is a nice feature, as well as whether or not your phone is connected. The switch also has red and green coloring, so it's easy to tell at a glance whether the headset is on or off.

Having setup with a new phone just the other day, I can also note how delighted I am with the voice-guided pairing instructions -- I'm confident that even non-techies could set this headset up without any problems.

I've never bothered to use the voice-answer option, but I do like the single button that can be pressed to answer. I'e used several headsets in the past, and these Plantronics M155/M165 are the most crisp and clear that I've used; my mother (who has hearing problems) almost never has trouble hearing me on this, outside of the usual limitations like outdoor wind or a bad connection. Mostly I use these headsets to listen to audiobooks, though, and I love the extended battery life on these -- the M155 has 4 hours of non-stop listening time (and idles well), and the M165 has 7 hours. If the big talk button would also work as a Pause/Play button with my Audible app (it doesn't), then I'd be in heaven but I suppose we can't have everything.

The only downside to these headsets is perhaps that the range is not so hot. The product description seems to be claiming 33 feet (!); I'd peg it as closer to 8-12 feet. I have noticed that when I'm walking into work, I have to hold the phone in my hand or purse if I don't want my audiobook to cut out -- if I place it in my pants pocket, the connection seems to skip a little, but if my phone is in my relatively steadier hand or purse then the connection is rock solid.

I've loaded up a picture of the M155 and the M165 on the product images: the M155 is very slightly thinner and lighter than the M165, but my ear can't tell the difference. I'm thrilled with both models and highly recommend them.

4Not bad at ALL for the price
By Goose
This headset is actually not bad at all. What impressed me was the 50mm diameter speakers, while playing a game you will have no problem hearing little sounds like footsteps. Another thing I noticed is that these are actually not bad when it comes to noise cancellation. The build quality is not the best but don't forget this headset is under $40. If you somewhat are a gamer and you need an above average headset, these are for you. Trust me you will not regret buying these.

5Spectacular
By Kyuu
I previously had an $180 pair of headphones that were really comfortable, but the mic kept cutting in and out. GameComPro1 PC Gaming Headset A friend I play games with recommended Turtle Beach, and I saw this cheaper pair that had not yet released. I preordered and got it earlier than I expected, so I was pleased on the response time.

With the actual headphones, I've found two problems. One, I'm worried that the mic moves TOO much, but with the design, I'm not worried about the wires getting messed up with the dynamic link-type of movement. So it's plastic, but very protected. Then, the cups of the actual headphones clasp completely around my ears. At first it was painful to wear, but they've morphed to my large head since then, and fit wonderfully. So just the mic one is a really big deal, but that just means don't wrap and unwrap the mic and twist it every which way for long periods like any other mic.

But the sound quality is amazing, and the volume and mute buttons on the cord are higher up, compared to my last set which was at my feet pretty much. The cord is also not that long, so my chair isn't on the cord all the time. The plastic itself is pretty indestructible, my roommate stepped on it and it was fine. A bit big to take for handheld devices, especially with the mic, but wonderful for online gaming. The sound quality of my voice sounds great, better than my last pair. I would recommend this to anyone.

5Best Headset in its price bracket
By Tassadar
This is an excellent headset for its price, the best I have used for its price bracket. I have used extensivley the Turtle Beach X12, the Logitech Clearchat Premium, the Microsoft Lifechat lx-3000, and this Z11.

Why is it the best?

The second best are the X12's which are similar. The x12s are designed mainly for console gaming, but they work great on the PC too. The main issue I had with the X12's were that they were amplified which I personally do not like. There is a constant quiet hissing noise in the background due to the amplifier, which may not bother other people. The Z11's get louder then my ears can handle so amplification is not needed.

The Microsoft Lifechat lx-3000's were ok. They hurt my ears after about an hour on my head and the earcups did not breathe very good. The earcups like to popoff the headband sometimes too, but it was never an issue popping them back on. Also they had a very strange issue. They had a strange limited volume range. If I moved the volume slider all the way down (doesn't matter the computer or operating system I tried this on) a normal headset would be completely quiet, but these seemed like all the way down was around %33 volume which is strange.

The Logitech Clearchat Premiums were crap and I do not reccomend them. One of the earcups snapped off. They sounded worse then the other headsets, and they made my ears feel terrible. I do not reccomend these. The price was right however.

The Z11s are the best I have used for cheap headsets. They are the most comfortable by far (same as x12's). More importantly they are not amplified, so there is no hisssssss in the background constantly (and I think they sound a little more pure for some reason). They also use a 3.5mm jack instead of USB which I personally prefer. There is a handly volume dial on the cord. USB headsets have a similar volume dial, but it just controls the windows volume slider via software. This gives ultimatley the same effect, but the hardware dial on the z11's is faster, more accurate, and can be fine tuned better. These also have the 4-conductor 3.5mm that can be used it laptops and Ipads that use it. The mic sounds great, no issue there. It has excellent sound quality with great bass, better then the others I have mentioned.

These are not 100+ dollar premium headsets. They are built cheaply to reduce costs. However I do not ever feel like I will break these. The build quality is perfectly sufficient. Overall these are the best bang for your buck if you want a good set of headphones for gaming, don't want to spend a lot, and don't want to worry a nice set getting destroyed on accident.

5Lives up to usual Plantronics Quality
By Steve28804
I received apparently one of the first Plantronics CT14 cordless headset telephones, and the bottom line is that there are no big surprises, which means I like the telephone given that I had high expectations in view of my previous experience with Plantronics quality. I did not have either of the previous models, CT12 or CT10, so I cannot compare to those. However at my office for a number of years I have been using a CS10 cordless headset system which works with a multi-line telephone, and I have become quite addicted to using a headset. Based on what I think is an objective test, the audio quality and volume of the CT14 are superb. The way I test that is to call my own voicemail and, during the same call, switch between various telephones while leaving a message. Then I listen to the recorded message, again switching among various telephones. That lets me hear the quality for myself, without relying on a person I am talking to for a report.

One characteristic I am pleased to see included is that it is possible to chain dial from recorded numbers in the "phonebook." Thus, when I use a calling card with a 1-800 access number I can then access the PIN in the phonebook to have that dialed as well, followed by the number of the person I am calling. With some other telephones, after you have used the "phonebook" and the call is in progress, the directory scrolling keys change to a different function (e.g. volume) and all the remaining numbers must be dialed by hand.

A negative thing I have to say about the CT14 is that there is a higher level of background noise than I am accustomed to, which I suspect (but do not know for sure) is an inherent part of the DECT 6.0 technology which uses a single frequency band for both sides of the conversation, and uses time division duplex. So, digitally, a lot is going on behind the scenes, and I think I am hearing digital artifacts. This is mitigated somewhat because there is ample volume. So the volume can be turned down, which reduces the background noise, while still being able to hear the person on the other side. At some point I may compare to another DECT 6.0 telephone, or attempt to see what Plantronics has on this issue. (Update: I called Plantronics and a very pleasant rep assured me that the background noise I am hearing is not normal. The background should be quiet. He gave me an RMA number to send back the telephone for a replacement, but before I do that I am going to try the telephone someplace else. It is possible there is some sort of electrical interference unique to my house. Now that I finally have this telephone, I am very reluctant to part with it for any length of time. I really like it.)

Earlier complaints regarding the predecessor CT12 concerned interference with Wi-Fi networks, and it seems clear that is not a problem with the CT14. The CT14 operates on a different frequency band (1920-1930 MHz versus 2400-2500 MHz), and that is an advertised feature of the CT14.

Update December 4, 2011: After 2-1/2 years the CT14 remains my favorite telephone, although I am currently doing without it due to a second failure of the headset cord, and am waiting for a possible replacement from Panasonic. Thus the cord on the headset is definitely a weak link in this design where, with flexing eventually either the person at the other end can't hear you, or you can't hear the other person. This happens even though I am careful, and something I do not experience with my CS10 at the office, which is still going strong after perhaps 7 to 10 years, despite being a discontinued model, and despite being used much more than my CT14 at home. My point is that Panasonic evidently has taken shortcuts with the design of the headset cord for the CT14 compared to the CS10. The headset itself sounds very good, up until the time the cord fails. (At least one time I was able to get a replacement headset directly from Panasonic through a cumbersome process on their website for less than a "Spare M170 Headset CT14" from amazon.com; currently waiting to see price and availability now that my first replacement has failed, like the original.)

Regarding the background noise issue, that has never been resolved. The replacement telephone Plantronics sent had exactly the same problem, and my last letter to them (in June of 2009) has apparently been ignored. Until I am convinced otherwise, I will assume the background noise is a design issue, and something that a person just has to live with.

4A STEP BACKWARD FOR PLANTRONICS
By Nor'easter
The CT14 Plantronics Cordless Headset Phone is the new version of the Plantronics CT12 which I have happily used for the last six years. I expected that the CT14 would be an all around improved cordless headset phone with more features and even better sound quality than the CT12. The CT14 does indeed have more features but my experience with the new CT14 is that its predecessor- the CT12- was on the whole, a better headset phone with better sound quality. This was very surprising and disappointing for me.

Plantronics has made an excellent name for itself in the cordless headset phone market with innovative products and customer service/technical support which is second to none in my opinion. Unfortunately, the Plantronics CT14 disappointed me in the two most important areas- sound quality and the comfort of the headset.

Even though Plantronics CT14 uses a DECT 6.0 system which is supposed to block out audio interferences, I found the phone to have a constant, low level background noise with intermittent snaps and crackles. I would rate the CT14's sound quality as mediocre. By comparison, the older CT12 is has superior sound quality with interference present only when I was near a microwave that was on.

The headset supplied with the CT14 can be used in two ways- over the ear and over the head. I initially tried using the over the ear configuration. Quite frankly, I couldn't stand it. It hung off my ear in an extremely loose fashion with the microphone coming to rest under my chin and the headset just flopped around. I then switched configurations to "over the head" with an attached band which sits on top of the head- this is how I have used the CT12 for six years. Although the CT14 over the head configuration is very stable I was very disappointed to find that it is so tight that my ear begins to hurt after about thirty minutes. In comparison, I can use my old Plantronics CT12 over the head apparatus for many hours with no discomfort at all. Maybe the CT14's over the head headset needs breaking in and will loosen up with time, but I doubt this. No break in period was necessary for the CT12. I have taken the headset from my old CT12 and put it on the CT14. That solved the comfort issue but it doesn't speak very well for this product.

In conclusion, the CT14 seems to be a step backward from its predecessor, the CT12. However, for someone who has no experience with the previous model- the CT12- the CT14 would probably get a higher rating than I am giving it. Sound quality is very subjective and others may find the CT14's sound quality to be just fine. My problem is that I have a previous Plantronics cordless headset phone to compare the sound to, thus the criticism. ThePlantronics CT14 does have a much improved and wonderful variety of features and it is just so liberating to have a cordless handset phone. Since beginning use with the CT12 in 2003, I have often said to those with conventional phones that once you experience a hands free cordless telephone in your home, there is no going back to a regular phone where you have to use your hands (or worse yet, your shoulder) to hold the phone. I can talk on the CT14 while working with my computer and I can walk around my home with no restrictions while not straining my neck or hands. It is definitely an addictive experience. Also on a positive note, the CT14 has excellent battery life, a terrific manual, the telephone unit is small and very portable (you can slip it in your pocket or use the attached belt clip) and overall it is very easy to use. Even though I'm disappointed in some ways with the CT14, I would still purchase another Plantronics cordless headset phone in the future as I do believe Plantronics is the best brand on the market.

1Great disappointment after the CT12
By Erniesma
I got a CT12 (unless it was a CT10) back in 2000. I loved it: it saved my neck from the pain associated with tilting my neck to hold a phone between my shoulder and my ear. The sound quality was great. The phone worked whether docked in its charger or while roaming the house. The sound quality was exceptional. the only problem I ever had with it was that I dropped it all the time and finally, after years of abuse, I killed it. (In fact, I had two of these phones between 2000 and 2010, when I finally decided I couldn't squeeze anymore life out of the second one, also a victim of falls.) Compared to the older models, this CT14 is a terrible disappointment. I'm using it in the same location, yet now there is a constant irritating sound in the background. And it cannot be used while docked in the charger. May not sound like a big issue. But to answer these phones, one has to get the headset on, then press the talk button before the call goes to voicemail. With the old model, those were the only steps. With the CT14, there is a 3rd step -- pull the phone out of the charger, get the headset on, then press talk. It's not so easy to do that quickly, especially when the headset plug can pull out of the phone quite easily. Also, if you're using the phone and inadvertently put it back in the charger because you're using it while sitting at the desk where the charger is, the phone disconnects the call. If it does this because of some danger of the phone blowing up or giving me cancer while in use and in the charger, I'd be interested to know. Otherwise, it just seems like a design flaw. My rating of this phone is particularly low because I loved the older model so much. It was a revalation. This one is terrible by comparison. (If you never had the older version, this one might not frustrate you as much as it does me. But really, I am not okay with the terrible sound quality.)

5Great Value!!!
By Andrew Arnold
This is the first Bluetooth headset I've owned. It's a no name brand from China so I didn't expect much. The instructions included are fairly useless, but I really had no trouble with the set up. I'm no audiophile so I can't speak to the quality of the sound because I use it when I'm walking for audiobooks, plus I've got a little bit of a tin ear. But it sounds clean and clear to me- no interference at all. When I got it, I was on my way for a walk, so I figured I'd try it out right away- no charging first. It lasted through the whole half hour walk. When I got home I charged it, and within a half hour it completed the charge. (I don't know how long the charge will last, if need be I'll update the review). As the title suggests, it's a great value- you'll pay this much for a regular set of wired headphones (Which I hate like Wile E. Coyote hates the Road Runner). So I'm very happy with the purchase.

BATTERY CHARGE UPDATE- I use these headphones for about 30 minutes every day and the charge lasted about 2 weeks before it needed a recharge. When the battery is low, you'll begin hearing 4 quick beeps every 15 seconds and then after a few minutes, it will shut off. Also, I forgot to mention that I'm a 'big and tall' guy so the back of my neck looks like a package of hot dogs, and I would describe the fit of the headset as snug. It's not too tight but almost, so if you're not a Heavy Chevy like me, they will probably fit perfectly comfortably.

4First impression was disappointment, once I got it working, I am happy.
By msn yin yang
Received the headset and was eager to try it out. Looks sharp with the red and black styling. First fit was good for my small neck and ear buds sat comfortably in my ear. The red plastic covering the back of the neck was loose on one side. Tried to push it back but it did not stay. It wasn't a snap joi nt but it needed to be glued in place. No big deal. Will do that if I decide to keep it.

Unfortunately I will have to wait for some instructions before I can review the sound quality and pairing capabilities. I could not truth this unit on. There is one pin hole marked with on/off below it. Tried the usual paper clip method but can't feel any clicks and given the fragility of the product, I dare not pushed too hard. Waiting for others to comment on how to turn this unit on and off. If unable to do that, it is going back.

Update:
Vendor replied with options to return or replace it but I got it figured out and now testing the unit before final decision.

Do not stick anything into the pin hole. It is not a switch but the LED. What's mark as on/off is really the status led.

The instruction in the back of the packaging refers to a Bluetooth key, that's the play button or the center button. Hold that for about 5s to turn it on. This is also the talk and hang up button.

To pair, press the play button and hold it until it alternates between blue and red for paring, this can only be done from the off state.

To turn it off, Press the play button until you see it flash red. Let go of the play button.

To turn it on, press he play button until you see a blue light, let go of the button.

To answer or hang up, press the play button.

5An Incredible Headset for Landline / VOIP / Cell - Combined
By G. Hearn
The Savi 700 series comes (to my knowledge) in 4 different "configurations". The 710, 720, 730 and 740. Each "number" has a different headset. In my opinion. The 740 is, by far, the best option. I say that for two main reasons:

* The 740 comes with three different options for the headset: Over-the-ear, Over-the-head and Behind-the-head. So why purchase a different model which only has one headset configuration?
* With the 740 model, if your battery is running low, you can change-it-out (even during a conversation) with a fully-charged battery (see below for more information on this, as two additional purchases are required).

Now to the 740 itself. . . . . . I have been waiting for a new model for a few months now. I have been using a Plantronics model CS50 I think since they first came on the market. After so many years of use, the headset was falling apart, and it was being held together with tape and a rubber band (literally). I had heard about the 740, and wanted to give it a try. I've had it for a little over a month now. I think I'm one of the first people to receive one of these headsets when they were first shipping last month. (August 2011)

I really love this headset and unit. It's met my expectations. I should say that I use the VOIP (online phone - Skype is what I use) part and the "landline" part only. I don't have a "smartphone" with Bluetooth, but I have no doubt that it would work very well there also. But to use two-out-of-three was worth the investment for me.

Pros:
* I use the over-the-ear headset, and it's very light. There are three different ear pieces included, and I believe 4 different ear canal pieces. Three-out-of-four of the ear canal pieces are shaped so that they fit in your ear better. One is simply round. The earpiece also "toggles" back-and-forth for a better fit. FYI, when I first got my CS50, oh so many years ago, I remember that my ear had to get "used to" the headset being on my ear and it was a bit painful until my ear got accustomed to it. Not so with the 740. Perhaps that's because I have been using a headset for so long, though a different one, but this one is completely different and is more comfortable.
* The buttons on the headset work well. It has a much more "sturdy feel" than my last one. I will say that the piece that goes around my ear is a bit "flimsy", but so far I haven't had any problems with it.
* The voice quality is great. I must admit that I originally had it hooked-up to an "old" phone and had some buzzing, but I replaced the phone with a Cortelco 270000 from here on Amazon (see link below) and it works well. FYI, the Cortelco 270000 has a headset button and release, which is nice.
* The headset fits in the base well. That might sound "silly" but I always had "issues" with my CS50 not fitting all the time, and I would start work the following day and my headset would be "dead" because it had not charged the previous evening.
* Being able to swap the battery out, even during mid-conversation, is incredible. This is an "optional" (additional purchase) feature. (see more below FYI, an icon will appear on your computer letting you know when you're down to about 25% of the battery.
* I've read that the battery is supposed to work for 7-hours of talk time. I don't believe that is quite right, as I think it's less, but it is longer than my CS50.
* Of course, one of the main reasons to like this phone is that you can use it with internet phone (Skype and the like), a landline, and your Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. Once you get used to which button to press, it works really well and is easy to switch between them.

Cons:
* If you're looking at a picture of this headset unit, on the right side, where the headset is placed to charge, that almost 1.5" section is removable. That's because if you want to be able to swap-out batteries, then you have to have a different "deluxe charging kit" which is sold separately, and replaces this portion. I can certainly see having to purchase a separate battery, but I think the unit should have been made as one piece with the battery charger included. There is a little door on the side of the unit that pops-open to slide the extra battery in-and-out for charging And. . . the battery charger part does not come with a battery. You also have to purchase that separately as well.
* The phone cord to connect the unit to your phone is rather short. Granted, perhaps many people will have the unit close to their phone, but it would be nice to have a longer cord. I'm also assuming you could use a different cord if you like.

As you can see, the "cons" are really minimal. I would recommend that you do some research to find out more about this great new headset, and if it is really the one which will meet your needs. Plantronics offers some other new headset options, such as the CS500 Series which replaces the CS50 and CS55, which is a lot like the 740, but for a landline only. They also offer the Savi 440 series which is for VOIP only (Skype, etc. And they offer several Bluetooth headsets for cell phones. But the 700 series is the one which combines all three.

FYI, if you're not familiar with using Plantronics headsets with a landline, you cannot usually answer your phone from the headset. You have to purchase an optional handset lifter (model HL10 for the Savi series). Otherwise, you have to manually lift the handset, or have a phone, such as the Cortelco 270000, which has a headset button to press, as well as a release button. But only the handset lifter will allow you to answer the phone remotely, when you're away from your desk.

FYI, let me make one thing clear about the cell phone part of this headset. Even though I don't use that part (because I don't have a Bluetooth cell phone) I know how it works. Using this headset with your cell phone is for when you're sitting at your desk, or within the 350' vicinity of your desk. You cannot take this headset on the road with you to use with your cell phone. If you need to leave your desk to go somewhere, and you're on your cell phone, then you simply pick-up your cell phone and keep talking and place the Savi 740 headset into the charging cradle.

Before the CS50 model, I used corded Plantronics headsets for years, and I've always loved them. Plantronics makes the best headsets.

4Not great for Google Voice
By D. Matheny
This was one of those products that I was really excited to get - but it ended up being a bit of a let down. At this point, I'm probably going to send it back before I've had it too long.

My intention was to use the W740 for both Google Voice on the PC as well as for my cell phone. I don't really have a land line to hook it up to - so that feature didn't matter.

There are some really great things about this headset:

- I tried all the different fitting options and found the "over-the-head" option to be most comfortable for me. In fact, it is probably one of the most comfortable headsets I've worn.

- The base station is intuitive and easy to use. It's easy to see which device I'm connected to - as well as whether I'm on mute mode or not.

- The controls are also very easy to use. Volume, mute and call connect/disconnect functions are all quick & easy - unlike other headsets, which often require multi-second combinations to come out of mute...

- The DECT 6.0 range is amazing! My office is at home, and I can wander all over the house & yard with this headset. For me, that's not just a test case since I often have to run out to the shop when I'm talking to customers.

- It connects quickly to my cell phone. With my previous bluetooth headset (also from Plantronics) it blanks out for a couple of seconds whenever it switches to the headset - which can be irritating. This W740 switches almost instantly so I don't miss anything or have to hesitate and resume the conversation.

I hope it's obvious that this headset has a lot of potential - and will probably work great for a lot of people. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me because of these reasons:

- I use Google Voice as my business line and this headset doesn't play well with Google Voice at all. Whenever I get a call, I have to answer it on the headset and then click on the Google Voice app and answer there as well. Since there is no remote answer, I can't just answer a call when I'm in the shop - which is a total deal breaker. This headset does support remote answer with some of the VOIP providers - just not with the one I'm using...

- The microphone is over-sensitive to wind noise (including breathing). Honestly, the breathing can be overcome by just readjusting the mic; but, it's a bit harder to cover it up when I walk out to the shop since there is often a breeze outside. It also picks up ceiling fans and I end up with that faint "wind hiss" in the background.

- At the end of the day, the most important thing is that my customers can hear me and we can have a conversation without constantly repeating ourselves. I have found that I can hear them better than ever with this headset - but I've never had so many complaints from people who can't hear me.

Overall, I think I may just not be the correct target audience for this headset (although I wish I were). Between the lack of support for Google Voice and the poor handling of wind noise - it just doesn't work.

I did, however, give this product 4 stars since I think people who work primarily in an office & use either another VOIP provider or a standard phone will probably love it.

1Failed just after 1 year Warranty Expired
By bbell
I once had a lot of respect for plantronics after using my CS50 for many years, but the battery life deteriorated to the point it needed replacing. I opted for an upgrade to Plantronics Savi 740 Wireless Headset System for Unified Communication and was very happy with it. Fast forward 15 months. People started complaining they could barely hear me with their volume at max and the call quality continue to deteriorate until they were unable to make out what I was saying. After a quick diagnosis, I was able to determine the problem was with the savi W740 unit.

I placed a call to plantronics support who agreed the problem was with the Plantronics W740 (Case number:03374476). They got me off the phone and had me follow the Replacement Procedure on their website.

1.Go to https://www.plantronics.com/us/customer/account/login/
2.If you are new to this site,
a.Create an account by clicking the Create New Account button.
b.Complete the form.
c.Click Register.
d.Click whether you are a Consumer or Business User.
e.Skip to Step 4.
3. If you have already created an account, type your Email Address and Password in the boxes provided, and then click Go.
4.Register your product:
a.Search by product name or model number, and then click Go.
b.Enter your Purchase Date and Quantity, and then click Go.
c.Click Browse to find your proof of purchase (receipt), and then click Upload.
5.Submit your replacement claim:
a.Click the Replacement Service link.
b.Select the product you want to replace.
c.Click Request Replacement.

..... Finally at the end of all this, I was informed that the 1 year warranty expired 4 months ago and they would sell me a replacement for $201.00, but I would have to send back the old one. This is basicly $20 below the price of a new one and allows Plantronics to make the necessary repairs to the returned unit and resell it as refurbished. The spare headset battery is worth $20 alone. My Savi W740 headset lasted 16 months before failing compared to my CS50 which lasted 5 years and only needs the battery to be replaced.

My takeaway from this experience is that plantronics quality is dropping and they are trying to make a profit by forcing you to buy a replacement just below the price of a new unit. Then repairing their failed unit and reselling it as refurbushed.

Obviously, I am very disappointed with Plantronics and interested if anyone else has a similar experience?

5Super comfortable
By J. J. Marino
I have played with these headphones for a couple of weeks now. I use them on vent and TeamSpeak while playing various games. They are pretty comfortable, goes over the whole ear on my head and the mic sits at a good angle. I like some of the features of this mic such as:

Pros:
+ Looks cool with angular design
+ Mic folds up and stays away from your mouth when not engaged in voice chat.
+ Controls on the cord are intuitive and easy to use.
+ Good sound

Cons:
- Wearing these for an extended time does get a bit uncomfortable. For short stints its fine.

Overall I recommend this headset for all gamers.

Thanks for reading my review.

5The coverage!!
By Kat
These bad boys completely cover your ears, have head room for bigger heads, don't clamp down tightly and have awesome boom!
My fiance has a super deep voice and generally comes out as "Warble garble" on his headset, this headset picks him up clear as day and makes him sound awesome. The cord is fabric- which is totally amazing. Its unlike anything I've ever seen, and it's finally something my cats DON'T like to chew on, haha.

All in all, awesome gaming headset!

4Pretty decent kit from Logitech
By Y. W.
So I'm writing this review with about a week and a half of use, so this is more of a first impressions than anything. I've went through an alright number of headphones and decided to try a pair of these as it's the first time Logitech released a "gaming" headset at this price.

My regular setup is either an AKG K240 or Audio-Technica AD700 hooked up to a Creative X-Fi HD paired with a Blue Snowball, but the G230 isn't a bad purchase for someone looking for a less complicated setup, and can be driven by pretty much anything. Being a pair of stereo headsets, you're not going to get the surround sound functionality; if you still want it there's the G430 or the G35 from logitech as well as headsets from other manufacturers, or you'll be using some sort of sound card to do it for you (though simulated surround sound's effectively differ from person to person). The headset looks like a toned-down version of the G35 without the buttons on the side, opting to just go for regular in-line controls. Construction seems pretty average, with the headset giving off the feeling of almost snapping if you bend it too much (though that's the case with a lot of other stuff), and the hinges that the cups swivel on feels a bit cheap; overall, a relatively decent piece of kit that sits pretty light on your head. The headset sits pretty snug on my head (though it might be a little tight for some), and the pads are relatively cool (though my ears did get a little hot after a while, I live in Florida, after all) but stiff and slightly itchy after wearing them for long periods of time. On the plus side, you can take the padding out so you can clean them occasionally, as well as potentially replacing them with different pads altogether, which you may want to do if you find them uncomfortable.

On the topic of sound, the mic picks up my voice very clearly while talking at regular volume and posed no problems over Skype or Vent calls and all my friends heard my fine. The hearing end of the headset is pretty solid as well as vocals are easily distinguishable during calls. As for sound quality, the headset is pretty balanced and lends itself well to equalization. When listening to my music collection, I can't help but notice the bass has got a little bit of "oomph" compared to the rest of the frequencies and--though it doesn't overpower the mids nor highs--, it's definitely got a bit of an edge when listening to most tracks. Of course, that isn't say that the mids and highs are bad, far from it; instrumental music comes out very clearly with good instrument separation and (from what I can tell) pretty decent soundstage, and just generally very pleasant to listen to. In-game, I played some Battlefield 3 with the X-Fi HD processing simulated surround sound and it fares quite well. However, I must note that I occasionally hear popping during my listening sessions with this headset; whether I just got a defective unit, I don't know, but it's something to consider.

In summary, this is a very good sounding headset for the price, with the main thing I can fault it with is the popping issue and the hinges for the cups feeling slightly loose seeing as how easily they rotate. If that's not a deal-breaker for you, then this is a fine addition to your setup. I would rate it 3.5 stars if I could, as the popping is definitely not something I desire, but I suppose 4 is rather fine, too.

EDIT
May 2013: Sent my headsets back and the second pair doesn't have any popping, so it was just a bad unit, I suppose.

4As Good as I had Hoped
By N. Nolle
I purchased this product with the intention of pairing to my phone for running and working out. Wired headphones and earbuds have a tendency to not allow for free motion and sometimes get snagged on weights, benches, etc. I had several primary concerns for these headphones, and couldn't find the information I needed anywhere else, so I hope this review serves to answer some questions for you. Please note that this details my experience after 30 days of use.

Quality of Construction: These headphones feel decidedly cheap. I have a pair of wrap-around (wired) headphones that cost $10 that seems to have sturdier construction. Upon taking these out of the package, I felt like taking them off too roughly, or something falling on them, could damage or break the frame. After 30 days of use, they still feel cheap, but I am not so afraid that I will break them. While it is a very real possibility that a less careful person (read: spouse) or accident will break these, extending some consideration to fragile electronics makes me think that the frames breaking is not how these will end their life.

Quality of Sound: When running or working out, I am content if the headphones are 1) loud enough 2) not flat and 3) easily adjustable for conditions. These do well on all counts. I have noticed that some songs are too loud, some not loud enough -- but this is because of the source, not the headphones. There is good range of sound, sufficient bass and treble to please my ears while I exercise. Further, the positioning of the volume controls allows me to make adjustments without breaking stride -- the placement of the Play/Pause and the Forward and Back controls allows me to skip songs without skipping a step. (Please note: if your device does not support use of the Play/Pause, Forward and Back buttons, it is not the fault of these Headphones. I suggest you consult your phone or device's documentation if you are not sure whether it supports AVRCP)

Sweat Resistance: This is the big one, and the one that most reviews don't touch on. As I was searching for something I could wear while exercising, whether it would stand up to some sweat is extremely important. These have done well so far. I have noticed some sweat on the lower half of each ear-piece during workout but have not experienced any problems from this yet. I have worn them on intense interval workouts and long runs (10 mile) and they still function as well as new. I would caution that these do tend to keep the ears quite warm, and do seem to contribute to sweating -- I would not wear these in the summer, or in warm climates. Your experience may differ, as I live in a state with high humidity. (Special Note: After feeling sweat all over my head and worrying about these breaking, I spent a few dollars for an Under Armour beanie that keeps the sweat from rolling down my head. Definitely a good purchase, as it helps regulate my body temperature and significantly cuts down on the moisture that accumulates on the headphones)

Minor issues: The headphones sometimes skip or gap, depending on the location of the broadcasting device. This rarely happens and is not too irritating when it does. Call quality has been praised and I have never had anybody guess I was using speakerphone, headphones, in a well, etc. Battery life seems good, I can use them for approximately 5 or 6 hours without needing to recharge them. Recharging takes a touch less than 2 hours with the Micro-USB adapter.

Overall: I am quite satisfied with my purchase. These are not exactly what I thought I would need, but are definitely functioning as I hoped they would. For the price paid, I do not expect them to last forever, but anticipate that when they do stop working, I will quickly order a replacement pair of the same model. In my estimation, of you are searching for a pair of headphones that you can use while exercising, if you are worried about sweating, and if you are not extremely demanding of your electronics, I would strongly suggest these headphones. I rate them 4/5 because of concerns about the durability of the frame - even a slight concern is enough to withhold a perfect score - but would give them a 4.5 if possible.

5Exceeded my expectations. I love them.
By Mark Twomey
I bought these music headphones/phone headset directly from Motorola when they first came out, so I have been using them now for five months. I was waiting a long time for something like this and they have exceeded all my expectations.

You can download the quick start user guide from Motorola here:

[...]%20Phones%20Accessories/S305/US-EN/_Documents/Static%20Files/S305_QSG_EN_SP_68000201969A.pdf

Fit: 5 out of 5.

I wear glasses so fit was crucial for me, and they work perfectly fine while wearing them. I often wear them while riding my bike along the lakefront at Chicago, and they fit perfectly at the back of my head below the edge of my bike helmet.

Sound: 5 out of 5.

I continue to be amazed at the sound on these, deep rich bass and many subtle sounds.
Also they have lots of volume. I first set the volume at max on my cellphone, which is a free-on-contract Motorola EM330 music phone. At top volume these headphones are loud enough for me to hear them on Chicago's subway train (the EL). Some snobby audiophiles complain that these are not as good as their wired $200 headphones while listening in a totally silent room. Some people cannot be pleased! Also if you don't first max your volume on your cellphone you won't get the best quality sound.

Also since they are not in my ear canal, and not completely surrounding my ear to block out the sound, I find them to be quite safe since I can still hear the world around me while on my bicycle.

While on a call the person on the other end does not know I am using a blue tooth headset.
I hear the sound of the call in both ears and the microphone is high quality, and you have to search for the little elongated mic hole to point it out to people who ask about your headphones!

Features: 5 out of 5.

Your cellphone must have the correct bluetooth profiles for these to work fully: A2DP (Audio Profile), AVRCP (Remote Control Profile).
Many APPLE products DO NOT HAVE AVRCP and then their users INCORRECTLY COMPLAIN about the headphones missing the capabiliy of next track and previous track.

These headphones feature the following abilities:
* Take calls (press the telephone button at the top flat side to pickup).
* Make calls (press and hold the telephone button to call the last number dialled).
* Reject a call (press either the next track or previous track button)
* Mute/Unmute a call (press the Play/Pause button)

* Play music (press the play/pause button at the bottom flat side to play or pause)
* Pause music (press the play/pause button)
* Stop music (press and hold the play/pause button)

* Next track (press the next track button at the right flat side)
* Previous track (press the previous track button at the right flat side)
* You can also fast-forward or rewind by holding either the next track or previous track button.

* The volume controls are on the top edge along with the power button. The volume buttons have ridges you can feel with your finger, and when you increase the volume the headphones make a indicator sound increasing or reducing in volume/tone.

* Also depending on the capabilities of your phone you may be able to use these for voice control of your phone, by pressing and holding the make a call button.

Connection: 4.5 out of 5.

They receive the music through walls and even downstairs as I walk around in my condo listening to the music.
They actually do receive up to 33 feet away! So far away that I sometimes forget where I left my phone while I am listening to music on it!

When I am out walking and they are in my left side back pocket, I sometimes (but quite rarely) lose connection for a second, due I think to my body mass blocking the signal. I think the Bluetooth receiver is in the right side of the headphones, so if I move the phone to the front or right pocket, or even turn it over, the problem goes away. However, this rare problem may also be due to the phone not this headset.

Controls: 5 out of 5.

Having so many controls in such a small space is initially confusing, but you can soon the get hang of it and certainly is done by one hand. I do not stop my bike just to change tracks! I usually have no problems clicking the correct button with my right hand.

If I am slightly confused I can feel for lump where the headband is connected on the right, just beside this is the next-track button. Directly back from it is the back track, which I use to repeat a favorite song. Straight down is play/pause.

Usage Tips:
Set the volume of your music player to the maximum, and then control the volume using the headphones. In this way you get the best quality sound and the highest range of volume.

At the start of music day, I power up the headphones and they make a pleasing chirp sound in my ears.
Then I just press the PLAY button. The phone then communicates with the headphones making the two bluetooth connections (audio and remote control) while I hear a bleep each time. Then the music starts. At this point I lock the buttons on my phone to prevent it for switching tracks by accident in my pocket or bag.

When I am finished using them I turn them off completely, instead of leaving them on standby. Otherwise I might get a phone call that will ring in the headphones which are not on my head, so I miss the call.

When I power them off, I first stop the music, otherwise the music will suddenly start playing out of my phone speaker!

4Logitech "G430" A Critical Review.
By Andre Lawrence
Update: 11-20-13

A professional gamer wrote to clarify what the benefit of a headset that's not completely sealed. Here's his comment and my original review follows below.

CS wrote:

"Just wanted to comment that the foam padding that leaks sound is intentional. As someone who uses completely sealed headphones (Ultrasone 780) I can tell you, the last thing you want for gaming is an airtight seal on your ears. You wanna let them breathe if you're going to use the headset a long time. This makes it very comfortable over time and reduces fatigue."

*** original review ***

I'm not a professional gamer but I do like playing games occasionally. This headset is a very, very nice compliment to online gaming.

First, the set comes large, over-the-head, headphone. Large foam cups on the left and right can drop down or swivel to the side at your convenience.

The input jacks--one for the mic and one for the headphone speakers are connected to a usb interface.

Then you have to go to Logitect's site and download the drivers from their support section. We have Windows 8 Pro but the site gives you option going back to XP.

This is a dynamic 7.1 stereo headphone w/ speaker. But, you can adjust the volume, stereo/ surround and EQ settings in the app that's installed.

*** Testing ***

After having a couple of weeks, the padding doesn't feel as secure as when I first tried them on. I only wear them for up to 2 hours at a time, but my guess is, if you're one of these gamers that doesn't leave her/his chair for hours and hours then you may notice that the sound bleeds through the gaps between the beautiful, but relatively thin foam padding and your ears.

If you enjoy the occasional gaming experience, you probably won't notice the difference between this model and a more expensive model.

*** Pro's and Con's ***

+ Lightweight headphone that you hardly notice.
+ Microphone is very strong.
+ Multiple Sound/ EQ settings
+ Price--In the range for what it offers.
+ Buttons are large and easy to access

4 stars!

5Great sound
By Fishing Fool
First of all let me state that this headset does not have true discrete 7.1 surround sound hardware built-in. What I mean is it is the Dolby Headphone algorithm integrated into the software that simulates the surround sound experience when using stereo headphones. The headset is your average 2ch stereo headset with mic. It does not have multiple individual drivers in them like some of the very high-end surround sound headsets. The headset is analog but the package comes with a USB adapter which allows you to use a USB port instead of a mini headphone jack. The adapter is just a basic digital to analog converter.

With that said, the surround sound simulation sounds really good and the headphones do not hold back the sound quality at all. In fact the sound quality is quite good especially when using the customizable EQ to tailor the sound to your liking. One minor issue I've discovered is that the drivers in the headset are not powerful enough to produce the LFE channel without distortion at higher volume levels. On the other hand I did like the fact the settings for the headphones do not affect your speaker settings. For example your EQ settings only apply to the headphones which means when listening through your standalone surround sound receiver and speakers the headphone EQ is completely bypassed.

The headset itself is fairly basic...it's very lightweight which is good but it's mostly plastic so it feels cheap even though the build quality is very good. I'm not a fan of the color scheme myself, would've preferred all black ear cushions. The boom mic swivels up out of the way when you don't need it and the inline volume controller has a on/off switch for the mic. What's great is if you have a favorite pair of highend headphones/headset you could use it with the included adaptor and enjoy the same surround sound experience. Oh btw the software works in WindowsXP even though it's not listed in the description as an officially supported OS.

5Great headset
By Bill M
I bought this as the deal of the day, and it was a great decision. The headset works on both windows and mac through the usb adapter, which is nice, but you only get stereo sound on the mac os (not complaining, still a great headset). The logitech 7.1 software works quite well. you get good sound form the simulated 7.1 channels. The mic works great as well. The noise cancelling works like a charm, so no stray noises. One of the best headsets I own.

3Good Sound; short sighted design
By Robert J. Pankratz
This is a very specific review to help others figure out if this product will fill a specific need. I couldn't find this info when I was making my purchasing decision so I'm leaving this review to help others.

In my case I purchased these headphones specifically for use with a desktop computer to use with skype and general music listening. The idea was to use these for 8 hours a day to listen to music and take 10-30 phone calls that come in on skype a day. This has worked great forever with plantronics wired headsets but I would like to be free of the wires.

What the specs and the other reviews I have seen don't point out is a very important design element in this headset, this headset doesn't support Multipoint. Which means The 903+ is essentially two discrete products in one. First there is a Mono Headset that provides mono sound through both ear pieces and has dual microphones. Second there is an excellent Stereo Headphone that has no Microphone function.

These two modes are completely separate. At any given time only the Headset function or the Headphone function can be active but not both. Therefore there is no way to combine the microphone and the stereo audio function. This has two implications: (1) You can't pair the headset with a phone; and the headphones with a separate physical media player at the same time. (2) Any device you connect can only actively be using either the headphone or the headset but not both at the same time. A single physical device would have to switch modes on the fly to use both.

On a cellphone with the latest bluetooth profiles these two modes will work great; you can listen to music in full stereo and when a call comes in the headphones mode shuts down and the headset function fires up. You need the latest in cellphone but it does work nicely.

However if you want to use them with desktop computer, then you can in practice use them only in a single fixed mode. They are either going to be just bluetooth stereo headphones or a bluetooth headset. Desktop computers aren't expecting the dual mode device and will see the headset as two separate devices at the audio layer and there will be no indication to the computer that both can't be used at the same time. So the computer will try to access both simultaneously if you are playing music and try to take a phone call. The net result is conflicts and lockups.

Until desktop bluetooth functions catch up with cellphones; or plantronics adds multipoint to this family of head sets; you will need to look else where if you want a dual mode bluetooth headset/headphone for your desktop computer.

Also own a Backbeat 906. When I decided to buy a second headset, I chose this 903+ without second thoughts even though there wasn't any price discounts for this newly released product. The sound quality, when listening to stereo music, is excellent.

A new and neat feature is that, after you turn on this headset, a female voice announces/whispers to you the approximate operating time left so that you know when you may need to charge the headset. The 906 instead uses LED light pattern (blink 1, 2, or 3 times) to indicate approximate battery life.

update: the microphone volume seems to be too weak. you may want to get a traditional headset for making calls. The 906 doesn't have this problem (but picks up much more background noise than the 903+, which has great noise-cancelling feature).

3Good sound quality, cumbersome design
By Adam Wood
Giving it a rating of "It's OK" for me is due almost entirely to the ergonomics of the design. The performance is quite good.

For starters, the sound quality on these headphones is great. Music on these surprised and impressed me, and hearing people during phone calls is easy. The size, feel, and button use of these, though, are not something that I like. Below are some details.

Music (+)
- To me, music sounds full and engaging. I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of bass - as well as the quality of it. They sound good and not just boomy. Music performance is the biggest plus to this headset, IMO, and they do a good job with it.

Phone Calls (Neutral)
- On phone calls, people's voices come through clearly. I have no trouble at all hearing people on these.
- When I spoke through these, my brother indicated that I sounded just like my other bluetooth headsets. So, no better, but no worse.
- It was weird for me, though, talking with both ears plugged by these. The ear pieces fit in and partially block the ear canal. So, great for music, but it's like talking with your fingers partially covering your ears. I got used to and it's not a big complaint, but I prefer talking with my single-ear headset.

Ergonomics (-)
- IMO, the behind-the-ear portions are big and not comfortable to wear with glasses. Some of you won't be bothered by them, but I'm rating them lower because I don't find them very comfortable.
- The buttons aren't easy to use. Perhaps they will be with more practice, but I'm not sure. Pushing some of the buttons isn't very easy because pushing them puts force on the ear piece in a direction that tends to move it off my ear. I have trouble pushing them just sitting around, let alone when I'm moving. Also, the buttons have different functions depending on how many times you push them or how long you hold them. I feel older just typing this next part, but...I'll never remember all of them.

So, I commend the performance but don't like the ergonomics. If you have a chance to try these on at a store, I recommend that. If you like how they feel, these might just be the solution for you (provided that working the buttons isn't an issue for you).
