A perfect case but they did not install the magnets for the Sleep/Wake function! Come on man, what were you thinking!

I have also purchased 4 of them for friends and family as gifts. This model is really the best one yet for protection and clarity of the screen for the iPad Air. There is only one major issue for me and that is the fact that Otterbox did not include the magnets in the snap on lid to put the iPad to sleep or to wake it up to conserve battery power.

I put together a video to show the benefits and features of this new case and basically it is nicely designed. I like the screen shield as it is clear and easy to see through and use. That has been my major complaint in the last two generations of iPad Defender cases and frankly I cut the screen shield out of the old cases as they made the retina screen look granulated and it diminished the quality of the screen image. This model has a clear shield and it really is very good when compared to the older versions.

The synthetic rubber outer layer is tight and the texture on it is very nice. It will not show scuffs and finger prints as easily as the one I have on my iPad 3.

I have to tell you that I am upset about the failure of Otterbox to put the two magnets into the snap on lid for the sleep/wake function. For me that is a major feature. I review a lot of products and I have already reviewed multiple cases with the magnets built in and even Bluetooth keyboard cases for the iPad Air with this feature. There simply is no excuse for having not included this feature that conserves iPad battery power. For me the case was just rushed to market to make shipments for the Christmas season as the expense of loyal customers that would have simply expected this feature as a standard built in part of the design. It is like buying a car and not getting brakes on the car. Just think, who would even think to ask if a car came with brakes or not or if an $89.95 case had a basic sleep/wake feature for an Apple iPad.

I rated this case as a four star item and it would have clearly been a 5 star review with this feature built in. Dear Otterbox, come on man, what were you thinking!

Extremely disappointed in this case.

I'm extremely disappointed in this case. I had an iPad 3 and an OtterBox Defender case to go with it and never had any issues with it at all. In fact it was - and still is - by far the best tablet protecting case I've been able to find.

Fast forward to just recently when I upgraded to the new iPad Air. I came here looking for an OttterBox Defender case and couldn't find one. Went to their website and couldn't find one there either. I ended up buying a temporary case from Amazon until I could find a Defender. Finally they became available here on Amazon. I purchased it, though I thought $89 was a little steep for a case, especially since I only spent around $50 or so for the last one. However, I felt at the time it was worth it as I'd become a fan of the Defender series.

I just received the case in the mail. Opened it up and immediately noticed the magnets that were in the lid to put the device to sleep when the lid is closed were not there. Doing a bit of researching, it seems OtterBox has decided to remove one of the main benefits of the case (the magnets for putting the device to sleep when the lid is closed) and jack the price up an extra $30 or so.

Completely unacceptable, in my opinion.

Come on, OtterBox. I've been a fan of your products for a while now. I've used them for my tablets as well as my phones, and I've talked friends, family members, and coworkers into purchasing them as well. I expected much, much more from you than this.

Having had an Otter Defender Case for my iPhone the ...

Having had an Otter Defender Case for my iPhone the past year, I anticipated purchasing the just released Defender Case for the iPad Air. It is a substantial case, shipped in several parts, with a minimalist instruction sheet packed inside. The positive points included the fit and finish of the product and the case's built in four-way stand (2 vertical and 2 horizontal options for respective portrait and landscape use). The case weighs 1 lb, 1 1/2 oz, a little more than the bare iPad Air (obviously, protection was the primary consideration in the design). With the plastic rear component (containing the stand), the case is one inch thick and ten and a quarter inches long. Negative points were the three broken fingernails during assembly and a scratched plastic screen protector (I will request a replacement from Otter). Had the assembly been less dramatic, and the plastic screen protector not been scratched, I would have given a higher score.

Dec.13...After contacting customer service re: the defective item, and forwarding two images of the case, I have been told I would receive a replacement as soon as they become available (backordered at this time). Upon receiving the new component, I will reevaluate my rating...dh

January...requested and received a replacement case from Otter. Replacement plastic screen protector was also scratched (quality control re: plastic screen protectors appears less than optimal ), but increased rating by one star in that Otter made a good faith effort to replace original case. Printed instruction sheet needs to be reviewed along with online video to reduce frustrations incurred while assembling.

Lots of positives, few negatives

Compared to the iPhone 4S version of this case this is a complete redesign. Part of that was required because of the new dimension, port locations and size of the iPhone 5, but other parts seem to be a genuine attempt at improvements.

Positives
--Feels very well protected.
--Newer rubber material is more plasticky than previous versions. Better feel, nicer fit and seems less likely to stretch over time. Also doesn't catch when going into the pocket.

Neutral
--Edge on the front glass is significant. This doesn't encumber my typing but I am aware of it. Of course, this is part of the protection of this case and is a fair trade-off in my opinion.
--General thickness. Definitely distracts from the beauty of an iPhone 5. This is not a flaw in the product, though, just a decisions making point for the consumer. That thickness is, once again, a trade-off for protection.

Negatives
--Power button has a ton of resistance while in this case. Not sure if this will break in with time or not.

Having said all of that I recommend this case whole-heartedly if you're looking for a good amount of protection and you're willing to trade some sleekness for it. For me it seems like a significant step up in materials and fit and finish quality over the previous versions.

Offers great protection!

I am not going to write a complete review, but I have to chime in on an 'issue' people are commenting on regarding this case.

No, this case is not sleek, it's a !@$*& otter box. If you bought this case, or are considering buying this case, it's because you want to protect your phone and prevent any damage from occurring. This phone is perfect for that purpose.

It may not still be as small as just the phone in your pocket, but who expects that when they buy an otter box? This case protects my phone great. It has a silicone insert which you put your phone into first, and then you put it into the hard, outer shell. This case even comes with a screen protector. Well worth the money in my opinion.

And on another note, the power button is not as hard to press as people make it sound, and I am sure it will get easier to press the longer you own the case.

The only thing I might say could be improved upon would be to put rubber on the bottom side of the case (perhaps a rubber bumper in each corner) to prevent it from sliding around. I have noticed when I toss the phone on my desk, it slides quite a bit. Perhaps my desk is just clean, but that's the only thing I could nit pick about this wonderful case.

Solid protection, moderately slim and lightweight

Bottom line: The Otterbox Commuter case is great protection for your iPhone 5 investment. And it's sleeker and lighter than the negative reviews might lead you to believe.

My highest priority was to protect this $400 gadget from damage. I also have preschoolers who are additional risks to anything fragile! Check.

At the same time, I wanted something with good design that would fit unobtrusively in my pants or shirt pocket. Check and check.

Also wanted materials that are durable. Time will tell, but my initial analysis indicates check.

FYI, I compared to the Otterbox Defender, which offers more protection, but is bulkier and more noticeable in my pocket. Also compared it to several different Speck cases, which appeared to offer similar protection at the same price, but did not come with a screen protector. Plus, the Otterbox color combinations, from black/white to lime green/navy, accommodate a range of tastes.

The criticisms in other reviews appear overblown. Regarding on/off switch stiffness, this isn't a factor at all. The case fits the phone perfectly. I didn't notice the "rough" edges on the bottom back because I don't hold it there.

In my four years of owning iPhones, iPads and cases, my experience is that no case is "perfect." If you want solid protection without too much bulk, this case is worth your consideration.

Outstanding protection with definite drawbacks - UPDATED

I recently switched to another case after over 7 months of hard use. Three reasons: 1) aesthetics, 2) the headphone jack, and 3)the screen protector. I've left my original review intact after the break.

Summary: While this case is no longer the best protection available for the iPhone 5, it's a great value as a solid no-frills case. This case is still compelling at its new price point despite how long its been on the market. See my original review below for more detail.

Additional Thoughts: The headphone jack issue and screen protector feel ultimately had me searching for a new case. Many of the newer cases, including some from Otter Box, are much more feature-rich and offer even better protection than this case at higher price points.

Updated Aesthetics: The utilitarian look and feel of the case turns out to have at least one major benefit: you can beat this case up without guilt. I had several major drops and bumps with this case. The result? Zero damage to the iPhone and negligible visible damage to the Otter Box rubber bumper. My newer case, while nicer to look at, doesn't tolerate wear and tear nearly as well.

Summary: If you're looking for the best protection for your iPhone 5 right now, this is the case you're looking for. The fit on the iPhone 5 is superb, and the peace of mind it will bring you is worth the cost of entry if protection is the utmost priority. The case makes some compromises to afford you that protection, which could be a dealbreaker if you're not totally onboard with a bulkier case. I'll detail those below.

Installation: Installation is a breeze if you've ever used an OtterBox case before (I hadn't). The best way to start is to open up the tab on the upper left corner by the volume controls, then pull the silicone bumper off the case with your fingertips. Things are easy from that point on.

Durability: Rock solid. I field tested this in NYC over the weekend, and the case acquitted itself very well. Wasn't at all worried about it, and minor bumps and the usual commuter jostling while trekking around the city were no match for this case. I haven't dropped it yet, but would be willing to bet the phone that it will survive the usual momentarily clumsiness onto city sidewalks.

Bulk/Aesthetics: These are the biggest--and related--points of contention. Much has been said about this, so I'll say this plainly: if you don't like the pictures of this case, nothing about seeing this in person will change your mind. From a usability standpoint, if you're a male wearing slim or skinny jeans, the front pocket is out of the question. Back pockets work surprisingly well, and retrieving the phone quickly is slower but still doable. If you're a female and wear skinny jeans, you'll need to carry this in your purse for sure. You'll also need to make room accordingly.

Feel: Somewhat subjective, but important enough to warrant mentioning. The screen protector that comes with the front panel of the hardshell interior doesn't quite sit flush the screen. As a result, the case takes off some of the "snappiness" of the UI. This is most noticeable when you lightly swipe the screen, since it sometimes doesn't register. Additionally, you can actually feel the screen depress slightly while working with the phone. This is less annoying than when I first noticed it, but it's still an issue I'm struggling with personally.

Headphone jack: The headphone jack is troubling, and this is where the bulk of the case works against it. Earbuds with square, 90 degree jacks (or even straight jacks that are bulkier than usual) will NOT fit on this case. The bulk of the case means that a 3.5mm that isn't straight and slim won't sit flush with the jack. This also applies for the auxiliary cables to connect to your car's entertainment system. (For reference, I'm using the Monster aux cables, which are slightly larger at the 3.5mm end.)

Lightning cover: I thought the cover for this was well done. The lightning connector sits well protected by a cover that integrates nicely with the case.

Recap/Bottom Line: This case is worth the 4 stars for the sheer amount of abuse it can withstand. The tradeoffs to usability and aesthetics are understandable, but noteworthy. If you've read this far and are still on the fence, you should probably weigh this case against a slimmer case with a separate screen protector.

Balanced review after testing it for a day with iPhone 5

I got my iPhone 5 today (through carrier sources) though it's yet to be activated and the first thing I did naturally was put the Otterbox Defender case on it. I had the Defender for my 3GS and it protected my phone all these years. Didn't have the iPhone 4/4S so I can't compare it to that. Quick impressions so far:

PROTECTION - Protection wise, the iPhone 5 Defender is at par with the 3GS. Industrial grade protection with complete coverage. Same concept and overall design, though the silicone feels slightly thicker and more solid in the 5. The silicone has a matte finish compared to the smooth finish in the 3GS, which hopefully should help avoid dust and lint - this was the only drawback with the 3GS case, it needed cleaning frequently.

BUTTONS/PORTS - Power and volume buttons are covered with silicone shaped like the buttons themselves. No problem pressing either of these buttons with the silicone. The headphone jack, charging port, and silent button have silicone plugs that can be pulled out to expose the jacks. (TIP - to open the plugs, insert nail and push the top silicone part higher to get behind the plug to pull it out. Hope this makes sense. The headphone plug is tiny and it can take some time getting used to opening it). The charging port plug, when opened, keeps snapping back into the case, which means it has to be held open with one hand to insert the charger. Insignificant issue, and I'm hoping that with use, this piece will loosen up a bit so that it stays open if needed. Opening at the back for the Apple logo is covered with a transparent plastic film. The front camera/speaker, the back camera/flash, and the two speakers at the bottom are left open and are the only exposed parts of the phone.

SCREEN COVERAGE - Clear plastic film on the screen integrated into the case, the touchscreen experience is as good with the film as it is without the case. The transparent film creates a tiny layer of air or moisture between itself and the screen, which can create watermarks on the screen. This was an issue with the 3GS as well. (TIP - I had read several forums for my 3GS that recommended applying baby powder before installing this case, but I personally didn't find that to be a lasting solution. Applying an Anti-Glare film to the phone's screen before installing the case was the best solution. I am still waiting for my Anti-Glare film to come in, but I installed a spare I had for my 3GS just to see if that solved the issue with the 5, and it did).

HOLSTER - The silicone is kept intact with two plastic tabs on the side. This really helps keep the silicone in shape and prevents it from stretching or loosening over time. These tabs also work as the locking mechanism for the holster. The case can be inserted facing in or out in the holster, a fine improvement by Otterbox. Most such holsters I have seen only allow face-in orientation (3GS allowed only face-in which I found annoying when going for a run). This holster has a fully rotating belt clip so that it can be attached vertically or horizontally on the belt. No chance of the case falling out, nice secure fit. The holster is much better and ergonomically designed than the 3GS version. It is easier to access the phone with this design.

Here are a few details that I would have liked to see improved/addressed:

- Front and back camera openings - the two openings are huge! The front camera/speaker/light sensor opening is one big opening. For the 3GS version (3GS only has speaker on the front, no camera) and from what I have seen for the 4S, the cases had a precision opening which provided better overall coverage. For the back, the opening is approximately 30-40% bigger than it should be for the camera and flash. It would have been nice to have more precise openings on both places for even better protection.

- Headphone jack plug - this perhaps has more to do with the placement of the headphone jack itself, but the case opening is really small and it's not very smooth to open the silicone plug. For the 3GS, the silicone plug went around the headphone jack to the back, which made opening it a breeze. They could have used the same design for the 5 as well. With the current design, it takes time opening the headphone plug. It's entirely possible it is just something that takes getting used to, or that the silicone will loosen over time making it easier to open.

- The iPhone 5 is a super sleek, light, and slick looking device. Putting the Defender case makes it bulky (more than doubles the thickness). Now this is a pro in that it offers super-protection which I cannot live without. The downside is that it takes away the aesthetic beauty of the iPhone.

I bought this in black when that was the only color available. Now it seems there are a lot more choices. Wish I had waited for the Glacier (just a personal preference)!

Other than these minor issues, I am overall very happy with this case and I hope to use it for several years to come, just I did with my 3GS Defender. Yes, it's slightly expensive, but it's also peace of mind.

UPDATE 10-12-12

The watermark issue seems to be persistent with this case and nothing seems to permanently help in this regard. The anti-glare film bridges the gap somewhat but only for a few days. The screen in the case lifts right back up after a few days and creates the watermark issue all over again making it difficult to use the screen. I am sending this back to get a different case. Yes, I want to protect my iPhone which is why I was willing to put up with the bulk of this case, but I can't give up functionality.

An Otterbox is an Otterbox

I have owned and used an Otterbox case for my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 and now, finally, for my iPhone 5.

These cases are great and offer a lot of protection. With that being said, you have to anticipate this case making your phone a little bit bulkier. I personally tend to love the added "bulk" that this case adds to my phone because I have very large hands and long fingers. This case gives my phone the extra bulk needed to allow me to grip it and text without letting my hands get fatigued or painful.

As with all of their other products, this case is extremely well-made and fits the phone perfectly. If you've never owned an Otterbox before then perhaps you should check out some pictures before deciding if this case is right for you. If you've ever owned an Otterbox... Then you know exactly how great these things are.

Here's a funny side story:

I once left my iPhone 4 (inside of its Otterbox, of course) on the of the roof of my car after the gym and drove away. While going 50 m.p.h I heard a huge "thud" on the side of my door and had no clue as to what it was. Long story short, I realized that my phone had basically fallen off of the roof, slammed into my door and hit the pavement and was completely fine. The case and the phone didn't even have a dent.

Great for the essentials!

I took a chance on this case- I had an Otterbox Defender for my iPhone 5 which I loved but I was intrigued by the idea of not having to carry a wallet for the essentials (driver license, credit card, debit card, and some Cash).

I can fit 3 cards in this case plus two folded bills of Cash. My "go to" card is always on top (it's the easiest to get out) and the case does exactly what I want it to do- carries the essentials so I grab my phone and go. It also protects my phone (it's the Commuter series, so it's not quite as rugged as the Defender but overall it's about the same size which isn't bad at all).

The cards inside are very secure and the case is designed so it's impossible for your stuff to fall out. My one complaint was that the screen protector it came with had stickers on it that didn't peel off cleanly and made it pretty much worthless so I don't use it- but I'm so satisfied with the case that it doesn't affect me giving it 5 stars.

More Trouble Than It Should Be

I like the idea of a wallet case for my iPhone and doing away with my wallet. The fewer things to carry, the better. But wallet cases are very limited. The idea is that they are cases for occasional use, such as when you are going out for the night and only want to carry an ID and credit card. This wallet case can only carry three cards or two cards and three folded bills.

Otterbox Commuter cases are two piece cases that have a silicone layer covered by a hard shell. They aren’t my favorite because the hardshell doesn’t quite fit right leaving tiny gaps. Two piece cases take more effort to get on and off which is more of a problem on a case made for occasional use. The black on black color scheme turns the handsome iPhone into an all-black design-free box.

Otter likes to put rubber plugs over the jack openings which offers extra protection, but is a pain when you want to charge or plug in headphones. The volume button covers work well, but the on/standby button cover make it stiff and lacking in tactile feel. Otter provides a clear screen protector and applicator card.

Cards fit in the wallet case by sliding down the back panel revealing the compartment. The slide is stiff and there is no grip for your finger to press against. You have to press against smooth sloping plastic. When you get the slide open, you have to dig you finger nail under the top card so you can pry it up and out.

This wallet case is too much trouble for me. But if it fits your needs, this case should offer good protection and durability. Two and a half stars.

The geek equivalent of the double-edged sword

This is another well made case from Otterbox. I've had Otterbox cases for my iPhones and iPads and they've always performed well. They aren't stylish, but they protect your device. I've used them for travel mostly, and have never been disappointed.

This "Wallet Case" checks all the usual Otterbox, um, boxes: Protective? Check. Grippy? Check. 80's Volvo-like Styling? Check. Yep, it's an Otterbox all right.

But one with a twist. Because this case resolves that nagging dilemma we all have: how do I carry my iPhone AND my credit and ID cards in one place?

Dilemma resolved. This case is that place.

Otterbox added a sliding tray on the back of one of their tough cases. From the front and back and the added "bump" isn't noticeable. In profile however or in the palm of your hand it's there alright. Think of the top of a 747 and you'll get the idea. A little curvature on an otherwise continuous line.

In that bump of a tray you can fit a pair of credit cards and your driver's license. Great for the minimalist traveler or a night out clubbing. That is if you go to hipster clubs where geeky dual-purpose cases are cool.

I don't go to clubs like that. I don't go to clubs. But if I did, this is the case I would take.

Go ahead and drop it while dancing crazily to the DJ's Devo dub: both your iPhone and credit cards will be just fine.

Just don't lose it. Then you'll never be able to call that girl in the Warby Parker frames who put her number into your phone. Plus you'll have no way to pay for the cab ride home. Double bummer, dude.

So there you go. The "OtterBox Commuter Series Wallet Case for iPhone 5 & 5S"--the geek equivalent of the double-edged sword.

Update 6/11/13 (Price drop) GREAT protection, easy to use, slightly uncomfortable clip

Update 6/11/13: Just an FYI folks, this is currently at 34.82 and free shipping! This is a no brainer, and a steal. None of the stores around me are giving any kind of discount....if they have it.

I still love this case, but I did want to let you know that if you rely on the vibration to notify you, you might miss some calls. This does soften the vibration quite a bit. If you are holding it, it's not a problem, but sometimes, when it is on my belt with a shirt tucked in, and I am walking, I do not feel the vibration. There is no problem if I am still. I also think that this is in part due to the phone. The vibrate strength, even on full, is not as strong as my old phone, so the extra cushion from the case just softens it up even more....but you know what, this weekend I have seen three people with this phone and Belkin cases and they all had cracked glass!

After getting a Belkin case for my S4, it took me only an hour to go out and buy the Otterbox 77-27434 Defender Series and Holster Case for Samsung Galaxy S 4 - 1 Pack - Retail Packaging - Black. The difference is night and day and while this is more than twice the price of the Belkin it is totally worth it! Plus, you don't need to spend money on a screen protector, so it really isn't that much more.

The Defender is really a three piece, full coverage, case. It provides full coverage for your S4, corners, back, front, screen and it has flip covers for the charger connection, etc., and those flips flip up easily, even without fingernails. The case itself provides excellent grip all around without being intrusive. It is a little difficult pressing the buttons on the face, but my fingers are a little big. One of my FAVORITE things is the screen protector....NO bubbles! Yup, you heard me right, no bubbles. That's because you don't actually have to "apply" the protector to the screen. This is awesome. If you look at every screen protector I have reviewed for my iPhones and iPads, they all had bubbles....I have come to hate bubbles, and thought I would have to learn to live with them. I am here to tell you, I am now bubble free (and so is my wife)!!!

When pressing the side buttons you do have to press a little hard, but for the protection you get, it's fine. Also, the openings for the camera are angled so that the thick case does not appear in the pictures. The case itself is micro-textured to provide good grip without feeling rough.

There is NO interference at all with using the IR when reading and scrolling down by nodding my head or turning a page with a wave of my hand. Sharing pictures and video work equally as well with no perceptible interference. The only real issue is that I did notice a slight difference in wi-fi reception in our house with the case on. It is slightly weaker, but nothing big, and after one day I don't even think about it. The entire screen isvisible and nothing is blocked.

The only thing that I would knock half a star for is the clip is uncomfortable and digs into my skin when it's on my belt, and is especially bad when my shirt is not tucked in. They could have made this better, and I wonder ifI will come and downgrade this to 4 stars later because of this. For now, I will say 4.5 stars with an easy round-up to 5.

Instructions when installing your phone:
CAREFULLY remove the rubber gasket, using your fingernails. There are little spaces along the sides. You need to use these to seperate it or you risk breaking it. Once that is done, the rest is easy. Try not to touch the inner portion of the screen as it comes perfectly clean (at least it did on both of ours). Putting everything together after this pointis easy and takes less than 30 seconds. Gently click everything together and you are ready to go.

We both love this case and I highly recommend it.

Solid, seamless protection, exactly what you'd expect from OtterBox...

I bought an OtterBox case for my previous Galaxy device and loved it, so when I upgraded to the S4, buying a case was an easy choice. The Defender Series provides very, very solid protection for your phone with as little added bulk as possible.

PROS:
--Case fits with the S4 as tight and seamlessly as possible.
--Two piece hard case plus rubberized exterior pull-over provide protection that is the best I've found available.
--Easy to assemble and take apart when you do need to get the phone out.
--Proper openings for camera, flash and speaker on the back, for sensors and speaker in front.
--Pull out tabs for headphone and mini-USB jacks. Keeps dust out. These tabs are now reinforced with plastic, an upgrade from my last Defender case for the Galaxy which had standard rubber tabs.
--Sleek, black design goes very well with the black S4.
--Bottom of case does not interfere with home key or softtouch keys at the bottom of the phone (this was a problem w/ my old one).
--Raised lip on the case surrounds the screen, providing perfect protection from scratcing.
--Comes with a built in screen protector (some will like this, I did not, see below).

CONS (Not much here really):
--Raised rubber areas where you press down the power button and volume rocker require a heavy press for the buttons to function. This was not the case on my old Otterbox, which only required a natural press of the botton/rocker. This may be a problem that goes away with more use, but this was the first problem I noticed, having to really mash the button down to get it to work.
--Was not a fan of the built in screen protector, I didn't figure I would be when I made the purchase though. In fact I removed it after only a few hours of use. It didn't noticeably affect the touch screen, visual impact was minimal. The screen had a couple minor flaws (couldn't tell if it was scratched or what). I'm OCD about things like that so it wasn't going to work for me. If you want a case without a built in cover, you should probably know that the protector is glued into the plastic casing. It isn't something you can slide right out. This isn't to say it is difficult to get out. It is glued down, but you can easily lift up a corner and remove the screen. The glue will pull off easily in one piece as well. It really isn't a big deal, but it might be a good idea for OtterBox to consider a slide-out screen protector or something like that for those who either don't like the one that comes with it or don't want to use them at all (I am the latter, the raised lip on the OtterBox keeps the screen protected very well for me, I had my last Galaxy in one of these for 2 years and traded it in without a single scratch, no screen protector, the screens on this series of phones has been very durable in my experience).

BOTTOM LINE:

If you have an S4 and want maximum protection for your device, this is the way to go in my opinion. It protects the phone with less added bulk than one would guess or surmise from the photos. The case fits snugly and blends well with the phone. Minor drawbacks with the power and rocker buttons, and the screen protector wasn't personally for me, but overall these are negligible issues, it's a great case!

Looks Like It Will Protect My New S4

I dropped my iPhone 4G for the first time while on vacation two weeks ago. Even though it was in a fairly padded flip case, it hit just right on the granite floor and cracked the front glass of the iPhone. Replacing the glass would have been as expensive as upgrading to a similar phone or half the cost of getting the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S4. I chose the Galaxy S4.

I did not buy this Otterbox case at Amazon although I would have saved some money. I spent the extra to immediately protect my new S4 when I purchased it at my local AT&T store. I got the Raspberry case because it would be hard to lose in my purse.

So far I am exceptionally pleased with this case. It does not add much weight to the phone (which is quite a bit larger than the iPhone) and it fits well in my (female) hand. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for excellent protection for their S4.

Cute covers are fun but protection is critical as I found out when I dropped my iPhone. In a case like this I know it would have survived the fall.

UPDATE: Two months later and I am very happy that I bought this case. I'd have liked to save a few dollars by buying it on Amazon but waiting a couple days to receive it didn't seem a good option after dropping my iPhone.

I just finished installing a microSDHC card into my phone which meant removing the Otterbox case for the first time. It was simple to remove and to replace once the card was installed.

I admit I had several cases for my iPhone, some better protection than others. This is the only case I have for my s4. If I get another case it will be the same case in a different color.

Outstanding protection with definite drawbacks - UPDATED

I recently switched to another case after over 7 months of hard use. Three reasons: 1) aesthetics, 2) the headphone jack, and 3)the screen protector. I've left my original review intact after the break.

Summary: While this case is no longer the best protection available for the iPhone 5, it's a great value as a solid no-frills case. This case is still compelling at its new price point despite how long its been on the market. See my original review below for more detail.

Additional Thoughts: The headphone jack issue and screen protector feel ultimately had me searching for a new case. Many of the newer cases, including some from Otter Box, are much more feature-rich and offer even better protection than this case at higher price points.

Updated Aesthetics: The utilitarian look and feel of the case turns out to have at least one major benefit: you can beat this case up without guilt. I had several major drops and bumps with this case. The result? Zero damage to the iPhone and negligible visible damage to the Otter Box rubber bumper. My newer case, while nicer to look at, doesn't tolerate wear and tear nearly as well.

Summary: If you're looking for the best protection for your iPhone 5 right now, this is the case you're looking for. The fit on the iPhone 5 is superb, and the peace of mind it will bring you is worth the cost of entry if protection is the utmost priority. The case makes some compromises to afford you that protection, which could be a dealbreaker if you're not totally onboard with a bulkier case. I'll detail those below.

Installation: Installation is a breeze if you've ever used an OtterBox case before (I hadn't). The best way to start is to open up the tab on the upper left corner by the volume controls, then pull the silicone bumper off the case with your fingertips. Things are easy from that point on.

Durability: Rock solid. I field tested this in NYC over the weekend, and the case acquitted itself very well. Wasn't at all worried about it, and minor bumps and the usual commuter jostling while trekking around the city were no match for this case. I haven't dropped it yet, but would be willing to bet the phone that it will survive the usual momentarily clumsiness onto city sidewalks.

Bulk/Aesthetics: These are the biggest--and related--points of contention. Much has been said about this, so I'll say this plainly: if you don't like the pictures of this case, nothing about seeing this in person will change your mind. From a usability standpoint, if you're a male wearing slim or skinny jeans, the front pocket is out of the question. Back pockets work surprisingly well, and retrieving the phone quickly is slower but still doable. If you're a female and wear skinny jeans, you'll need to carry this in your purse for sure. You'll also need to make room accordingly.

Feel: Somewhat subjective, but important enough to warrant mentioning. The screen protector that comes with the front panel of the hardshell interior doesn't quite sit flush the screen. As a result, the case takes off some of the "snappiness" of the UI. This is most noticeable when you lightly swipe the screen, since it sometimes doesn't register. Additionally, you can actually feel the screen depress slightly while working with the phone. This is less annoying than when I first noticed it, but it's still an issue I'm struggling with personally.

Headphone jack: The headphone jack is troubling, and this is where the bulk of the case works against it. Earbuds with square, 90 degree jacks (or even straight jacks that are bulkier than usual) will NOT fit on this case. The bulk of the case means that a 3.5mm that isn't straight and slim won't sit flush with the jack. This also applies for the auxiliary cables to connect to your car's entertainment system. (For reference, I'm using the Monster aux cables, which are slightly larger at the 3.5mm end.)

Lightning cover: I thought the cover for this was well done. The lightning connector sits well protected by a cover that integrates nicely with the case.

Recap/Bottom Line: This case is worth the 4 stars for the sheer amount of abuse it can withstand. The tradeoffs to usability and aesthetics are understandable, but noteworthy. If you've read this far and are still on the fence, you should probably weigh this case against a slimmer case with a separate screen protector.

Balanced review after testing it for a day with iPhone 5

I got my iPhone 5 today (through carrier sources) though it's yet to be activated and the first thing I did naturally was put the Otterbox Defender case on it. I had the Defender for my 3GS and it protected my phone all these years. Didn't have the iPhone 4/4S so I can't compare it to that. Quick impressions so far:

PROTECTION - Protection wise, the iPhone 5 Defender is at par with the 3GS. Industrial grade protection with complete coverage. Same concept and overall design, though the silicone feels slightly thicker and more solid in the 5. The silicone has a matte finish compared to the smooth finish in the 3GS, which hopefully should help avoid dust and lint - this was the only drawback with the 3GS case, it needed cleaning frequently.

BUTTONS/PORTS - Power and volume buttons are covered with silicone shaped like the buttons themselves. No problem pressing either of these buttons with the silicone. The headphone jack, charging port, and silent button have silicone plugs that can be pulled out to expose the jacks. (TIP - to open the plugs, insert nail and push the top silicone part higher to get behind the plug to pull it out. Hope this makes sense. The headphone plug is tiny and it can take some time getting used to opening it). The charging port plug, when opened, keeps snapping back into the case, which means it has to be held open with one hand to insert the charger. Insignificant issue, and I'm hoping that with use, this piece will loosen up a bit so that it stays open if needed. Opening at the back for the Apple logo is covered with a transparent plastic film. The front camera/speaker, the back camera/flash, and the two speakers at the bottom are left open and are the only exposed parts of the phone.

SCREEN COVERAGE - Clear plastic film on the screen integrated into the case, the touchscreen experience is as good with the film as it is without the case. The transparent film creates a tiny layer of air or moisture between itself and the screen, which can create watermarks on the screen. This was an issue with the 3GS as well. (TIP - I had read several forums for my 3GS that recommended applying baby powder before installing this case, but I personally didn't find that to be a lasting solution. Applying an Anti-Glare film to the phone's screen before installing the case was the best solution. I am still waiting for my Anti-Glare film to come in, but I installed a spare I had for my 3GS just to see if that solved the issue with the 5, and it did).

HOLSTER - The silicone is kept intact with two plastic tabs on the side. This really helps keep the silicone in shape and prevents it from stretching or loosening over time. These tabs also work as the locking mechanism for the holster. The case can be inserted facing in or out in the holster, a fine improvement by Otterbox. Most such holsters I have seen only allow face-in orientation (3GS allowed only face-in which I found annoying when going for a run). This holster has a fully rotating belt clip so that it can be attached vertically or horizontally on the belt. No chance of the case falling out, nice secure fit. The holster is much better and ergonomically designed than the 3GS version. It is easier to access the phone with this design.

Here are a few details that I would have liked to see improved/addressed:

- Front and back camera openings - the two openings are huge! The front camera/speaker/light sensor opening is one big opening. For the 3GS version (3GS only has speaker on the front, no camera) and from what I have seen for the 4S, the cases had a precision opening which provided better overall coverage. For the back, the opening is approximately 30-40% bigger than it should be for the camera and flash. It would have been nice to have more precise openings on both places for even better protection.

- Headphone jack plug - this perhaps has more to do with the placement of the headphone jack itself, but the case opening is really small and it's not very smooth to open the silicone plug. For the 3GS, the silicone plug went around the headphone jack to the back, which made opening it a breeze. They could have used the same design for the 5 as well. With the current design, it takes time opening the headphone plug. It's entirely possible it is just something that takes getting used to, or that the silicone will loosen over time making it easier to open.

- The iPhone 5 is a super sleek, light, and slick looking device. Putting the Defender case makes it bulky (more than doubles the thickness). Now this is a pro in that it offers super-protection which I cannot live without. The downside is that it takes away the aesthetic beauty of the iPhone.

I bought this in black when that was the only color available. Now it seems there are a lot more choices. Wish I had waited for the Glacier (just a personal preference)!

Other than these minor issues, I am overall very happy with this case and I hope to use it for several years to come, just I did with my 3GS Defender. Yes, it's slightly expensive, but it's also peace of mind.

UPDATE 10-12-12

The watermark issue seems to be persistent with this case and nothing seems to permanently help in this regard. The anti-glare film bridges the gap somewhat but only for a few days. The screen in the case lifts right back up after a few days and creates the watermark issue all over again making it difficult to use the screen. I am sending this back to get a different case. Yes, I want to protect my iPhone which is why I was willing to put up with the bulk of this case, but I can't give up functionality.

An Otterbox is an Otterbox

I have owned and used an Otterbox case for my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 and now, finally, for my iPhone 5.

These cases are great and offer a lot of protection. With that being said, you have to anticipate this case making your phone a little bit bulkier. I personally tend to love the added "bulk" that this case adds to my phone because I have very large hands and long fingers. This case gives my phone the extra bulk needed to allow me to grip it and text without letting my hands get fatigued or painful.

As with all of their other products, this case is extremely well-made and fits the phone perfectly. If you've never owned an Otterbox before then perhaps you should check out some pictures before deciding if this case is right for you. If you've ever owned an Otterbox... Then you know exactly how great these things are.

Here's a funny side story:

I once left my iPhone 4 (inside of its Otterbox, of course) on the of the roof of my car after the gym and drove away. While going 50 m.p.h I heard a huge "thud" on the side of my door and had no clue as to what it was. Long story short, I realized that my phone had basically fallen off of the roof, slammed into my door and hit the pavement and was completely fine. The case and the phone didn't even have a dent.

Still an otterbox, but lacking slightly

This will be my third otterbox, all used on Iphones. I originally had one for my 3G, then my 4S and now my 5C. On this latest one it seems as if they have skimped out on the thickness of the inner plastic housing. It just doesn't feel as substantial as prior models. Once the rubber outer skin is on you do not notice it, but it was a bit disconcerting when I immediately opened the package.

On the 5c model I feel they got lazy when designing it. Unlike prior models where the home button was surrounded and covered by the plastic/rubber skin, it is totally open on this model. It is clear that otterbox did not design the front screen protector with the 5c in mind. The screen protector just has an open round hole for the home button, for which I assume is supposed to allow those who have the 5S to be able to still use their fingerprint scanner, except this phone doesn't have that feature! So now there are open spots where dust/dirt/grime can enter and collect UNDER the screen protector. The same goes for the top light sensor/call speaker, it is no longer encased or molded into the plastic skeleton, instead just an open hole cut into the screen protector.

I am severely disappointed in the production of case... I am still debating whether I keep it or not. I purchase Otterbox's because of their reputation of quality and engineering that goes into their cases, or at least used to. I find that this is should be NO WHERE near $50 and I could have spent FAR LESS and achieved a very close result with a no-name branded case.

Poor Screen Protector Fit

I am new to Otterbox, but plenty people I know have them for their iPhone 4 and were very pleased with the product. So when I got an iPhone 5C, I ordered the Otterbox. I installed it not really knowing how the product was supposed to work or feel and as I have never had a smartphone I wondered why it was so difficult to use the touchscreen. I finally realized that the clear screen protector bowed when installed and is therefore not tight and flush with the screen. I tried a co-worker's Otterbox with iPhone 4 and there is no such play with the screen protector. I reordered the product which came today and it has the same problem. Something is not right with this new product and I would wait to order it until Otterbox works on this issue.

The bad reviews were right...

I have an Otterbox Defender on my Galaxy S4 and I love it. Everyone I know who has any sort of smart phone loves their Otterbox case for it. Well I guess things have changed. I guess the bean counters at Otterbox decided to squeeze a few more pennies out of this one. The result is a total failure. This case is pathetic, especially at the prices the Otterbox cases go for. My wife got the iphone 5c and we couldn't wait to put an otterbox case on it. We were waiting for otterbox to come out with the color models but that didn't look like it was going to happen any time soon, so we ordered this black one from amazon. There were a few bad reviews when I ordered but I decided to take a chance anyway. Big mistake. I should have listened to the initial bad reviews because this case is pathetic. The plastic is much thinner than any other otterbox I've ever seen. But we might could have lived with that. The biggest problem is the screen protector. It's so far off the screen you have to press it down with force to get your touch to register. It's so noticeable that we both agreed within seconds that the case has to be returned. I can only hope now that Otterbox feels the pain financially of trying to abuse their good name to make more money by cheaping out on this one. All to common with today's companies unfortunately. I don't know if I will ever even look at Otterbox for my phones after this.

Bullet Proof!

Perfect fit that totally seals the HDX inside a cocoon of hard plastic, flexible rubber/silicone. All features work without interference from the on/off & volume buttons to the speakers.

Comes with a captive silicone screen protector that does not in anyway, alter or obstruct the excellent display (Retina who?). Feel free to use a stylus or your finger, but no extra pressure(or tapping) is needed for the touch screen to work for any function. I think it may even enhance the touch screen function, even though it's probably 4-6mils thick.

The only minor issue was that the flexible outer case locks in to the plastic so well, it was hard to get it apart. Think "Zip Lock", and just place a fingernail in the seam to start the process.

The inner case has the captive screen protector/frame and a hard plastic back. These two snap apart and you place the HDX between them and snap back together. The flexible, black silicone/rubber outer back case slips over the back of the inner case 'sandwich' and locks into a precise cut groove around the outside of the 'sandwich'. The top hard plastic cover also contains the 4-way stand and just snaps over everything.

Once you tablet is in, like other OtterBox products, it is not meant to come apart during use. Yes it adds a little bulk, but unless you use it to hammer nails, you need not fear mechanical damage.

While this won't save your HDX if your U-Boat is sinking, (the speakers, camera lens, mics are necessarily exposed behind recessed plastic "portholes"), it will protect it from almost anything else.

Solid, just like any other OtterBox. This product does have an integral screen protector, as you would expect. The listing wasn't clear on this point when I bought it, so I thought you might want to know. All buttons and ports are covered and the buttons and screen work as well in the case as the Fire HDX works without it. Someone else will have to test whether it's waterproof. Sorry.

First let me say that this is one of the best products you can buy to protect your Kindle Fire HDX. It give all around protection and sure it is alittle pricey but if you have bought any Otterbox in the past it has been more than your average case because it more than your average case. People complain that it's bulky or heavy well drop it with a cheap thin case and you will be asking why didn't I buy the otterbox. You want thin ten don't add a case take your chances.Don't complain about products for what they are because you should have know that BEFORE you bought it. It's not the products fault, its your fault. Get this case well worth the price.

Great for the essentials!

I took a chance on this case- I had an Otterbox Defender for my iPhone 5 which I loved but I was intrigued by the idea of not having to carry a wallet for the essentials (driver license, credit card, debit card, and some Cash).

I can fit 3 cards in this case plus two folded bills of Cash. My "go to" card is always on top (it's the easiest to get out) and the case does exactly what I want it to do- carries the essentials so I grab my phone and go. It also protects my phone (it's the Commuter series, so it's not quite as rugged as the Defender but overall it's about the same size which isn't bad at all).

The cards inside are very secure and the case is designed so it's impossible for your stuff to fall out. My one complaint was that the screen protector it came with had stickers on it that didn't peel off cleanly and made it pretty much worthless so I don't use it- but I'm so satisfied with the case that it doesn't affect me giving it 5 stars.

More Trouble Than It Should Be

I like the idea of a wallet case for my iPhone and doing away with my wallet. The fewer things to carry, the better. But wallet cases are very limited. The idea is that they are cases for occasional use, such as when you are going out for the night and only want to carry an ID and credit card. This wallet case can only carry three cards or two cards and three folded bills.

Otterbox Commuter cases are two piece cases that have a silicone layer covered by a hard shell. They aren’t my favorite because the hardshell doesn’t quite fit right leaving tiny gaps. Two piece cases take more effort to get on and off which is more of a problem on a case made for occasional use. The black on black color scheme turns the handsome iPhone into an all-black design-free box.

Otter likes to put rubber plugs over the jack openings which offers extra protection, but is a pain when you want to charge or plug in headphones. The volume button covers work well, but the on/standby button cover make it stiff and lacking in tactile feel. Otter provides a clear screen protector and applicator card.

Cards fit in the wallet case by sliding down the back panel revealing the compartment. The slide is stiff and there is no grip for your finger to press against. You have to press against smooth sloping plastic. When you get the slide open, you have to dig you finger nail under the top card so you can pry it up and out.

This wallet case is too much trouble for me. But if it fits your needs, this case should offer good protection and durability. Two and a half stars.

The geek equivalent of the double-edged sword

This is another well made case from Otterbox. I've had Otterbox cases for my iPhones and iPads and they've always performed well. They aren't stylish, but they protect your device. I've used them for travel mostly, and have never been disappointed.

This "Wallet Case" checks all the usual Otterbox, um, boxes: Protective? Check. Grippy? Check. 80's Volvo-like Styling? Check. Yep, it's an Otterbox all right.

But one with a twist. Because this case resolves that nagging dilemma we all have: how do I carry my iPhone AND my credit and ID cards in one place?

Dilemma resolved. This case is that place.

Otterbox added a sliding tray on the back of one of their tough cases. From the front and back and the added "bump" isn't noticeable. In profile however or in the palm of your hand it's there alright. Think of the top of a 747 and you'll get the idea. A little curvature on an otherwise continuous line.

In that bump of a tray you can fit a pair of credit cards and your driver's license. Great for the minimalist traveler or a night out clubbing. That is if you go to hipster clubs where geeky dual-purpose cases are cool.

I don't go to clubs like that. I don't go to clubs. But if I did, this is the case I would take.

Go ahead and drop it while dancing crazily to the DJ's Devo dub: both your iPhone and credit cards will be just fine.

Just don't lose it. Then you'll never be able to call that girl in the Warby Parker frames who put her number into your phone. Plus you'll have no way to pay for the cab ride home. Double bummer, dude.

So there you go. The "OtterBox Commuter Series Wallet Case for iPhone 5 & 5S"--the geek equivalent of the double-edged sword.

Dont listen to the poor reviews!!

So I have wanted one of these for a while now and went on and read a LOT of the reviews here on Amazon. To be honest some of the poor reviews had me a little worried! But I am leaving this review to ASSURE you that nearly ALL of the negative reviews were definitely coming from operator errors (if you get my drift) and people who didnt have ANY idea what they were buying...

Clearly the Defender series is going to be a little beefy. Which I would HOPE is why your looking at this sort of case! For a big-bad iphone defending case! and that is JUST what you get! So the reviews on size I feel are unfair, based on the fact that you should have known its a sturdier case. (I find this NO problem for the protection it provides. Being a girl, I couldnt fit an iphone in my pants pocket to begin with, so its not an issue...And I would like to stress its not THAT big.

Some people (a good number) have complained about a hole on the top being for the headphones being on the wrong side...This is NOT the case people! You must open the flap to use your headphones...The hole is for the MICROPHONE! So do not fret. There is NO issue there...just people simply misunderstanding the product.

I read multiple reviews where people complained about being able to charge or undo the bottom flap, etc. Ok. It is silicone people. soft, flexible silicone...So NO you DONT need to completely take apart the cover to charge your phone. You simply lift that flap and plug in your phone. There is NO issue with it closing, because its not supposed to be closed OR completely open while charging...Again, silicone does not hinge... In fact, I am charging my right now with zero issue. All the flaps are really easy to open and close and I see no issue with them being flimsy, or too firm either.

I saw one or two people say they thought it decreased the sensitivity of the screen. I have not had that problem. As long as you get the right model and it fits well there is no reason for it to have any effect, it is just a regular old screen guard just like any other you'd buy on the market and shouldnt (and wont) effect the use of your screen. The people who complained that it messed up the lightness of the screen may have had it set to auto, and I know mine sometimes in certain light decides to stick with a darker back light setting than I would prefer. So once again, I am sure this is something that one could adjust in the settings of your phone, and not be a problem with the case.

So in conclusion, this is an AWESOME product. If you are looking for a really tough case, that looks great and you UNDERSTAND that a thin, one sided, snap on case will not be very tough...then this is for you! Please note that a LOT of the negative reviews come from people's misuse or misunderstanding of the product. NOT the product itself. I cant say how happy I am with this product and I am SO glad I went ahead regardless of those negative reviews.

Works great with a verizon iphone 4! UPDATED, AND NOW 4S!

Seems that some AT&T stores have stocked these on their shelves a little earlier than most stores, so I grabbed one and put it on my iphone 4 right away. (Verizon iPhone 4, not 4S)

As far as form and fit goes, it's really similar to the current iphone 4 defender series, the major differences are the cut outs for the front and the back. Also to make note, these cases work on ALL models of the iPhone, whether you have a sprint, verizon, or AT&T model, they'll all work.

Otterbox's old defender series didnt properly work with the white iphone 4 due to the location change of the proximity sensor. People would be dialing with their cheek, ear, face, etc because the screen wouldnt shut off. Now with the larger cut out, otterbox has fixed this issue and made the case truly work with all models of the iphone 4/4S, both white and black.

Otterbox has also changed the rear camera opening to be one huge opening. This is because of some complaints of the flash reflecting off the old case and washing out photos. It's also because the camera is slightly different on the 4S, which requires the huge opening we're starting to see on every case available.

The colors are a lot better, they match, they're catchier. They've still left the back cut out which shows the apple logo. I find this cut out really useless and unnecessary, but it's nice they also add the same clear protective film that's used on the screen protector.

The built in screen protector feels the same, still gets finger prints and dust on it, but a quick and easy wipe with a cloth or shirt cleans it off.

If you have a white iphone, or are getting the new 4S on october 14th, this is the case for you! It'll protect your phone from everyday drops, accidents, and bumps. This case is a tank and definitely worth the money. Though it is a steep fifty dollars compared to the price of the "old" defender series currently, it's still worth the extra money.

EDIT: I just got my 4S in the mail a few hours ago and let it fully charge up before using. After it was done, I put the old otterbox defender on the 4S and it works fine with the black model, but not my sister's white model. The proximity sensor on the black does turn on and off just fine. The issue is though, the camera looks blurry and washed out with the case on. This truly is why otterbox made the huge opening on the new 4S cases. So get one of the new defenders ASAP, otherwise your pictures will look like crap.

UPDATE 10/25/2011:

I've been using this new case on the 4S for a while now, enough to have a solid review based off real world use. It's a great case, and I still stand by my original first hand review. One thing I noticed on the old defender was that dust would get in from somewhere, and then sneak under screen protector and look horrible when the screen was off. I haven't noticed any dust on the new 4S case underneath the screen. I dropped my phone when handing it to a friend, and it held up. It fell about 3-4 feet in the air, and it looks unharmed, so I'm glad I really have the 4S defender on my iphone, otherwise who knows, I might be stuck with broken glass on my screen.

The colors are a bit different in real life, than what Otterbox shows on their website, and here on amazon, but they're still beautiful and good looking.

Again, I recommend this case!

Nice upgrade from the original iPhone 4 Defender case

I used the original Otterbox Defender case for my iPhone 4s, and while it worked ok, this version is a definite improvement. The hard plastic case and the screen protector seem to be the same as the original, other than having larger cut outs for the camera/flash and the front camera/light sensor/proximity sensor area. I never had issues using the 4s camera with the older version case, but I did with the proximity sensor and this case fixes that issue.

The holster has been changed to update the release mechanism. The tab that holds the phone in the holster has been shaped differently in order to make the phone easier to clip in and release.

The biggest upgrade is to the rubber jacket that fits over the plastic case. The rubber seems to be of much higher quality. It has a firmer, more substantial feel, and doesn't seem like it will lose shape over time. It gives the case a better grip in your hand and generally feels more solid overall.

The opening for the silent mode switch seems to still be off center, but not enough to be of concern.

If you are on the fence about whether to get the older iPhone 4 Otterbox Defender for your 4S or this updated version, I'd definitely pay the extra $10 or so and get the new version.

Good phone case; great fit, solid protection, but...

I just purchased a Galaxy S3, and wanted the cover that offered the best protection for my device. My kids have Otterbox Defenders for their iPhones; my sons is really beat up and literally falling to pieces, but the phone it protects is in excellent shape, without a scratch or mark. I chose this case because my last phone - a Blackberry Bold 9650 - got a deep scratch on the case and the screen the first month I had it, and it drove me crazy for two years. A good Otterbox cover like the Defender would have prevented both.

PROs
1. The cover DOES provide a very high degree of drop protection for my device. The hard inner shell has a soft inner cushion that stabilizes the device and increases the shock resistance slghtly.
2. The rubber-like outer covering fits snugly around the inner shell, and dramatically increases shock resistance.
3. The earbud and mini-USB ports at the top and bottom of the phone are covered by flexible 'tabs' that protect the device from dirt/dust/gunk intrusion.
4. The volume rocker and power button are completely encased. It takes just a bit more effort to press the buttons, but it is NOT difficult.
5. The cover comes with a built-in screen protector. It is a rigid plastic that does not adhere to the device screen like soft plastic does. This doesn't seem to affect the touch-screen sensitivity, though. Tip: be really careful to thoroughly clean the inside of the rigid screen protector. Check it before closing to ensure there are no particles adhered to it from static cling - these will leave noticable 'bumps' on your screen, and they COULD scratch the inner face of the screen protector or even your device screen. Have a can of compressed air handy and give both the screen protector and device screen a shot before closing it up.
6. The manufacturer tells you the included belt clip can double as a kick stand that can be adjusted to a variety of viewing angles. This is true, after you lock the clip into the open position. Be careful, though - the 'notch' that holds the clip in the open position is light plastic. It's not very easy to pry the plastic notch up to release the clip, and one could actually break it or the belt clip itself with a little too much force. If the kickstand thing is something you really want, consider purchasing a case with a REAL kick stand.
7. The case is designed to fit into the belt clip with the screen turned in toward your body, but will let the phone be inserted with the screen turned out if you choose.

CONs
1. VERY limited color choices; way fewer than the less expensive Commuter series covers.
2. The case is somewhat bulky. You consciously choose the high degree of protection over the ability to slip the device easily and inconspicuously into your pocket with this case.
3. The rubber tabs that cover the top and bottom ports (ear jack on top, mini-usb port on the bottom) are VERY difficult to open. I can predict with a high degree of certainty that they won't make it a year without being ripped off the cover. It's nice that they fit so snugly, but they are recessed so that one must use a tool to pry them out to access the port within. Let your thumbnail grow out a bit and you'll be all set.
4. Once inserted into the shell, the whole thing snaps into the belt clip with an audible 'CLICK'. This snap-in feature makes it just a little difficult to quickly remove the device from the clip to answer a call. Practice your quick-draw with the case in the belt clip.

The Otterbox Defender fits my Samsung Galaxy S3 like a glove. Everything lines up precisely, and, with the port covers closed, it offers an extremely high degree of protection for my device.

I'm not particularly pleased with the available color choices for the Defender series. I have the blue SGS3, and don't understand why I can't simply get a blue cover to match the phone. The closest I could get is the 'Atomic' color scheme - dark blue with neon green highlights. Yay. I don't like how difficult it is to open the ear jack port and mini-usb port covers; I firmly believe these will be torn off in six months or less from struggling to open them each time I want to recharge the phone or use ear buds. Once that occurs this case will allow dirt/gunk to accumulate inside the case on the phone or in the phone jacks it is supposed to protect. This is my biggest dislike of an otherwise excellent cover.

Based on the degree of shock resistance from this cover, the incredibly good fit, and precise alignment of holes and bumps, I give 5 stars. Due to the difficulty in opening the port covers and limited color availability, the cover is dinged 1 star. As long as you understand this cover is BULKY, and are REALLY careful and patient with the port covers you won't be disappointed.

Awesome price for a great case

I have never liked cases much because they are so bulky and honestly, the way I handle my phones I don't need a case. I take very good care of my phones. Since the S3 is such an expensive phone (I paid full price) I decided to get a case. I did a lot of research and decided on either the defender or commuter series. The common complaint with the commuter series is that the back is slick and any time you toss is on something it slides right off. So I went with the defender series. Other reviews claim that it is bulky, I disagree. It adds a little thickness to the phone but really not all that much. It's still much slimmer than other phones out there such as an iphone. Another complaint stated that the glass on the case sat off the glass of the phone. I as well disagree with this. If the case is put on correctly you will have no gap between the case and phone. The case is very difficult to put on if you do not know what you are doing. The directions it comes with suck! On otterbox's website they have a video walking you through how to put it on. Following the video made it super easy and took like 2 minutes. This case retails for $60, honestly this is an amazing deal and a great case.

Worth the wait.

Otterbox was slow getting these out to the suppliers but it was worth the wait. I have been carrying my phone around for two weeks worried every moment about dropping the thing. I received the Otterbox Defender case yesterday and couldn't be happier with the product. It fits perfectly and looks great. All of the ports and buttons work well. The touch screen is responsive and clear. I especially love the way it feels in my hand. Before the phone felt thin and fragile, now with the cover on it feels very solid and strong. I am a business traveler and I am also pleased with the belt clip. I will be using the belt clip extensively as go through airports and security lines. I have researched all of the competing phone covers at the big box stores and online, it is pretty clear that Otterbox sets the standard that everybody else tries to live up to.

Update 2014: I still say this case provided great protection from drops. I just got tired of the loose silicone outer shell. I'm sure I was part of the reason the outer shell got so loose since I was frequently taking the phone out of the case to changes batteries. I have since moved on to a UAG case that I am happy with.

Armor fit for a Mandalorian.

When I initially got my HDX I was surprised at how light and thin it was. Naturally this made it compact and easy to carry, but also it worried me that it could break easily. Well now, I'm not worried about that at all. The instructions were a bit vague, but it took me only a few minutes(and since I bite my nails, a small screwdriver) to get it open and installed. Just make sure you thoroughly clean your screen, the back of the built in screen protector and if you used a cleaner be sure to let them dry. I had to open mine back up to finish drying it so it didn't streak. Another nice thing about it is since the edges are flared out it gives you a much better grip on it without having to put any pressure on the screen, which had me worried about either damaging it or dropping it. After putting it on, granted it adds some weight and size but it is now, nigh indestructible. I initially was worried about dropping 80 bucks on a case, but this was money well spent.

Later, after the case was on I was getting in my car and accidentally dropped it. Now I'm sitting here watching Netflix on my undamaged HDX while they are pouring new cement into the crater in my driveway. I'm not sure if Otterbox is in any way affiliated with the Mandalorians or the Imperium of Man, but their armor crafting skill suggests that they may be. An excellent product which I would recommend to anyone using an HDX.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The included instructions were difficult, however the website video was adequate to put it together. One problem I experienced was lint/fuzz on the inside of the screen protector. Had to dismantle the entire thing several times to clean it. Finally I used eyeglass cleaner and cloth to get the screen clear of debris. That seems to have worked.

Protection is excellent...strong and tough... although the weight and bulk are about twice the original item. The case does make it heavy to hold. Not a problem if you use a stand instead of handheld for reading. However, I found this stand to be a bit awkward...too straight to use in the up position(C) and too low to use in the down positions (A&B). Position D is somewhat OK but still difficult for reading.

All in all, great protection, poor instructions and limited stand positions.

Best protection for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. It protects the entire device. A note to Otter Box is to make a detachable swivel stand for more convenience and a lighter case. The case is a little heavy. Other than those 2 issues, I love it. I can even feel comfortable with letting my grandson carry Kindle up and down stairs without worrying about him damaging it. Make sure Kindle is turned off before placing it in the case. I say this only because my text to speech would not work until I turned Kindle off and then turned it back on. Everything works perfect now. I don't even have a complaint about the $79.00 cost after receiving it.

Outstanding protection with definite drawbacks - UPDATED

Review Update (5/28)

I recently switched to another case after over 7 months of hard use. Three reasons: 1) aesthetics, 2) the headphone jack, and 3)the screen protector. I've left my original review intact after the break.

Summary: While this case is no longer the best protection available for the iPhone 5, it's a great value as a solid no-frills case. This case is still compelling at its new price point despite how long its been on the market. See my original review below for more detail.

Additional Thoughts: The headphone jack issue and screen protector feel ultimately had me searching for a new case. Many of the newer cases, including some from Otter Box, are much more feature-rich and offer even better protection than this case at higher price points.

Updated Aesthetics: The utilitarian look and feel of the case turns out to have at least one major benefit: you can beat this case up without guilt. I had several major drops and bumps with this case. The result? Zero damage to the iPhone and negligible visible damage to the Otter Box rubber bumper. My newer case, while nicer to look at, doesn't tolerate wear and tear nearly as well.

Original Review (9/24)

Summary: If you're looking for the best protection for your iPhone 5 right now, this is the case you're looking for. The fit on the iPhone 5 is superb, and the peace of mind it will bring you is worth the cost of entry if protection is the utmost priority. The case makes some compromises to afford you that protection, which could be a dealbreaker if you're not totally onboard with a bulkier case. I'll detail those below.

Installation: Installation is a breeze if you've ever used an OtterBox case before (I hadn't). The best way to start is to open up the tab on the upper left corner by the volume controls, then pull the silicone bumper off the case with your fingertips. Things are easy from that point on.

Durability: Rock solid. I field tested this in NYC over the weekend, and the case acquitted itself very well. Wasn't at all worried about it, and minor bumps and the usual commuter jostling while trekking around the city were no match for this case. I haven't dropped it yet, but would be willing to bet the phone that it will survive the usual momentarily clumsiness onto city sidewalks.

Bulk/Aesthetics: These are the biggest--and related--points of contention. Much has been said about this, so I'll say this plainly: if you don't like the pictures of this case, nothing about seeing this in person will change your mind. From a usability standpoint, if you're a male wearing slim or skinny jeans, the front pocket is out of the question. Back pockets work surprisingly well, and retrieving the phone quickly is slower but still doable. If you're a female and wear skinny jeans, you'll need to carry this in your purse for sure. You'll also need to make room accordingly.

Feel: Somewhat subjective, but important enough to warrant mentioning. The screen protector that comes with the front panel of the hardshell interior doesn't quite sit flush the screen. As a result, the case takes off some of the "snappiness" of the UI. This is most noticeable when you lightly swipe the screen, since it sometimes doesn't register. Additionally, you can actually feel the screen depress slightly while working with the phone. This is less annoying than when I first noticed it, but it's still an issue I'm struggling with personally.

Headphone jack: The headphone jack is troubling, and this is where the bulk of the case works against it. Earbuds with square, 90 degree jacks (or even straight jacks that are bulkier than usual) will NOT fit on this case. The bulk of the case means that a 3.5mm that isn't straight and slim won't sit flush with the jack. This also applies for the auxiliary cables to connect to your car's entertainment system. (For reference, I'm using the Monster aux cables, which are slightly larger at the 3.5mm end.)

Lightning cover: I thought the cover for this was well done. The lightning connector sits well protected by a cover that integrates nicely with the case.

Recap/Bottom Line: This case is worth the 4 stars for the sheer amount of abuse it can withstand. The tradeoffs to usability and aesthetics are understandable, but noteworthy. If you've read this far and are still on the fence, you should probably weigh this case against a slimmer case with a separate screen protector.

Balanced review after testing it for a day with iPhone 5

I got my iPhone 5 today (through carrier sources) though it's yet to be activated and the first thing I did naturally was put the Otterbox Defender case on it. I had the Defender for my 3GS and it protected my phone all these years. Didn't have the iPhone 4/4S so I can't compare it to that. Quick impressions so far:

PROTECTION - Protection wise, the iPhone 5 Defender is at par with the 3GS. Industrial grade protection with complete coverage. Same concept and overall design, though the silicone feels slightly thicker and more solid in the 5. The silicone has a matte finish compared to the smooth finish in the 3GS, which hopefully should help avoid dust and lint - this was the only drawback with the 3GS case, it needed cleaning frequently.

BUTTONS/PORTS - Power and volume buttons are covered with silicone shaped like the buttons themselves. No problem pressing either of these buttons with the silicone. The headphone jack, charging port, and silent button have silicone plugs that can be pulled out to expose the jacks. (TIP - to open the plugs, insert nail and push the top silicone part higher to get behind the plug to pull it out. Hope this makes sense. The headphone plug is tiny and it can take some time getting used to opening it). The charging port plug, when opened, keeps snapping back into the case, which means it has to be held open with one hand to insert the charger. Insignificant issue, and I'm hoping that with use, this piece will loosen up a bit so that it stays open if needed. Opening at the back for the Apple logo is covered with a transparent plastic film. The front camera/speaker, the back camera/flash, and the two speakers at the bottom are left open and are the only exposed parts of the phone.

SCREEN COVERAGE - Clear plastic film on the screen integrated into the case, the touchscreen experience is as good with the film as it is without the case. The transparent film creates a tiny layer of air or moisture between itself and the screen, which can create watermarks on the screen. This was an issue with the 3GS as well. (TIP - I had read several forums for my 3GS that recommended applying baby powder before installing this case, but I personally didn't find that to be a lasting solution. Applying an Anti-Glare film to the phone's screen before installing the case was the best solution. I am still waiting for my Anti-Glare film to come in, but I installed a spare I had for my 3GS just to see if that solved the issue with the 5, and it did).

HOLSTER - The silicone is kept intact with two plastic tabs on the side. This really helps keep the silicone in shape and prevents it from stretching or loosening over time. These tabs also work as the locking mechanism for the holster. The case can be inserted facing in or out in the holster, a fine improvement by Otterbox. Most such holsters I have seen only allow face-in orientation (3GS allowed only face-in which I found annoying when going for a run). This holster has a fully rotating belt clip so that it can be attached vertically or horizontally on the belt. No chance of the case falling out, nice secure fit. The holster is much better and ergonomically designed than the 3GS version. It is easier to access the phone with this design.

Here are a few details that I would have liked to see improved/addressed:

- Front and back camera openings - the two openings are huge! The front camera/speaker/light sensor opening is one big opening. For the 3GS version (3GS only has speaker on the front, no camera) and from what I have seen for the 4S, the cases had a precision opening which provided better overall coverage. For the back, the opening is approximately 30-40% bigger than it should be for the camera and flash. It would have been nice to have more precise openings on both places for even better protection.

- Headphone jack plug - this perhaps has more to do with the placement of the headphone jack itself, but the case opening is really small and it's not very smooth to open the silicone plug. For the 3GS, the silicone plug went around the headphone jack to the back, which made opening it a breeze. They could have used the same design for the 5 as well. With the current design, it takes time opening the headphone plug. It's entirely possible it is just something that takes getting used to, or that the silicone will loosen over time making it easier to open.

- The iPhone 5 is a super sleek, light, and slick looking device. Putting the Defender case makes it bulky (more than doubles the thickness). Now this is a pro in that it offers super-protection which I cannot live without. The downside is that it takes away the aesthetic beauty of the iPhone.

I bought this in black when that was the only color available. Now it seems there are a lot more choices. Wish I had waited for the Glacier (just a personal preference)!

Other than these minor issues, I am overall very happy with this case and I hope to use it for several years to come, just I did with my 3GS Defender. Yes, it's slightly expensive, but it's also peace of mind.

UPDATE 10-12-12

The watermark issue seems to be persistent with this case and nothing seems to permanently help in this regard. The anti-glare film bridges the gap somewhat but only for a few days. The screen in the case lifts right back up after a few days and creates the watermark issue all over again making it difficult to use the screen. I am sending this back to get a different case. Yes, I want to protect my iPhone which is why I was willing to put up with the bulk of this case, but I can't give up functionality.

An Otterbox is an Otterbox

I have owned and used an Otterbox case for my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 and now, finally, for my iPhone 5.

These cases are great and offer a lot of protection. With that being said, you have to anticipate this case making your phone a little bit bulkier. I personally tend to love the added "bulk" that this case adds to my phone because I have very large hands and long fingers. This case gives my phone the extra bulk needed to allow me to grip it and text without letting my hands get fatigued or painful.

As with all of their other products, this case is extremely well-made and fits the phone perfectly. If you've never owned an Otterbox before then perhaps you should check out some pictures before deciding if this case is right for you. If you've ever owned an Otterbox... Then you know exactly how great these things are.

Here's a funny side story:

I once left my iPhone 4 (inside of its Otterbox, of course) on the of the roof of my car after the gym and drove away. While going 50 m.p.h I heard a huge "thud" on the side of my door and had no clue as to what it was. Long story short, I realized that my phone had basically fallen off of the roof, slammed into my door and hit the pavement and was completely fine. The case and the phone didn't even have a dent.
