5Great Monitor A++
By Mike
This is a great monitor.
The colors are extremely sharp and it's super bright on High Dynamic or Game Mode.
Make sure you toss out the VGA cable that's included (its Blue ) and buy a DVI cable with this monitor.
The difference is major! I bought BlueRigger DVI to DVI Digital Dual-Link Cable also on amazon. Best DVI cable on the market.

The only downside is it does not come with a DVI cable.

You wont regret it, just buy this monitor.

1I really wanted to like this monitor
By TwixTurtle
Got this on sale for ~$110, which was a steal compared to its normal price.

However, as soon as I turned this monitor on I decided to return it.
The quality of colors and whites is quite good, but the blacks are TERRIBLE. As another review stated, even turning the brightness down to 0% did not put the darks on par with my cheap little asus monitor.

Also, the viewing angle is abysmal. From directly in front of the monitor, the bottom appeared lighter than the top. It only took a couple degrees difference to significantly distort the colors. Many led monitors have viewing angle issues, but this is the worst I have encountered.

Upon screwing in the base, I found the monitor itself to be more wobbly than my previous ones, and not adjustable in the least. It is also not designed to accommodate any mounts, as the back is flush, and the base extends from the bottom of the monitor.

In short: Would not recommend.

5Very nice.
By Stephen E. Shoesmith
The first thing I noticed with this monitor is the external power transformer. Usually being the first component of a flat-screen to die, this is a nice addition now making it a user-replaceable part.

It also makes the monitor profile flatter and lighter. I did notice that the brightness controls for the monitor were turned up to maximum which are way too high for most applications. It also suffers from a very bad "line-of-sight" problem where the brightness of the image is directly proportional to the angle at which you look at it. Direct on viewing gives you a nice, full color picture. Whereas viewing from even 15 degrees off center makes the image "grey-out".

If you constantly look at your monitor from your chair then this shouldn't be a problem. If you have to view this monitor from the side or off angle then I would pass on this.

4Great Monitor for a Great Price
By Dattucha
Just got it a couple of weeks ago and so far I'm very happy with it. The screen is bright and beautiful (LED technology) and it comes with an HDMI connection. And all the specs are good.

As always, the built-in speakers are completely useless - sound like crap (I still don't get why they even bother putting it in). I gotta say the vertical viewing angle is not the greatest (looking up at the screen is slightly darker...looking down at it brighter). But then again it's very much a standard for monitors in this price range.

In the end, there's one thing you have to keep in mind: while it's probably one of the very best monitors you can get for under $200 (if not THE)...it's not exactly the best monitor money can buy. Having done my research, the ones starting $400-$500 range are basically in a different ballpark. So you pretty much get what you pay for. And in this case, for this price, you get PLENTY...in fact WAY MORE than you ever could before. So if you're cool with not having "the best" for now...and need a good monitor for cheap - this is the one. For sure.

2Inverse ghosting
By G. Carter
Type VE247H into google and one of the suggested completions will be 'ghosting fix'. This monitor uses something called "Overdrive" to make the response time 2ms instead of 5ms. The result is 'inverse ghosting' -- basically, black font on a white background will leave a 'trail.' The only way to fix this is to go into the service menu by holding the power button and menu button (while the monitor is off), then pressing the menu button again (once the monitor is on), and setting 'OD' to off. Sadly, this has to be done everytime you switch inputs or turn the monitor off. Very annoying, avoid the VE24x series at all costs. Asus has no fix for this nor any plans to remedy the situation.

5Perfect for the price - ASUS VE247H
By H. Lie
I have been using it for a month. It is sharp, bright and color is great!

The initial setting is just too bright. There is a mode button to toggle from Standard, to Theater, to ... . All of them are too bright.

I use the Standard mode, and change the brightness to 60%, and contrast to 60%. It is looking good now. Agree with other reviewer that the light is rather directional, but it is the same for most low end LCD monitors. When I am viewing and adjusting photos, I just have to make sure my viewing position is correct.

It is a great product for that price range.

5Great!
By C. Diaz
For the price, you really can't beat it. I did a lot of shopping around and I'm glad I finally settled on this one. I have an Asus laptop that I've been thoroughly impressed with and now this monitor.

The one note I should make is some of the materials initially led me to believe this might have an HDMI port. Be warned that it does not...this would make the item extra awesome but alas it will have to remain just awesome.

3Ok but no HDMI
By JWink
Originally ordered this for my budget build at $99 bucks it is a great price for a 20 inch monitor. However take note that this monitor does not have HDMI so you will not get as good quality display as you would if you spend about 30 bucks more for HD monitor that has a HDMI connection. I personally recommend the Asus VE228H 21.5-Inch Full-HD LED Monitor with Integrated Speakers as for 30 bucks more you get full HD, HDMI connections, and speakers. I exchanged this monitor for that one and I am happy with the better quality screen.

5Wahoo Blue review
By frmark
My 1st review after careful deliberation
After careful consideration of the reviews, I decided to try this device on my I phone 4s. I had been to both the web-site and multiple sites reviewing this product. I decided to order through amazon because I can just return the product if it doesn't work. I am training with coach for 2 Iron man races in 2013. Heart rate stuff important. reviews made me very cautious. I did double check all sources to make sure I have an I phone 4S as described on wahoo blue site. This is important.
GOAL
My goal was to be able to utilize my Iphone 4S to capture heart rate information, training zones, cadence, speed, etc. and to upload to my training peaks account online. I already use multiple APPS to get most information. My dilemma, Buy new Garmin watch or use I-phone 4S (either Ant+ or Bluetoothe). Decided to use bluetoothe and return if it does not work. I decided I would try just the heart rate monitor and see how it goes, then move onto the Speed/cadence later if all goes well. If it doesnt work, I could just return and not waist alot of time. Thanks Amazon.
SHIPPING
Shipping was very fast thru amazon prime..... in 2 days.
SETUP...easy
The product came in a box with few instructions (Slight negative), so I did go to the website to make sure that I followed the directions on the wahoo blue site [...] then followed link to "BLUE HR getting started guide" near the bottom of the page.
Next,
I went to the apple I-store and downloaded the wahoo fitness app prior to trying anything. Wet the transducer, put on the strap, and opened the Wahoo fitness app and followed the directions. this is the sequence... Run settings, heart rate, add a new device. and it paired. back to start page.....push GREEN (get ready) and the heart rate was displayed and it was working. Similar process with Endomondo pro.
Adjustable strap comfortable and adjustable. electrode pads stand out from the rest of strap, easy to wet.
HEART RATE INFO
I a drawer full of Heart rate straps, wore the Wahoo Blue heart rate monitor at the same time as my Polar FT1 and FT4 Coded on multiple 6-8-10 mile runs and 25 mile rides. Virtually identical information with both. Max on the Blue was 2 beats more than the Polar 1 and same on Polar FT4 coded. Average Heart rate the same on all. Have not worn this in the pool. Zones change smoothly and quickly. no lag time with heart rate changes.
UPLOAD
I found that the App that you use will determine upload to training peaks. With Endomondo, when you finish the workout, you must go to the website and upload from Endomondo. With Wahoo fitness you are given the option to upload each workout from either the iphone from workout history or at the end of the workout. Both are very easy. This is nice but will upload to a bunch of other apps also.
Not all apps worked with the Blue HR, some apps do not work. Sport-tracker does not work, you must use their heart rate strap. Conclusion is that some apps work and some do not, but I think that each app may or may not work, double check the list on the website for training peaks and wahoo blue. I know that Wahoo fitness does work. All data including heart rate zones uploaded along with maps and data. Conclusion, the apps control this heart rate monitor. Make sure the app you use is listed with wahoo blue Compatible Apps: Wahoo Fitness, MotionX-GPS, RunKeeper, Runmeter, Cyclemeter, MapMyRUN, MapMyRIDE, 321run, Endomondo, and more!
BATTERY USE
Been using for 2 weeks now, no problems.
All heart rate zones transferred to training peaks. Went on a 2 hour run yesterday and started at 80% battery on the I-Phone 4S. Turned off WiFi and closed all apps except both Endomondo and Wahoo Fitness. Left Blue tooth on obviously. Listened to music, had a 10 minute call while running, and had a set of headphones plugged into I-phone, I also turn off the display most of the time. Battery left after 2 hours.....65% (15% battery Usage). Did another similar 2 hour run and left the display on the entire time and I used 28% of battery over 2 hours . Conclusion, blue tooth isn't using much battery, screen monitor does.
CONCLUSION
I will move onto the Speed/Cadence and see how that works. So far very pleased with this heart rate monitor. Do not need to pair each time. once it is set up it seems to work. Have also used simultaneously with a Bluetooth headset, all works well. 2 Bluetooth devices at once. So far.....I liika dis.
Hope this helps

4All of the good and bad reviews are correct!
By PrimeAddict
Right off the bat, I'll say YES it was an "out of the box failure." But I'm rating it good anyway.

First things first - it came out of the box with a dead battery. Oops. Yeah, that's a bummer, maybe they got a bad batch of batteries from Sony or maybe these have been sitting on a shelf too long. Fortunately I have a drawer full of CR2032 cells for various other devices, so replacing the battery was a simple matter.

Upon inserting a new battery, it IMMEDIATELY paired with the open Wahoo Utility app on my iPhone 4S.

Now for the other weird stuff. I hope this can save others some confusion. And I blame this not on Wahoo or the device, but on Apple's implementation of Bluetooth 4.0 or possibly on the BT4 standard itself.

BT4 devices need to be paired not with the DEVICE, but with the APPLICATION. So logically, once it was paired with the Wahoo Utility app, I switched to the Wahoo Fitness app. It wouldn't pair. Because the Wahoo Utility was still sitting in the background, paired with the heartrate monitor. I had to pull up the task switcher on my iPhone, KILL the Wahoo Utiility app, and then try pairing again with the Wahoo Fitness app, and it worked immediately.

Same thing happened when I tried pairing with Runkeeper. Because the Wahoo Fitness app was still maintaining a connection in the background, the app had to be killed before Runkeeper would pair. But ultimately, it did pair, and once paired it was accurate and responsive.

The device works fine, but the technology is not intuitive, and Wahoo does a poor job of providing documentation or support, which prevents me from giving a 5 star review. But with a little bit of effort, I think this is still the best option for someone looking to integrate a heartrate monitor with their iPhone-based workout tracking routine.

If you buy one and have trouble with pairing, first make sure you're wearing the monitor - if it's not on your chest, it's probably asleep. Next, try swapping batteries. Next try killing any apps which have attempted to pair with it. Next try restarting your iPhone. If it doesn't work after that, send it back!

4Very Nice, but I Prefer the Polar H7
By Joseph
Summary: This is a nice bluetooth heart rate monitor that uses the low energy bluetooth standard to communicate with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or 3rd generation iPad. It's a great choice, particularly if you like Wahoo's free fitness app. However, after trying this unit and the similar Polar H7 Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Sensor, I personally prefer the Polar. I'll break down some of the similarities and differences so that you can make your own choice.

1. Fit: The Wahoo unit is an elastic belt with a snap on each side, plus a small transmitter. You dampen the contact points on the belt, wrap it around your chest, then snap each side into one side of the transmitter, which then holds the belt closed. (It's hard to describe, but the belt doesn't literally connect - it as a gap which is bridged by the transmitter.) The belt has two slides that let you size it to fit, and is comfortable. I like that you can unhook the transmitter to turn the belt off, which saves power -- in older HRMs, the transmitter was built in and did not turn off until the belt lost contact.

The Polar unit is similar, except that the belt has a hook that holds it closed, then you snap the unit onto the belt after that. (Again, it's hard to describe, but with the Polar, the belt itself goes all the way around your chest and connects with a bra-strap style hook on the side. The transmitter then clips on top of the belt.)

Result: Tie - both units are comfortable and work well.

2. Compatibility: Both units use low energy bluetooth, which saves power, but is only built into the newest generation of devices. They both work fine with my iPhone 4S and my 3rd generation iPad, and are both rated compatible with the iPhone 5. (Some of the reviewers have complaints about the Polar's compatibility with some iPhone uses, but I've never had a problem).

Unfortunately, neither one is rated as compatible with android or windows devices, even if those devices have low energy bluetooth built in. That's unfortunate, and I hope that it gets resolved soon. (A few people have reportedly gotten the Polar to work in limited cases, and the Wahoo might too, but I would not count on it without a lot of research.)

The Polar does win on one compatibility issue -- it also transmits standard HRM data on a 5 gz band. As a result, it will show your heart rate on gym equipment that accepts standard HRM data, and works with my basic Polar watch, my rowing machine, etc. (In fact, maybe it works too well -- last week at the gym, it put my HR on my machine AND on my neighbor's!) I haven't been able to get the Wahoo monitor to show up on any of my non-bluetooth receivers, so if backwards compatibility is important to you, take a look at the Polar.

Result: Slight advantage to the Polar on backwards compatibility.

3. Apps: In my tests, both the Wahoo and the Polar work with Runkeeper. I don't have Endomondo, but understand they both work with that too. If you prefer one of those apps, then it's a wash. However, Wahoo's app works with Wahoo (obviously), and Digifit currently works only with Polar. I like Digifit a lot, so I prefer the Polar on this element, but your preference will obviously affect your vote. (Note that it costs a few dollars to activate cardio monitoring in Digifit, while the Wahoo app is free, but IMHO it's worth it).

Result: Depends on your app preference.

4. Price: The price of both units is likely to vary over time, so I'll let you do the comparison. As of the time of this review, the Polar is slightly less expensive, even if you are going to buy the full version of Digifit, but definitely check before you make your decision.

Summary: This is a great unit for a user with a newer iOS device, especially if you like the Wahoo app. The Polar H7 is a very close competitor though, so your choice will probably come down to which app you like better.

5met my expectations
By barells
I'm 6'2, so any monitor that I've bought has always been too short for me.
This monitor stand did the trick. But, one word of caution, is that I had
to use the highest level (about 5 inches), so if you need more height
extension then 5 inches, you might want to look at alternatives. For me
the 5 inches was perfect.

5Very solid, especially for the price
By Olaf Piesche
Clamps to the desk with two finger screws, which doesn't seem like it would be very stable, but once installed it's rock solid. No wobble, it doesn't feel or look cheap. Very solid, relatively easy to install; height adjustment is only possible for both monitors at a time, not individually, but that's no big drawback. Cable clamps along each arm, which feel a bit flimsy but work. Comes with a surprisingly good, big, rubber coated allen wrench to tighten the screw that holds the arms vertically. Quick adjustment of the monitors is not possible, so it's a set-it-and forget-it mount. If you need to adjust monitor height frequently (such as transitioning from sitting to standing), this one's not for you. It's no-frills, but very good build quality. I don't think I'd be able to find another monitor mount of this quality for this price.

5Way better than expected given the price
By William Pallies
This stand is extremely sturdy and adjustable. I've had it for over a year now and have not had any problems with it. When I first bought it, I was expecting something satisfactory at best, given the low price. Every other VESA mount I had seen was at least double to quadruple the price, so I figured I'd be cheap and get something that works barely. Instead, this stand exceeded my expectations in every category. It mounts easily, is solid, looks good, and lets me adjust the display's tilt and angle with ease.

Picked up this stand over the holidays. It has excellent quality! I have 2 Samsung 23" monitors mounted on it with no problems. VESA screws that came in the kit worked excellent. Unit is very adjustable, tilt, pan, height, etc etc. It even looks great!. If you are looking to clean up the clutter that sits in and around your monitor bases then this fits the bill. Even comes with built in clips to manage your cords! I would highly recommend.

5Great Vibrant Colors
By Clarity
I've been wanting a new LED screen for a while and I stumbled upon this one. It has great vibrant color and a lot of customization features to boot. The Magic Upscale and Magic Angle are pretty cool, but they don't really make much of a difference to me as I'm using it mostly for gaming. I think the way to navigate the menus is rather intuitive but the nob (4-Direction, push to bring up menu) on the bottom underneath the Samsung Logo seemed to be an awkward place to put the controls. I wish it had a height adjustment so I could match it with the height of my ASUS monitor, but not really something I think it's worth docking any stars for. The screen does tilt upward though about 25~30 degrees from vertical position but does not tilt downwards. If the monitor happens to fail, pixels go dead or anything else, will update. Overall, happy with the screen and would recommend.

5Good choice
By LMF
I looked online and decided to also check in a store before deciding on a new monitor. This one stood out as being much prettier in person with nice crisp colors and clear edges to the graphics compared to the Asus model that was next to it. I am happy I got this one instead I think it is worth the extra $20 I paid for better quality.

5Excellent Budget e-IPS (midrange) Monitor
By Dawen Shen
First off to address the complaints of "graininess" observed by some owners due to the matte finish: Lower your brightness! The pearly shimmery effect is only noticeble at the maximum 100% brightness which is around 270 cd/m2 (~20 cd/m2 higher than advertised). However, at the max brightness level, most users would find it uncomfortable to use for more than 30 minutes anyway. The factory settings are only set to this max limit to impress buyers in stores and when they turn on the monitor for the first time! The recommended comfortable brightness level for any monitor during regular use is 120 cd/m2 which translates to a setting of 35-40% brightness on this model. The user can easily change this setting through the OSD menu using the built in buttons.

Pros:
Price - Comparable e-IPS displays from other manufacturers are $200+ (see LG)

e-IPS panel - Viewable from virtually any angle

Matte display - Reflections from nearby lights do not impact the display. Great for nightime/sunlight users.

Negligible ghosting - 5ms response time combined with the built in Trace-free feature set to 60 eliminates most ghosting. This makes the monitor great for gaming and HD video watching. Only professional FPS players would need a higher response time.

Thin - Roughly the thickness of a MacBook Pro! Very slim on a desk or a mount

100mm VESA - Standard mounting holes w/ removable black rubber covers to hide the holes for users that prefer to rock the stand (blends in if not mounted)

Power efficient - 24-30 W after calibration

3 yr warranty/exchange: Asus will replace your monitor within 3 years and pay for shipping both ways. I haven't tried this myself, but I hear Asus customer service is above average for the industry.

Thinner than average bezel

Matte back - Has a carbon-fiber-like texture on the back that makes it look modern

Cons:
No built in gamma correction - Must be adjusted using your video card

e-IPS - Unlike higher quality IPS panels there is a very small amount of color/gamma distortion if viewed at an angle. However it is still exponentially better than any TN panel. Higher quality panels that completely remove thus effect cost $400+ currently and only graphic designers/photo editors really need that level of color accuracy.

$40 more than cheap TN panels - Extra cost for the latest gen display. Better viewing angles and colors. You be the judge.

Recommended calibration settings:
Brightness: 35
Contrast: 80
Red: 100
Green: 100
Blue: 98
Trace free: 60

These are the settings I came up with after calibration. They can be used as a starting point or ballpark figures if you don't feel like spending hours reading up on monitor calibration techniques. Your actual ideal monitor might vary slightly.

TL:DR
Best price/value monitor currently on the market <$200

5Good Monitor
By Matthew Bayne
I just bought two of these monitors, after comparing many monitors. I am happy with my purchase. I have hooked these up via DVI to my computer with them on Dual LCD Monitor Stand desk clamp holds up to 24" lcd monitors Fits perfectly by the way. No flickering, started up great. No dead pixels. I use two HP 2311x 23-Inch LED Monitor - Black at work, and they have pretty bad color inversion at even slight angles (15-20% shift will turn whites a bit yellow), a bit annoying. Not on these new monitors.
Price: The price is very good for an IPS monitor. Now is this professional grade? No. But a small % increase in color gamut with a huge % increase in price is not justifiable to me.
Anti-Glare coating: I did look for this because I have read about a very thick anti-glare coating. To me, the closer you are, ther more noticable it is. At first I was worried because I noticed a pearl essence, a rainbow like color. This was 2 inches from the screen. Once I actually sat back, I don't notice it. I also like the anti-glare coating. No distracting reflections from my window or lights.
Color: The color is great. Out of the box, it does need some calibration, but please, just a little bit, once. It has excellent grey and black levels (as in being able to see subtle differences in shades of grey and black.)
Viewing angle: Great. No color inversion (as expected).
Stand: Wobbly. This is to be expected. No worse than any other stand for any other monitor under $350. Removes nicely once mounted.
Light bleed: I think there is some when there is a solid black background. I don't really know, because I never have a solid black screen. I don't notice it, so it doesn't matter to me.

Purchase reasoning: I wanted budget pricing, but good color reproduction. I game some, design some, etc. I like the low power consumption, with the clarity and anti-glare coat. One big point for me is the integrated power converter, muted color of the bezel, and physical buttons. The internal power converter is great for mounting, less mess. The physical buttons I trust more than the touch buttons on other monitors. This monitor is also light ~ 7 lbs. Add in the 3 year warranty, and I think this is a good deal.

Hope this helps.

5Beautiful Display
By William D. Pierce
I am an avid photographer and have been doing all of my editing on a 4:3, 19" monitor. I have wanted an IPS display for a long time, but the cost had been prohibitive and they were a compromise when it came to video and gaming. When the prices and response times began to drop dramatically, I felt it was time to take the plunge. There are several very good displays in the under $300 range and the decision wasn't an easy one. The Asus 239 showed a lot of promise both in user and professional reviews. The one consistent knock was the stand and that was easily rectified with a fully adjustable Gateway garage sale find ($5.00).
Brightness was the only substantial adjustment made out of the box, with the balance of factory settings to be very good. I found "0" bad pixels and the contrast and sharpness are exceptional. The first time I opened Lightroom, my jaw dropped. My photos have never looked better. This display has allowed me to see things in my photos I had missed with my previous monitor. I have found myself going back through my favorite photos and re-adjusting them now that I can appreciate their full color potential.
I have also watched several movies and videos as well as play a couple of my favorite games and have noticed little to no streaking or ghosting. Given what I paid for this display, it has become one of the best purchases I've made.

52013 new monitor, bought for multiscreen, compare with ASUS
By Kelvin Wong
This is an initial review, I will update later with a more thorough review of the picture quality. I'm an engineer, so I'm technologically savvy and very picky, but not well versed in monitor picture quality metrics, so I will run some tests on a later date. I think it's important to state that I am planning to use this monitor for a multiscreen solution, so a thin bezel was a factor in my purchase. If you plan to line up more than one of these side by side, you would have noticed this model and perhaps the ASUS VN247H-P for their relatively thinner bezels. There isn't a whole lot of information out for these two monitors, because they both came out just this year about a month ago, so maybe you can take advantage of the research I did. When I bought this monitor the ASUS model had free shipping and a discount making it $20 cheaper, but at the time of writing that discount is gone and the monitor is actually $10 more compared to this one. I'm guessing because that monitor is very popular as well.

This monitor is amazingly sleek, imagine a 1.5 cm thick slice of glass and metal, and all the connectors barely protrude out the back. The packaging it came in was two slabs of styrofoam with seemingly not much space in between, where the monitor was sandwiched. I was surprised because this monitor is actually frameless, and that was not stated in the description, which is obviously great. A comparable model with a frameless design is the ASUS MX239H, also out recently, but that one retails for $230. I really think Acer outdid itself here, but their marketing is just not as ostentatious about their product as ASUS. Why do I say that? Besides the design of this monitor matching the $230 counterpart of ASUS, this monitor is IPS! while the earlier ASUS model I mentioned (now selling for $190) is only TN! AND the stand of that monitor has received complaints to be flimsy. Not here, this stand is solid and it is METAL, not plastic! A $700 monitor I bought a few years back from Samsung didn't even have this! I doubt the ASUS counterpart does either. This is in every way a $230+ product if I use ASUS as a benchmark, which of course is legitimate as ASUS is revered as the more reliable and quality brand. This is a steal.

Part of why I leaned towards the Acer because there is another reviewer, much better informed than myself regarding picture quality that reviewed about half a dozen of these screens, and gave ASUS a fairly low rating in general and said the one bright spot was another Acer he got. Regarding the IPS, I can have this screen dead perpendicular to my face and still make out the picture, it's that ridiculous. Not that you ever need to watch movies that way but if that's your thing, your time has come. IPS sells at a premium to TN so this is a great feature over the ASUS. On arrival, there are no stuck or dead pixels that I can see yet, I will check again more throughly later. One word of caution, although frameless, the screen is not borderless. Like the $230 ASUS model, the border just sits under the glass, I will update with the exact width later, but I'm guessing it's 1.5 cm. I think the fact that Acer is sort of an underdog to ASUS and has less marketing forces it to price its products more aggressively so this is definitely great value for a beautiful piece of hardware.

Another thing regarding Amazon, their customer service is phenomenal. The monitor was shipped to an old address of mine. My orders default to that address from 5 years ago, and presumably I did not click my new address or it did not register. Either way, when I called, Erin H from customer service did not give me any hassle, did not charge extra shipping, and actually shipped me another unit immediately! She even put in 2-day shipping! This is unreal. So they basically took the risk of losing or breaking that other monitor and just gave me a brand new different unit at no charge with faster shipping. The unit came the next day. I honestly cannot think of a way their service can be improved. I hope Erin gets a raise.

All in all, I'm glad I went through Amazon. My alternative was newegg, and nothing against them, I'm just saying Amazon is great. The monitor is spectacular. I will update later with some picture tests and metrics. I have not tweaked anything not downloaded any color drivers/enhancers as some ASUS monitor reviewers suggest as crucial for their models.

5Better than I expected! Love it!
By Chris
Pros:
-Gloss screen, seems like glass(good quality)
-Great Back lighting! more than enough....had to turn it down
-Interface to adjust things is EASY to use...learned it in 1-2min
-Best bezel I've ever seen on a monitor
seriously...i'm tired of seeing monitors with horrible flashy glossy bezels, this is how its done right
-the monitor's stand is GREAT and doesn't shake as much as other monitors....looks simple and gets the job done...i love it because it doesn't look flashy and plastic-y...its very elegant
-IPS panel, great viewing angles and color
-DVI INPUT
I'm listing that as a Pro because I'm starting to see monitors without DVI and only hdmi/VGA
-All cables included! including a vga cable....I feel sorry for you if you're using a vga cable, no offense.
-No dead pixel! yay!
-PRICE, very good for what you get (currently 180$)
-surround 3 Monitor Gaming? look no further, this is it.
btw i'm jealous if you are surround gaming with 3 of these Beauties.

Cons:
None, unless you dislike glossy screens
....or if you like TN panels better

Other thoughts:
-I bought this monitor because its a glossy monitor, why?, because I like my blacks not to be gray and text to be crystal clear.
-I always hear people complaining about gloss, they obviously don't care about color accuracy (I cant stand matte finishes personally)
-This monitor actually matches with my Corsair 650D pretty well.
-This panel is PERFECT for artists and photo editors.
-I feel that there needs to be more online reviews and pictures of this monitor online.
-This monitor seems to blow away all the other monitors at its price point currently.

5Amazing picture quality
By user
I decided to purchase 3 of these glossy 1080p monitors instead of an apple cinema display. I'm so glad I did, not only are 3 of these monitors $400 cheaper, but you get so much more screen area for applications. Games seem to be much more realistic on this glossy screen than the matte screen that I used to have of the same size, its harder to see the pixels, and the colors pop off the screen. Don't rate this product low because the image doesn't go all the way to the edge of the monitor, you should already know that before you buy it. I can say that these are still better for multi-screen gaming and multitasking than almost all other monitors I've looked at because even thought the image doesn't go all the way to the edge, it's still very close to the edge. The fake brushed aluminum (plastic) base and bottom frame looks great, you get the look of brushed aluminum, but without fingerprints. I recommend this monitor to everyone, its just perfect. The only bad thing about this monitor would be that it doesn't have mounting holes on the back, but again, you should know this prior to buying. It has VGA, DVI, and HDMI connections. And I must say, the first game I played on this monitor was Crysis 1 maxed settings, and WOW, it was like a different game compared to my old matte 23" 1080p screen, just amazing with glossy finish. I also wish the power button on the lower right corner was placed right under the acer logo on the center of the frame not only making it easier to locate, but being right where the support arm is, the monitor will remain completly still when being turned on or off. The acer logo looks great too, cant really see it without looking hard, its black and blends in well with the frame.

4Love it, after fixing sleep issue
By M
StarTech... if you're reading this, try to fix this, please! I even did analysis and found a workaround for you. The least you can do is take my assessment into account and resolve the issue.

Minus 1 star for the fact DisplayLink/StarTech cannot introduce drivers/software to resolve the adapter sleep issue. If I had not figured a solution out on my own, this product would have received only 2-stars.

This device is perfect, after I created a batch script to fix the issue where the two external monitors would stay asleep after the computer has been awaken. Will explain how to create your own after the "Cons" section below.

Some people have mentioned this occurs to them once in a while. For me, the issue occurs most of the time after the computer wakes from sleep mode.

Pros:
1) When functional, delivers perfect digital video/audio (audio on HDMI port only) to two external 1920x1080 monitors over a USB 2.0 connection. The device is connected to a hub, which also connects the keyboard and mouse.
2) Can display dvd quality to the two external monitors simultaneously, without too much cpu usage.
3) I can't speak for gaming, but my primary purpose is to use my laptop as a development machine. For development and other office functions, the adapter is more than adequate.
4) Works with Mac Mini running Lion OS as well. No wake-on-sleep issues, like I encountered on Windows 7 and 8 computers.
5) Self powered. No additional power required.
6) Customer service. They weren't able to figure out the issue, but at least they tried.

Cons:
1) The two external monitors connected to the adapter typically do not function after the laptop (Windows 8) resumes from sleep mode. I would have to unplug and reattach the USB cable to re-enable the adapter. This is not a good solution, as I'm trying to minimize the wear to the USB port and it's a pain to physically unplug/reattach the USB cable.

Fix:
I contacted StarTech regarding my issue. They told me that I should disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the USB Hubs listed within the Device Manager section. Unfortunately, they ignored the fact I told them the issue occurs, REGARDLESS of whether I connect the adapter directly to the laptop OR via a USB hub. But, as I said before, they tried... btw... I did try their recommendation, even though I knew it would not work. It didn't work...

Then, I performed some analysis of the processes running on my computer and discovered there is a Windows service that controls functionality and communication between the computer and the adapter... the DisplayLinkService.

Through the Windows Services management console, I was able to re-enable the two external monitors by restarting the DisplayLinkService.

Therefore, I created a batch file (FixDisplay.bat) and added the following three lines to the batch file and saved it to my desktop for easy access:

sc stop DisplayLinkService
sleep 2
sc start DisplayLinkService

Let me explain each command, so you're aware of what's going on and to assure you this is not a malware script. First line stops the DisplayLinkService. Second line pauses the batch request to allow the stop batch request to complete. The final command line starts the DisplayLinkService.

Now, whenever the external monitors do not wake up after the computer wakes from sleep mode, I simply double-click the FixDisplay.bat file that I saved to my desktop. Just a note... depending on your UAC setting, you might have to enable the batch file to run under an elevated account (i.e. Administrator), as the commands in the batch file start/stop an installed Windows service.

The best solution would be if the drivers actually worked flawlessly to wake up the adapter properly. But short of DisplayLink and/or StarTech fixing this issue, my ad-hoc solution works. The solution definitely beats unplugging/reattaching the USB cable that is inaccessible.

4Works great, even on my Mac
By Kevin Mentch
Got this as a gift after looking all over for something that would work on a Mac, however when I first tried to set it up it did not work at all. Seems as though it is not Mac compatible, but after some tinkering I was able to get it to work on my Macbook Air running OS X 10.8.4. The key is the correct driver, do not install or use the one that comes with the adapter. I figured out who actually makes this thing and went to them and they have the correct driver. It is made by a company called Magic Control Technology Corp, and you can find the drivers needed here: [...] and the direct link to the zip download here: [...]

I hope this helps everyone with getting this working on their Mac as it took me about a 4 or so hours to figure all this out.

2Works but the software created problems.
By Jimmi
The device works great and my 2560x1600 monitor looks awesome.

Con: The software created some problems. As soon as I installed it, shockwave started crashing in google chrome. I have to reboot a few times a day due to this problem. It is starting to get very annoying.

Update #1: I spent some time with tech support and they said that the driver will cause conflicts with programs that use hardware acceleration. I turned off hardware acceleration in chrome and everything seems to be fixed. I changed my review from 3 stars to 4 stars. They should warn you about this before installing the software.

Update #2: Down to 2 stars. Disabling hardware acceleration helped a bit but there are still a lot of problems with the firmware. Here are some of the issues:

- If your software program won't let you disable hardware acceleration, you are screwed. For example, Evernote app was unusable.

- Before this software, my Samsung Series 9 fan would never kick on, after installing the software, it is almost always on.

- I have the top of the line Series 9 and still get some jittering in the video.

- I get random screen flashes every 20 minutes or so.

5100% sRGB, AH-IPS - Great Monitor!
By Unknown Vincent
Note: my review was for the ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED 22" -
I see Amazon has grouped 3 different sizes together - including ViewSonic VX2370SMH-LED 23", and ViewSonic VX2770SMH-LED 27" -
although there are many common traits - be sure to check the screen size for any review.

I bought this after doing a lot of research, as I do a lot of photography and post processing.

sRGB preset (factory calibrated)
100% sRGB gamut
AH-IPS
frameless design
slim

This is a very important monitor (along with the slightly larger sibling VX2370Smh-LED) for photographers or anyone who does serious graphics/color work - as it has a factory calibrated preset for the sRGB colorspace @ 100% sRGB gamut - this is the industry standard color space for photos and display monitors.

To me this is HUGE.

The panels is also a AH-IPS - this is currently the latest technology used on the very high pixel density smartphone screens,
it has also been certified color accurate by Intertek.

The fact that it's frameless (except for a narrow internal border) makes it a very good looking screen too.

I am very pleased with my purchase - knowing I have a monitor that has a factory calibrated preset of 100% sRGB -
this is actually better for me than any other monitor that may be able to claim a larger/wider color gamut -
since those monitors would need calibration otherwise they could potentially be mis-adjusted -
whereas this monitor has 100% sRGB on a preset without the need to calibrate...
and at a price that's only just above the lowest budget monitor
- just a few months ago this kind of monitor would have cost $$hundreds more

Highly recommended for any accurate photographic and color/graphics work.

4Great after some adjustments
By Amazon Customer
I looked at about 10 other IPS monitors in this price range and finally decided on this one. I needed a monitor that I could calibrate for web design and photo-editing purposes. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:
Aesthetically pleasing.
Stand is stable.
Wide viewing angles.
No backlight bleeds.
Able to adjust colors.
No glare or distracting anti-glare coating that other people reported on other brands.
Built-in speakers (they're like laptop speakers, but this isn't important to me).
No eye strain so far.

Cons:
Can't adjust monitor height, so mine sits on books (but I knew this going in).
It can't swivel but it does tilt (again, I knew this going in).
No DVI cable. It does come with an HDMI cable.

A few notes:

This only happens with HDMI and not DVI. My 1yo PC has ATI Radeon HD4350 with latest drivers. The image did not fill the screen at 1920x1080, and the text was very fuzzy. I had to go into Catalyst Control Center and change the scaling options under "My Digital Flat Panels." It still leaves ~1/2" bands on top and sides, and for some reason the OSD to adjust horizontal/vertical position and other things are grayed out (didn't test if it was the same thing with DVI), but I'm OK with it. The text became much clearer, but I went ahead and adjusted cleartype text in Win7 anyway.

Some people reported with other brand monitors that the text was still blurry after this, so they had to disable audio over HDMI. I did not have to do this.

Out of the box on Native color mode, it needed a few adjustments. I turned down the brightness and adjusted the contrast using a website that showed black and white points. The color balance was a little off (the white looked a little yellow-ish), so I used Win7 built-in calibration tool to adjust the color. I also adjusted the gamma using the built-in tool, but I used a website for gamma reference as it was way easier and better than what Win7 gives you.

The control buttons are tucked in, and it's touch-sensitive (responds very well), so it does take some getting used to. But once it's set, I hardly ever have to adjust again, so this doesn't bother me.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. I went from a 17" laptop, so this monitor looks gigantic, and the colors are great. I didn't realize how much eye strain my laptop was causing until I got this monitor. I just wish the monitor had more ergonomic adjustment options, but with all the other options like HDMI and built-in speakers, I can't complain.

5Wonderful Monitor
By James P. Garin
It used to be easy... there were bad, fast acting monitors and really expensive, high color accuracy monitors. Today there are a lot of ones in the middle...low cost IPS (like this one)...several other technologies that are similar and some better TN ones.

I don't really play games, so high speed was not a concern...I do a lot of image adjustment, so color accuracy was. Did not want to spend a lot of money (being cheap)...wanted to get something worth more than it costs. (really cheap).

First issue was to decide how big and what resolution. I have both 1080 and 1440 24inch monitors. What I find with the high resolution one is that, in the native format, text is really small...tiny actually. So you increase the font size.. then stuff on internet does not display right.. so back and forth you go. With the 1080...it is ok..but prices have changed.. and now 27 inch is a reasonable price.. but only in 1080. Can one see jagged letters.. ah, no. Can you see the pixels..yea from about 8 inches. (this will depend a lot on how the monitor is connected and what resolution one runs).

So what one gets from this monitor is a low cost IPS monitor, a huge, reasonably uniform screen and a lovely view. Mine has no dead pixels...some slight edge bleed in both lower corners when showing black, and the best out of the box color accuracy I have ever seen. I happen to have a eye-one spectrophotometer, so calibration is quick and very effective, only it actually did almost nothing to it.. it was so small I could not tell the difference between before and after. It is very bright.

This monitor will only do a bit less than 80% of the adobe color space.. but appears to be able to do close to 100% of sRGB..with the typical blue being off issue.

Is it perfect.. no. plugging the cable in is actually a bit hard, as I had to bend the fitting to get it plugged in..putting the stand on is simple, but it would be easy to damage the panel, depending on how you layed it down. Not a fan of the adjustment buttons (not that I had to use them). I much prefer the inside power supply than having that extra box dangling.

Bottom line.. you get a very good monitor for a fairly low cost...and that is about as good as I would expect.

4Very Good For FPS Gaming
By tomcat9
I purchased this monitor primarily for first-person shooter (FPS) gaming, and then for use with my desktop computer, second. This monitor has three video input ports: one HDMI; one VGA DE-15; one DVI. Straight out of the box, the screen is set screamingly bright, so you will have to dumb it down.

First, my Xbox 360 is connected to the single HDMI port. I have been playing Halo: Reach and for a long time had difficulty seeing opponents' shields pop on my old Samsung SyncMaster 940mw. With this monitor, I can easily see when opponents are taking damage and their shields are beginning to glow up to when their shields burst. Since I began using this monitor, my headshot ratio has been trending up.

These are my monitor settings for Halo: Reach:

Contrast: 65
Brightness: 65
Response time: Advanced
Color Adjust: Native
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Eco Mode: Standard (must be in standard to activate Game Mode) (See Note 1.)
Game Mode: Off (See Note 1.)
Audio: 100 (w/ X11 Turtle Beach headset plugged into the blue audio out jack) (See Note 2.)

Secondly, video for my old desktop computer is connected via the VGA DE-15 port. I use external speakers and don't bother with the built-in speakers. The monitor settings stay as above except that I set Eco Mode on Optimize to further lessen the brightness of the screen without having to mess with the monitor's contrast/brightness controls. Just remember to set Eco Mode back to standard if you want to play video games in Game Mode.

Conclusion:
I like this monitor. I believe it performs as advertised and very well for my application. The speakers, whose sound is directed through the ventilation holes on the top rear of the monitor, are weak but they do their job. Even though it is barely noticeable, my monitor came with one defective pixel that is colored pink when it is lit. Because I believe every brand-new monitor should not have a single defective pixel fresh out of the box, I am giving the ViewSonic VX2452mh four stars. As an affordably priced gaming monitor, I would say that this one is a keeper and would recommend to a friend.

Notes:
1. Game Mode is good for dimly lit games like Dead Space. Game Mode does not affect response time. It is not necessary to play Halo: Reach with Game Mode active because it only makes the images look washed out; also, set Halo: Reach's screen brightness setting (not the monitor's) to High.

2. For whatever reason, Halo: Reach audio via HDMI is at a level too low to sound any richer off the built-in speakers.

5Stellar monitor for the money.
By Griffin Bean
This monitor is clearly a winner among mid-sized entry priced displays.
Don't expect studio or production quality image reproduction at this price point, but enjoy the crisp, clear and ghost free images this unit produces.

After some initial setup and calibration using AVS HD 709 the picture looks very good in a moderately lit room.

Before questioning the quality of this display, consider the following:
1- Monitors and TV's come out of the box set to be on in a very bright, harshly lit showroom/sales floor.
2- Consider the equipment you are connected to and the age of its video processing componentry.
3- Your video settings on the playback device may not be optimal.

As a certified and industry employed professional installer I can tell you this is not quite near the big money commercial grade picture quality a few officionados seek, but for everyday use it is very good, especially at the street price available.

2Disappointing
By NCF8710
To put this review into perspective, I purchased this monitor to replace a 6 year old HP LP2065 20" LCD monitor which is not HDCP compliant. On installing this monitor, I noted that the image was bright and lacking in contrast. Brightness and contrast are adjustable in the manual mode in the menu. Adjustments made the image better, but was still lacking in black level performance. Fine text was definitely softer than that on the HP monitor. When scrolling text, a yellow smear was visible trailing the text. This effect was mostly eliminated when switching to the "Game" mode. However, switching to this mode sets the brightness and contrast to fixed values. They are no longer manually adjustable. I had attended a wedding and took pictures with my digital camera. I processed the raw files and adjusted them the best I could based on the monitor's image. I had trouble getting them to look right. The color accuracy of this monitor is definitely sub-par. When I printed some of these pictures, they were dark and dull looking, not at all how they looked on the screen. I put back the old HP monitor and looked at the processed images. They were dark and dull on the screen, exactly how they printed. I reprocessed the raw files and now have good looking prints. At this point, I packed up the monitor for return. It cost me just under $15 to ship it back. Lesson learned. Here is a summary:

Pros
HDCP compliant
Inexpensive
Light weight
Bright image
No hot or dead pixels
Good horizontal viewing angle
Comes with a complete set of cables

Cons
No height adjustment
Mediocre black level
Poor vertical viewing angle
Inaccurate colors
Scroll smear
Very limited image adjustments
Unsuitable for photographic image processing
Soft fine text

This monitor would be suitable for non image critical applications or gaming where its fast response and bright image would be a plus. As for me, I'll be shopping for something better.

5Not Too Basic and Not Too High Tech
By AthenaKTT
Before settling on the Polar FT7 Heart Rate Monitor, I did a lot of research on the various types of HRM out there. I was looking for a HRM that wouldn't just give me my heart rate, but I also wanted a bit more features, but I didn't need a lot of features that the higher numbered FT models offered.

When I saw the FT7 model, I was surprised to see so little reviews or mentions of this model. I'm not sure why, maybe this is a newer model or Polar just prefers directing people to the more expensive models because I kept seeing numerous reviews for the F6 or F7, FT40, and FT60 models.

After comparing various Polar HRMs, I settled for the FT7 because it had all the features that I was looking for in a HRM.

Watch/HRM

- Monitors heart rates. I found the monitoring to be accurate except underwater. (I'll go into detail about that a bit later.)
- Counts Calories. The Calorie counter seems to be quite accurate. I have used it for walking, spinning classes, swimming, and strength training sessions and the calorie counts are reasonable.
- Target heart rate graph. The graph is useful for seeing where you are and if you're within your minimum and maximum HR "fitness" ranges during a session.
- Very user friendly. Even though there aren't any instructions on setting up the watch, I didn't think they were needed. I didn't even bother looking at the manual until I was done configuring the watch, but I've never been one to read manuals. However, others may find the lack of a detailed manual a bit frustrating.
- Stores Training Files. Which include records of session durations, calories burned, average HR, Maximum HR, and the amount of time your workout HR was spent in the target range.
- Weekly Summaries. This basically sums up the total amount of time spent training, the total calories during each session, and how many sessions during the week.
- Settings are very easy to change especially if you have any weight changes and want to keep an accurate count of calories being burned.
- There is also a backlight, which is quite handy if you're somewhere with minimal lighting.
- I also found out that if you hold the "down arrow" button, you can change the time to a second time zone that you can set by going through the "quick menu" which is accessed by holding down the "backlight button (*)" which also leads to the "button lock" feature. If you hold down the "up arrow" button, you can change the "Watch face" to just display the time and date or the time and date and logo, which is smaller on the face, but it includes seconds and FT7 logo along the bottom.
- The women's watch is black with a gold stripe down the center of the band. I found the design to be all right. It is less flashy and colorful as the other models, which is one reason I like this watch. I can wear it with my work clothes and it does not stand out much.
- User changeable batteries. This was something I really wanted out of my HRM. I never liked sending something to the manufacturer for replacements even under warranty. I just don't like dealing with shipping, waiting, and extra fees.
- Water Resistant. I have used this HRM in the pool and the monitoring is relatively accurate when it actually reads the transmitter. I believe the Polar website notes that in some highly chlorinated pools or seawater the transmitter will not be picked up underwater. The pool in my gym is very chlorinated and there were times when the HRM will not pick up my heart rate. But if I just sit still in the water for a minute or so the watch will pick up the signal again. Though this can get annoying if you are trying to swim laps for endurance. The watch still gives me a fair calculation of calories I have burned during my swim sessions. Though the calorie count is most likely lower since I'm not sure how long the watch is not reading my heart rate during times when I am swimming several laps nonstop. I also tried using this in a saltwater treated pool and the moment I went underwater the transmitter does not work at all. So I'm guessing that this HRM will not work if you are swimming in the ocean.

Chest Strap

- The Chest strap is very comfortable, and I usually don't feel it, but then again it might be because I'm used to having something strapped around my chest all day. And I have had no problems of it slipping. It is also recommended to wet the straps a little. I usually just wet my hands a bit and rub against the cloth area, and I'm good to go.
- User changeable batteries. The transmitter pops off easily from the strap, and like the watch, I can change my own batteries, but unfortunately the watch and transmitter use different types of batteries.
- Another perk is that most of the machines in my gym also pick up the transmitter readings, allowing me not have to keep glancing at my watch while I'm on the elliptical or cycling.

Overall, I really like this watch. For the price I paid, it was worth it and it gives me all the basic things I need to monitor my workout sessions.

If you want a simple watch that gives you fairly accurate heart rates, calorie burns, training records, and user changeable batteries the FT7 is a cheaper option to the FT40 and FT60 models.

3Good monitor, with one main flaw
By Topeka Larry
I've had the ft7 for maybe two weeks now, using it many times, since it is my first heart rate monitor. Overall, i think it is a good deal. It feels and looks like a high-quality instrument - solid, if not "flashy". It fits my wrists just fine and seems to have plenty of adjustment for larger wrists (I have fairly small wrists for a guy, at a "healthy" weight of 157 at 5'8", at age 40). I believe the watch band is anti-microbial (and anyway, has a cool yet subtle almost snakeskin kind of look to it). The band's connection to the watch seems quite integrated and sturdy, with the vertical thickness of the band being the same as the watch where the two meet. The watch's main body, while plenty large, does not dwarf my wrist or anything.

I understand that it is a fairly recent development for Polar that the chest strap and the watch will both take regular batteries, rather than having to order replacements from Polar. Certainly that is more convenient. Also as I reviewed potentially replacing my ft7 (see reason below), I found that it is also a treat to have a fabric strap for the heart signal transmitter, as a lot of manufacturers use plastic or rubber (?). I find the fabric strap to be no discomfort at all.

The "heart touch" (i think that's the name) feature, is at least a cool novelty - bring your watch close to your heart strap and the watch will beep then flash to show the time, then go back to the previous display after a few seconds.

You can manually rotate through several displays as you are training. I would prefer a display that shows the heart rate and the training time at once, but that combination doesn't exist. The heart rate is a part of one of the combo displays, but oddly, it is paired with the time of day rather than the training time.

Also, the timing functions are rudimentary. As far as i can tell (and i've read the manual too), there isn't a timer or stopwatch function separate from the heart rate training - to use any kind of timer you must "start training" which then looks for a heart signal. If you continue without the strap, it will warn you there's no heart signal, but once you acknowledge that, that warning disappears and you'll see the timer again. There is no interval or lap timing or countdown function, which seems odd to me as a newbie, for a $110 watch, even if lesser timer/stopwatch functions might be usual for this heart rate monitor watch industry. The watch just keeps track of your training duration, but you can pause and continue your work as many times as you want.

The recording of your training sessions is exceptional - the manual said up to 99 training files will be saved. I know i've already got over 20 that are definitely in the watch.

It also automatically keeps track of how much time you spend in "fat burning" or "fitness" zones during your workout. The calculation for that is automatic based on the input you gave when you set up the watch. (age, height, weight, maximum heart rate).

I'll emphasize that this watch will allow you to change your maximum heart rate setting, which presumably will change the watch's calculations for your different training zones (I'm not sure how big the effect is, having just learned enough about my probable true maximum heart rate to change it today). I've read that for similarly trained people of the same age in the same athletic endeavors, max HR can differ by as much as 60 bpm (!), so this feature seems very important. I seem to have a much higher max HR than what the usual formulas calculate. (That, or the watch doesn't detect HR well, which I don't think is the case, as I've noticed this tendency for a long time on gym equipment with pulse detectors).

Besides being able to set your own maximum heart rate, the ft7 has a zone alarm, that will beep when your heart rate has exceeded the limit (which you can set). UNFORTUNATELY (and this is why despite liking the watch overall, i will be taking it back), the sound the watch makes is very very low in volume. If I'm biking against the wind - I'll hardly hear it if at all. If I'm running on a quiet trail, I'll probably hear it if i'm listening for it. If i'm running on the sidewalk along a main road, I'll probably not hear it above the vehicle noise. As is, kind of defeats the purpose of having an audible alarm if despite having it I'm always having to steady my hand while running, or let go of the handlebars while riding to see what my heart rate is. I can find no volume adjustment, looking through the watch settings or reading the manual.

I'd like to say I know more about whether this might simply be a problem with my particular watch, or a design defect. I started a forum question at Polar's site, but got little response. One other person said they had the same problem there, last i checked. The watch's alarm-clock function also has a very low volume when it goes off, so perhaps that is an indication that is the particular watch and not a design defect.

The problem has turned what was an acceptable impulse purchase into a situation where I've investigated models much more thoroughly, and I think I'll try a Timex, mostly because they do tend to have much better timer/interval/stopwatch functions, and I'd like to see if they're cheaper prices, on the average, are worth it.

That being said, otherwise I am overall fond of this watch, and likely would have stayed with it.

5Perfect Device For Basic Heart Rate Based Training
By Philip R. Heath
BACKGROUND: Since buying my Garmin Forerunner 305, I found that I hardly scratched the surface in terms of taking advantage of its features. I was also disappointed that it only calculates calories burned if you are running outside. I know that this allows for a more accurate algorithm, but I workout in the gym 90% of the time. So I opted for the Polar FT7 as a simplified device that would give calories burned for all workouts.

SETUP: There isn't a lot to do here. When turning the device on it walks you through basic setup of date, time, and personal information such as age, height, weight, and gender. I wanted to verify that the WearLink unit and watch were able to communicate prior to going for my first workout so I connected the WearLink unit to the chest strap, wet the sensors, and put it on. The wrist unit began receiving heart rate data within a couple of seconds. Satisfied that everything would work OK, I put the watch and chest strap into my gym bag.

USAGE: Since the wrist unit is a digital watch, you could use it as your primary watch since it doesn't have an off button. However, I don't think it is very visually appealing, and I do not plan to do this.

The chest strap seems to be designed for right handed people. I say this because it only attaches on one side, and it felt natural to me. This is different than my Forerunner which had attachments on both sides of the strap to accommodate both lefties and righties.

The buttons on the watch are fairly small and somewhat stiff. While I've gotten used to this, it almost gives it a bit of a cheap feel. This is merely a perception, but it is not one that I had with the Forerunner. That being said, using the FT7 is about as straightforward as you could ask for. After putting the wrist unit and chest strap on, simply push the middle button on the right to establish a connection between the two. When you are ready to begin training, push the button again to start recording your workout.

During your workout, the top and bottom buttons on the right navigate the display between heart rate, calories burned, elapsed time and clock time, and exercise zone (fitness or fat burn based on heart rate). When you are done, press the bottom left button. You can then scroll between resume and stop and select your choice. Once you have stopped, the FT7 displays your summary stats that you can scroll through, and it saves the file with the date and timestamp of your workout.

You can also review your workout history. While in the main time display, press either the up or down button on the right side. You will have a choice of "Settings" or "Data". Selecting "Data" gives you access to week by week information. You can look at weekly summaries as well as data for a specific day. The unit stores up to 99 data files so this should hold 4-6 months of data for most people.

If you need to change any of the information that you entered during setup, you simply choose "Settings", and navigate to the appropriate place.

I was curious how the calorie burn numbers would compare to those of the cardio machines at my gym. I was able to compare with a Precor Elliptical trainer, and I found that the numbers are fairly close. While they did not track identically, they usually came out within 20-30 total calories out of 600 in a 35 minute session. This gives me confidence that the numbers are reasonable, and that what it tells me for activities in other settings are close enough. I also noticed during my session on the Precor that the Elliptical picked up the heart rate from the WearLink unit. This should be the case for any cardio equipment that is labeled for use with Polar technology.

I found the FT7 very easy to use. If you can navigate menu driven software such as Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player you should have no trouble with this device.

CONCLUSION: If you want an easy to use heart rate monitor that tracks calories burned, this is a great place to start. It does what I expect it to do in a straightforward manner. If your needs are not beyond what I have described, there is no reason to spend more money on features that you will not use. If you have questions that I have not addressed, please feel free to ask in the comments section below.
