5An Incredible Headset for Landline / VOIP / Cell - Combined
By G. Hearn
The Savi 700 series comes (to my knowledge) in 4 different "configurations". The 710, 720, 730 and 740. Each "number" has a different headset. In my opinion. The 740 is, by far, the best option. I say that for two main reasons:

* The 740 comes with three different options for the headset: Over-the-ear, Over-the-head and Behind-the-head. So why purchase a different model which only has one headset configuration?
* With the 740 model, if your battery is running low, you can change-it-out (even during a conversation) with a fully-charged battery (see below for more information on this, as two additional purchases are required).

Now to the 740 itself. . . . . . I have been waiting for a new model for a few months now. I have been using a Plantronics model CS50 I think since they first came on the market. After so many years of use, the headset was falling apart, and it was being held together with tape and a rubber band (literally). I had heard about the 740, and wanted to give it a try. I've had it for a little over a month now. I think I'm one of the first people to receive one of these headsets when they were first shipping last month. (August 2011)

I really love this headset and unit. It's met my expectations. I should say that I use the VOIP (online phone - Skype is what I use) part and the "landline" part only. I don't have a "smartphone" with Bluetooth, but I have no doubt that it would work very well there also. But to use two-out-of-three was worth the investment for me.

Pros:
* I use the over-the-ear headset, and it's very light. There are three different ear pieces included, and I believe 4 different ear canal pieces. Three-out-of-four of the ear canal pieces are shaped so that they fit in your ear better. One is simply round. The earpiece also "toggles" back-and-forth for a better fit. FYI, when I first got my CS50, oh so many years ago, I remember that my ear had to get "used to" the headset being on my ear and it was a bit painful until my ear got accustomed to it. Not so with the 740. Perhaps that's because I have been using a headset for so long, though a different one, but this one is completely different and is more comfortable.
* The buttons on the headset work well. It has a much more "sturdy feel" than my last one. I will say that the piece that goes around my ear is a bit "flimsy", but so far I haven't had any problems with it.
* The voice quality is great. I must admit that I originally had it hooked-up to an "old" phone and had some buzzing, but I replaced the phone with a Cortelco 270000 from here on Amazon (see link below) and it works well. FYI, the Cortelco 270000 has a headset button and release, which is nice.
* The headset fits in the base well. That might sound "silly" but I always had "issues" with my CS50 not fitting all the time, and I would start work the following day and my headset would be "dead" because it had not charged the previous evening.
* Being able to swap the battery out, even during mid-conversation, is incredible. This is an "optional" (additional purchase) feature. (see more below FYI, an icon will appear on your computer letting you know when you're down to about 25% of the battery.
* I've read that the battery is supposed to work for 7-hours of talk time. I don't believe that is quite right, as I think it's less, but it is longer than my CS50.
* Of course, one of the main reasons to like this phone is that you can use it with internet phone (Skype and the like), a landline, and your Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. Once you get used to which button to press, it works really well and is easy to switch between them.

Cons:
* If you're looking at a picture of this headset unit, on the right side, where the headset is placed to charge, that almost 1.5" section is removable. That's because if you want to be able to swap-out batteries, then you have to have a different "deluxe charging kit" which is sold separately, and replaces this portion. I can certainly see having to purchase a separate battery, but I think the unit should have been made as one piece with the battery charger included. There is a little door on the side of the unit that pops-open to slide the extra battery in-and-out for charging And. . . the battery charger part does not come with a battery. You also have to purchase that separately as well.
* The phone cord to connect the unit to your phone is rather short. Granted, perhaps many people will have the unit close to their phone, but it would be nice to have a longer cord. I'm also assuming you could use a different cord if you like.

As you can see, the "cons" are really minimal. I would recommend that you do some research to find out more about this great new headset, and if it is really the one which will meet your needs. Plantronics offers some other new headset options, such as the CS500 Series which replaces the CS50 and CS55, which is a lot like the 740, but for a landline only. They also offer the Savi 440 series which is for VOIP only (Skype, etc. And they offer several Bluetooth headsets for cell phones. But the 700 series is the one which combines all three.

FYI, if you're not familiar with using Plantronics headsets with a landline, you cannot usually answer your phone from the headset. You have to purchase an optional handset lifter (model HL10 for the Savi series). Otherwise, you have to manually lift the handset, or have a phone, such as the Cortelco 270000, which has a headset button to press, as well as a release button. But only the handset lifter will allow you to answer the phone remotely, when you're away from your desk.

FYI, let me make one thing clear about the cell phone part of this headset. Even though I don't use that part (because I don't have a Bluetooth cell phone) I know how it works. Using this headset with your cell phone is for when you're sitting at your desk, or within the 350' vicinity of your desk. You cannot take this headset on the road with you to use with your cell phone. If you need to leave your desk to go somewhere, and you're on your cell phone, then you simply pick-up your cell phone and keep talking and place the Savi 740 headset into the charging cradle.

Before the CS50 model, I used corded Plantronics headsets for years, and I've always loved them. Plantronics makes the best headsets.

4Not great for Google Voice
By D. Matheny
This was one of those products that I was really excited to get - but it ended up being a bit of a let down. At this point, I'm probably going to send it back before I've had it too long.

My intention was to use the W740 for both Google Voice on the PC as well as for my cell phone. I don't really have a land line to hook it up to - so that feature didn't matter.

There are some really great things about this headset:

- I tried all the different fitting options and found the "over-the-head" option to be most comfortable for me. In fact, it is probably one of the most comfortable headsets I've worn.

- The base station is intuitive and easy to use. It's easy to see which device I'm connected to - as well as whether I'm on mute mode or not.

- The controls are also very easy to use. Volume, mute and call connect/disconnect functions are all quick & easy - unlike other headsets, which often require multi-second combinations to come out of mute...

- The DECT 6.0 range is amazing! My office is at home, and I can wander all over the house & yard with this headset. For me, that's not just a test case since I often have to run out to the shop when I'm talking to customers.

- It connects quickly to my cell phone. With my previous bluetooth headset (also from Plantronics) it blanks out for a couple of seconds whenever it switches to the headset - which can be irritating. This W740 switches almost instantly so I don't miss anything or have to hesitate and resume the conversation.

I hope it's obvious that this headset has a lot of potential - and will probably work great for a lot of people. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me because of these reasons:

- I use Google Voice as my business line and this headset doesn't play well with Google Voice at all. Whenever I get a call, I have to answer it on the headset and then click on the Google Voice app and answer there as well. Since there is no remote answer, I can't just answer a call when I'm in the shop - which is a total deal breaker. This headset does support remote answer with some of the VOIP providers - just not with the one I'm using...

- The microphone is over-sensitive to wind noise (including breathing). Honestly, the breathing can be overcome by just readjusting the mic; but, it's a bit harder to cover it up when I walk out to the shop since there is often a breeze outside. It also picks up ceiling fans and I end up with that faint "wind hiss" in the background.

- At the end of the day, the most important thing is that my customers can hear me and we can have a conversation without constantly repeating ourselves. I have found that I can hear them better than ever with this headset - but I've never had so many complaints from people who can't hear me.

Overall, I think I may just not be the correct target audience for this headset (although I wish I were). Between the lack of support for Google Voice and the poor handling of wind noise - it just doesn't work.

I did, however, give this product 4 stars since I think people who work primarily in an office & use either another VOIP provider or a standard phone will probably love it.

1Failed just after 1 year Warranty Expired
By bbell
I once had a lot of respect for plantronics after using my CS50 for many years, but the battery life deteriorated to the point it needed replacing. I opted for an upgrade to Plantronics Savi 740 Wireless Headset System for Unified Communication and was very happy with it. Fast forward 15 months. People started complaining they could barely hear me with their volume at max and the call quality continue to deteriorate until they were unable to make out what I was saying. After a quick diagnosis, I was able to determine the problem was with the savi W740 unit.

I placed a call to plantronics support who agreed the problem was with the Plantronics W740 (Case number:03374476). They got me off the phone and had me follow the Replacement Procedure on their website.

a.Click the Replacement Service link.
b.Select the product you want to replace.
c.Click Request Replacement.

..... Finally at the end of all this, I was informed that the 1 year warranty expired 4 months ago and they would sell me a replacement for $201.00, but I would have to send back the old one. This is basicly $20 below the price of a new one and allows Plantronics to make the necessary repairs to the returned unit and resell it as refurbished. The spare headset battery is worth $20 alone. My Savi W740 headset lasted 16 months before failing compared to my CS50 which lasted 5 years and only needs the battery to be replaced.

My takeaway from this experience is that plantronics quality is dropping and they are trying to make a profit by forcing you to buy a replacement just below the price of a new unit. Then repairing their failed unit and reselling it as refurbushed.

Obviously, I am very disappointed with Plantronics and interested if anyone else has a similar experience?
