This was a good value for the price with lots of tech but as delivered it was missing a driver for the cd and required tech support from Dell to correct.

5My First Dell
By nettie7
With the demise of Win XP and the incompatibility of my old desktop with Win 7 or 9, this PC is ideal. My choice now is Win 7, but this one arrives with an upgrade disk to Win 8 as well. It is fast and user friendly.

5Great computer
By Douglas
I bought my wife an i5 version of this computer and liked it so much I bought this one for myself. I haven't gotten it completely configured yet, but so far I am very impressed. Based upon what I have seen so far this is what I have found.

Pro
Very fast
Minimal trial software
Space and power connections for 3 more hard drives
Video card more than adequate for all but high end games
Comes with Windows 8.1 rather than 8
Open slots for two more sticks of ram
Built in wifi (No problems with connectivity)

Con
Keyboard is very basic and wired
Mouse is wired
Power supply probably not enough for video card upgrade
No additional pci slots for second video card
At this price point a small ssd for the OS would have been nice

Overall, unless you are wanted to load up on high-end graphics, this computer will more than fulfill your needs. I added a Samsung 250gb ssd as a boot drive, as well as an additional 2tb mechanical drive, and everything runs perfectly. It required a total of 25 minutes to clone the original boot drive to the ssd, so that is a very easy upgrade. I highly recommend this computer.

5Smooth, Fast, Nice Upgrade
By Chris J Wagner
Upgraded from a dual core to this i7. Also a move from 32 bit to 64 provides increased RAM availability.

I did customize my experience with this machine out of personal preference. I loaded a 256GB Samsung SSD (also bought on Amazon with an Icy Dock) in place of the included 1TB drive. I'll be using that drive for extra storage. There are many SATA ports, so adding an extra drive is no big deal. (I had an extra SATA cable laying around, too. Bonus me.)

In my customized experience, I also loaded Windows 7 professional. As of this post, there are 64 bit drivers for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on Dell's website. I had to change from UEFI to legacy in bios for Win7 to boot normally. I believe UEFI should have worked, but it didn't. No biggie.

I'll be curious how some of my older games and QuickBooks will work on this machine in 64 bit, but that has no bearing on the box itself.

One thing I will say... working extensively with Dell's OptiPlex line, you miss the quick release to get inside the tower and also the removable drive bays. With only few exceptions, those things are completely tool-less. No big deal at all, just an observation.

I'm on Windows update 70 of 104... haha... but so far the machine is very responsive and a noticeable difference over the previous dual core machine.

3Boot failures until a BIOS setting is changed
By W. Warren
It's not a good sign when a brand new computer fails to boot the first time it's turned on. The first image from this computer was an error message "Media Test Failure, check cable". After a couple of hours of troubleshooting, opening the case and checking cables, and finally calling Dell Support, a technician identified the problem. The computer was set to boot in "Legacy" mode instead of "UEFI" mode as required for Windows 8. If you follow instructions at Dell online and reset the BIOS to factory defaults, it will go back to Legacy and fail to boot again. Once I made the proper change in the BIOS to boot via UEFI, it booted fine and seems to be running OK. If this happened to mine, I bet there are at least 19 others (that's how many were available when I ordered) are also affected.
[Edit: I was going to add a picture of the screen, but it seems I can't. The full error message also had "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."]

5DELL has a WINNER with the Venue 8" android!
By DigitalGurl
I ordered this from DELL and have had it approx. 2 weeks. I am more than pleased with the build quality of this device. The back has a nice rubberized texture which makes it quite easy to hold. The display is nice and bright (actually it is VERY bright) and the colors are OK but not as vibrant as my Samsung devices.

This tab is very fast and snappy which is due to the intel processor and 2 gigs of RAM. All apps open fast and run perfect. I haven't had any glitches with any apps that I've installed from the Play Store. Netflix & YouTube work perfect!

I was pleasantly surprised by the minimal amount of apps that was installed on the device. I was expecting a ton of bloatware as that is the norm for DELL on their desktops and laptops. There is only a couple of DELL cloud apps installed and you can easily disable these if you don't want to use them. In other words, this is as close as you will get to a "pure" Android OS without buying a Nexus 7. So, a big thumbs up for DELL on this point.

What you won't be pleased with is the cameras. But, who uses a tablet to take photos? Your phone will produce much better images. So, this is not a deal breaker for me and shouldn't be for anyone interested in buying this tablet.

The speaker is quite loud (much louder than any of my Samsung devices). Plug in some headphones and you will be impressed!

The micro usb port will work with an OTG cable. GPS works great. It does have an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness. This device does NOT support haptic feedback ... so if you are a gamer and need this feature, look elsewhere.

The only thing that I have to gripe about is Adobe Flash Player ... sideloaded it and can't get it to work in any of the browsers that support flash. Maybe it has something to do with Android 4.2.2? The only reason you would need "flash" is to watch Amazon Prime (since they refuse to give us Android users an app). If anyone has been able to install flash and get it to work, please share :o)

For $199 you won't find a better tablet that has 2 gigs of RAM, 2.0 GHZ intel processor and an almost pure Android system.

I will update this review if I have any major problems with the DELL Venue 8.

5BEST 8 inch TABLET FOR THE PRICE, HANDS DOWN. WE LOVE IT!!!
By Amazon Customer
*******************
UPDATE (12/19/2013):

I've had the tablet now for a month and I'm loving it more everyday. Here's why:

1. MUTI-USER ACCOUNT SUPPORT has arrived!!!: Today (12/19/2013), Dell released Android Jelly Bean 4.3 update. For those who need or want multi-user account support, it's available. You can now set up a separate space with/without password protection for each member of your family that shares the tablet. Each user can have their own login, email accounts, notifications, app space, homepage, wallpaper, etc. You can even create Restricted Profiles. I've tested it and it works perfectly. Thank you Dell!

2. Battery lasts me about 8.5 hours of straight use with Wi-Fi and GPS enabled. I set the screen to low since I use it mostly inside and the screen is too bright for my eyes. The screen is the biggest battery drainer.

3. Screen resolution is excellent for an 8" screen. You don't need anything higher for a screen this small. I haven't had any problems with dead pixels, screen lock-ups, or touch sensitivity. In fact, the screen continues to respond to touch despite the fact that I haven't cleaned it once. However, if you get dirty residue on the screen, e.g. from food on your fingers after eating and touching it, you will lose some sensitivity and will need to clean it. But that's true of all tablets. If the screen is clean and you're noticing that it's not responding, make sure that NO OTHER part of your body, i.e. other fingers, thumb, etc., are touching another part of the screen. This screen is 5-point sensitive. That means that it can detect up to 5 fingers/skin touching simultaneously. If the app you're using is not written properly to handle accidental multi-touch, the screen will appear unresponsive when you tap with your dominant finger, e.g. index finger, while holding/touching it with your thumb on your other hand. This is NOT the fault of the tablet. It's caused by a poorly written app that doesn't know what to do when the user accidentally and simultaneously touches another part of the screen, e.g. with your thumb, as you are holding it in the palm of your hand. The glass (even on the edges) is very sensitive to your skin's capacitance/charge. Be aware of this before you conclude that your new tablet is defective.

4. The 2GB of RAM makes a difference. With my Samsung Tab 2, memory would fill up after opening 3 apps and it would slow down to a crawl. Download a Task Manager app, and make sure you close apps that you're not using. This will free up memory and speed up other apps. Most FREE apps are designed to stay open or re-open automatically after you close them so that they can collect as much information about you as possible, or serve you as many ads as possible. Be aware of this. Also, rebooting the tablet while it's recharging overnight helps to clear up any running or hanging apps and will clear the memory and speed up the tablet for the next day's use.

5. The 2GHz CPU makes a difference. It's zippy. My Samsung Tab 2 was much slower.

6. You can install up to a 128GB microSD card, for a total of 160GB of storage with the 32GB version!! Download a good File Manager and try to keep the folders, specially the Download folder clean of installation packages after you've installed them. With the right File Manager, you can even move some apps to the external microSD card to keep the usage of internal storage to a minimum. NOTE: Some apps are written to disallow you from moving them to the external SD card. This is not Dell's fault. The newer versions of Android allow app developers to decide whether or not they want to allow users to move their apps to the external SD card or not. As such, some apps cannot be moved to the external microSD, unless the tablet is rooted. Just remember that.

7. If you're having Wi-Fi problems, install the inSSIDer app and analyze your Wi-Fi coverage, as well as competing interference from other Wi-Fi's on the same channel. You may need to change the channel on your router, or buy a higher gain antenna. This can make a huge difference. I've had EXCELLENT results with my $20 TL-WR841N TP-LINK router. It's flawless, with bug-free firmware. I haven't had to reboot it once in a month, unlike my Linksys router which required daily rebooting, and constantly dropped my VOIP calls.

8. GPS works flawlessly, and along with a good Map/Navigation app, it's one of the best and most powerful uses for this tablet.

9. It's worked flawlessly everyday since I've had it, and I use it 11-16 hours per day. I do everything on it. The only apps that have crashed are a few poorly written apps, mainly free children's games. These apps are written by programmers who do not know how to handle exceptions and memory allocation/de-allocation properly. That's not the fault of Dell or the tablet.

In summary, this is the best tablet on the market at this price point, without question. When Dell releases KitKat Android 4.4, it will be that much better. Buy it, try it, and don't listen to the negative reviews. You won't regret it. I don't believe any of these negative reviews after my experiences with this tablet. And you won't either.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Bought the 2GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage Dell Venue 8 on Thanksgiving for $159. I had also bought the Samsung Tab 2 7.0 with 1GB RAM, 1GHz CPU and 16GB of storage for $149, so my expectations for the Dell Venue 8, for just $10 more than the Samsung were very low. After all, how could I get 2x the hardware and 30% more screen for just $10 more. It doesn't happen. Well, I was wrong. I've been VERY pleasantly surprised. It's faster, hasn't run out of memory or storage, the screen is more responsive despite the fact that I haven't cleaned the oily fingerprints once! I love it!!! The Samsung stopped responding to touch by the 2nd day of intensive use, and I had to keep cleaning it. After receiving and using the Dell Venue, I'm returning the Samsung, it simply cannot compete at this price point. Dell hit one out of the park with this device. The best value hands down. I highly recommend this tablet and I'm not easy to please when it comes to hardware, as I am a computer hardware design engineer. Don't pay attention to any low reviews that you read. They all have an agenda to promote a competitor's product or are just ranting because they expect too much. Instead, buy this from a vendor that has a good return policy like Amazon. Try it, compare it, keep in mind the price that you're paying, and I'm sure that you'll be very happy with your purchase. I know we are and we're picky when it comes to technology.

4Where's the LTE option? Still a great device but would have been nice to be able to order the mobile modem
By S. J McCartin
This is my second tablet, the first was an android 4.0 cheapie off ebay with 512k ram and a 1 ghz processor and a seriously poor screen but what do you want for seventy bucks? That tablet is stuck in a boot loop (common problem with some units) and it's not worth the repair to reload the OS from scratch, it's a future project to try to get a generic android os like uberoid installed on it. I can't find out if the venue has a hardware factory restore mode outside the OS, but for the price I'd think it should.

What's in the box?
Tablet
2Amp power adapter (usb non hard wired micro usb cable)
setup sheet

Setup:
Plug it in
Turn it on, asks for language, time zone and google account information.
Immediately updates the firmware to latest, restarts and downloads updates. (It saw my wifi immediately, I didn't have to do anything at all because I have no security on my access point.)
Automatically connects to google and downloads all your apps and calendars, contacts etc. Anything not compatible with android 4.2 is not downloaded or installed.

Connectors:
Micro usb for data and power adapter, OTG capable
headphone plug, also works for external amplified speakers etc.
micro SD aka transflash card slot

Buttons:
Volume up/down
power (hold down several seconds for hard reset, no reset hole)

I loved this thing from the moment I turned it on. The decent amount of ram and fast cpu makes it positively zippy. The decent quality screen (I understand there are better) really makes it wonderful to use. So far I've watched movies, played a lot of candy crush, did my banking, used the online gateway for Neverwinter and the mobile utility for RIFT, used a kitchen measure conversion utility from the android play store and played a dungeon crawl android game. This tablet handled it all speedily. I did find a game that ran awful slow, probably needs an update for the newer OS. From what I've read Dell has promised that we'll get the newest android KitKat when it is released for everyone other than the test sites, lol. When I ordered this the beginning of November they were saying early december delivery date but I had it in less than two weeks, was I happy! Someone made a comment about flash player, I couldn't get it installed either. But that is really minor, most web pages run great even without flash support. Maybe kitkat will resolve the flash player issue. Battery life is what dell claims, around four hours of continuous use, about two full length movies and maybe a little more. When the screen is off, the standby mode is really efficient, I left it in standby all night a couple of times and the battery was only down a little the next morning when I turned it on; really impressive!

Dell offers extras that you don't need like stylus, etc. The difference between 16 and 32 gb onboard storage was $20.00 so I ordered the bigger storage. Micro SD cards are currently available up to 32 gb and the micro usb slot is OTG (on the go), so with a cable you can plug in any usb drive/zip drive or an external self powered OTG compatible hard drive even. You can buy a usb thumb drive/zip drive on ebay with a regular male usb connector on one side and a micro usb male connector on the other, so you don't even need an otg cable with those. I would really prefer a separate AC plug instead of charging from the usb but few are doing that, my old chinese tablet did but that's apparently not the usual. There are cables on ebay that split with a male and female to let you charge and use the data connection simultaneously. The cables are a few dollars, I think dell should have included one of those in the box myself. Cases are under ten bucks on ebay and you'll probably want a screen protector to protect from scratches and little peanut butter fingers.

The only big thing that aggravated me when I ordered this was the complete lack of the LTE (3g cellular network) modem option. It's mentioned in one place, but never made available during the ordering process. I found some pictures of the internals online, the motherboard has the circuit traces for the sim card slot but there is no hardware for the card to slide into at least on the android 3830 version motherboard. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the battery plugs into the motherboard, it's not hardwired like my cheapie that you'd have to unsolder to change the battery out. Any tech savy type could disassemble this in their sleep, so maybe after the warranty is out i'll see about a new motherboard with the sim card slot. It's really not that big of a deal, most carriers have those wifi hot spot things that act as an access point for several devices. Virgin mobile has one for $70.00 for the device and enough data to do a lot of small things is about $25.00 a month, that might be where I end up going in the future.

After a 9" tablet I was afraid smaller would be annoying but so far 8" is fine, I don't think I'd like the 7" version. This is a great product and you can't do any better on ebay for the same specs. Dell is also providing support in the way of auto updates over the internet instead of download. For the price recommend this to anyone. I looked at the pro but I had to ask myself why you'd want to run a resource hog like windows 8 on so little hardware resources...why? Android is so much more stable and better support and more free apps in my book. Love this thing!

5Great high end computer at a low end price!
By D. Safir
I waited a bit to write this review, as I wanted to test the computer out. I got it as a gift for my girlfriend, so I only get to use it on the weekends. I was shopping for an i3 computer for her and was pleasantly surprised to find this i5 computer for the same price as an i3. I got it for $449 and it's only gone up a little to $479 (I believe). Great price. It was easy to set up and runs fast and quiet. I was pleased to find that, although it said it came with Windows 8, it actually came with 8.1, which allows you to convert this to practically a Windows 7 style computer, for those who don't want to use the tiles. Since this is a desktop computer, I'm assuming that most of you want the classic style and not the tablet style. It's very easy to do by using the following article I got from an IT friend. To find it, just Google "ITPro Windows 8.1 Tips and Tricks". Use the tips in this article and, bingo, you have a Windows 7 computer.

If you're using a different virus software than the McAfee that comes with this, make sure to uninstall McAfee and install your program of choice (I had an open slot for Norton Internet Security so I just went to the website and downloaded it from my account to this computer). Then I went to see if there were necessary updates. There were none to install. If you want to use Microsoft Office 365 trial version that comes with this computer, fine. Just follow the instructions to activate it. That is an online version of office and you pay about $100 a year, so we didn't want that. I purchased Office 2013 Home and Business (as my girlfriend uses Outlook) and installed it with the key code I got. You have to make sure to uninstall the trial Office 365, first, or it will not work, as it will think the key code is for the trial Office 365 and not the one you are installing. There was no problem with the monitor, keyboard or mouse I connected, even though they were old models. It recognized them automatically. I did the printer last, as I wanted the full HP Solution Center, so I went to HP online and downloaded the complete package, plugging in the printer at the prompt.

Everything went smoothly. Using the tips from the link I gave you, I set it up to boot to the desktop and not the tiles. Then I went to the store (which is in the tiles view) and got a free classic Start button that works just like the Windows 7 Start button (in desktop view, there is no Start button until you get one from the Store). Then I got my libraries back, as the article tells you to. For you XP users, the libraries is simply the Windows 7 version of My Documents, except that it has its own folder-looking icon in the lower left of your taskbar, and separates My Pictures, My Music and Documents into separate libraries. Once you get used to it, you actually like this separation better. Also, be aware that if you use Outlook, once you install it and import your Outlook.pst file from your backup, it automatically stores your root Outlook pst file in the Documents section, so you never have to back it up on your computer. Just back up your documents onto an external drive and Outlook is automatically backed up. Set your default programs to be the programs in the classic desktop version, which are different programs from the tiles view (Windows Media Player, Photo Gallery, etc.) so when you click on a file it doesn't switch you to the tiles view. Do the other few hints in the article and you're all set to go. You basically have a Windows 7 computer. It works great.

As it doesn't come with a terrific graphics card, just a sufficient one for the average user, I wouldn't recommend this computer to a heavy gamer. A heavy gamer should probably get an i7 with a 1 Gig dedicated NVidia or AMD graphics card. Otherwise this is a great computer for just about anybody, even heavy multi-taskers. Go for it while the price is still so good. And look at the comments to Techie 1. One person has a link to whatever documentation you need - diagram with specs, user's manual and quick startup guide. Get this computer and have fun!!! Oh, one little thing - the USB3 ports are in the back, a bit of an annoyance if you have a USB3 backup drive and back it up every week. There are 2 USB2 ports in the front which we use, so for us that's not an issue - and it backs up fast, even with USB2.

New comment: It's over 2 months, now, and still no problems with this computer. Still running great. Although it's up to $549 this week, it was $499 last week, so keep watching the price. $549 is still not a bad price. Remember, it's easy to make it run like a Windows 7 computer. You don't have to pay extra for a Windows 7 computer. Oh, I forgot to mention that, although it comes with a CD/DVD burner, I didn't see the burning software in the desktop programs. So I simply went to the store in the tiles view and downloaded a free one. You can always get to the tiles view by clicking on the Windows icon in the lower left of the taskbar. You can get back to your desktop view by clicking on the tile that says desktop. It's easy to go back and forth from one to the other.

Additional Comment: I see from other reviews, and from researching on the Internet that there is another way to restore the classic view. You can download Classic Shell. This seems to do what my steps do, but in one download. It seems to add some nice features, but I've seen some complaints from people that they can't get rid of the "charms" sidebar. The main advantage, it seems to me, are some customizable features, which my steps don't add, mostly to a customizable Windows Explorer. I don't really know if this download is so much better than the steps I have given you, but it seems you have more than one way to make this into a classic view computer.

5Plug in and Play
By W. Randall
I was able to pull this from the box, set it up, and be online checking email and doing all of my basic web surfing within an hour or so.

I had to scratch my head a couple of times with Windows 8 having run XP pro for the past several years, but I've encountered no difficulties with it that I couldn't solve with a little experimenting or a quick search.

I'm by no means a techie but was able to transfer all of my documents and music easily with a flash drive.

The speed is everything I'd hoped for and video's play smoothly and reliably.

Very happy with this PC.

Oh, and quiet? This PC is absolutely SILENT.

5A Great Computer
By Jean E. Dvorak
My Dell came with no instructions, but hooking up all the connections was a simple matter. I do have basic computer knowledge, so that did help. Then, I turned on the power and was instantly delighted. Every single device I'd connected worked perfectly from the first minute. This is, apparently, one of the big benefits of an upgrade to the newer Windows operating systems. My old computer was running Windows XP and I was running into problems more and more often.

Windows 8.1, loaded on the new Dell does take some getting used to. Finding files and programs is, at first, a bit daunting. I had to call Microsoft at one point for some help. The tech there was wonderful and told me I was not the only customer who had to call to figure out the new operating system.

All that aside, my Dell is blazing fast at loading Internet sites, my programs, and any apps I may have added. I'm still learning to work in the Windows 8.1 interface, but my computer itself works like a charm. It has plenty of ports to add accessories and a huge hard drive to handle all the files I may need.

This is a great desktop computer at a great price.

4Best of the convertable Windows 8 laptop tablets, 2nd gen model with much improved battery life, highly recommended
By David Pearlman
This is one of a new breed of convertible laptops created to take advantage of the Windows 8 paradigm, which allows use as both as tablet and a laptop. While this category is expected to grow, right now, there are essentially only a modest number of entrants, and only two that could be reasonably be called innovative: The Dell XPS 12 (this one), and the Lenovo Yoga 13. The Dell and Lenovo sport similar power specs (cpu, memory, hard drive, battery life), but the Dell has a much higher resolution, better, screen. In my opinion, the Dell takes that competition handily.

This is actually the second generation of the XPS 12, which replaces the earlier model which was released last year (Dell XPS 12 12.5-Inch Convertible 2-in-1 Touchscreen Ultrabook). The new version is almost identical to the older version in all physical terms, with the primary difference being that it's slightly lighter (about 3 ounces lighter). Under the hood, there is one very significant difference: This new model uses Intel's latest "Haswell" line of processes. These processors are APPRECIABLY more energy efficient than the previous generation processors ("Ivy Bridge") that were used in the previous iteration of the XPS12. This means that run time on a full battery charge has increased from around 5 hours to around 8 hours. (!!!!) That single change--to run time on a full charge--addresses what many considered to be one of the major downsides of the previous generation XPS 12. (Note: The two processor lines, Haswell and Ivy Bridge, are pretty close to indistinguishable in terms of performance, with the Haswell just ever-so-slightly better [PassMark scores of 3380 and 3278 for the Haswell and Ivy Bridge, respectively, with higher being better]).

Now, focusing on the XPS 12 as a total package: This is a terrific piece of hardware, with a lot of pros, and only a few significant cons.

Summarizing,

Pros:

Beautiful super high resolution 1920x1080 12.5" screen
Very high build quality
Terrific innovative screen that rotates in the frame to go from laptop/keyboard to tablet configuration
Very responsive with even the base configuration of an Intel I5 processor and 4Gb memory
Incredibly fast boot time (10-15 seconds)
Very good keyboard
Responsive touchscreen which operates in both laptop and tablet modes
Fast SSD drive in all configurations
Decent webcam (1.3mp)
Light, portable charging cable.
Bluetooth, Wireless N (5 + 2.4Ghz)
Backlit keys on keyboard
Battery life is 8+ hours (New for this version!)

Eh:

Weight is 3.2 pounds, which isn't heavy, but isn't super light for a 12.5" laptop. A bit heavy feeling in tablet mode
Speakers are predictably mediocre for a small laptop
Base configuration has only a 128Gb mSata SSD hard drive. However, the hard drive IS user replaceable.

Cons:

No HDMI or VGA port. Only a graphics mini displayport, which means you will need to carry a mini displayport -> HDMI or VGA adapter if you want to use this for business or with a TV/external monitor.
Memory is soldiered to motherboard and is not upgradeable. Fortunately, even the base configuration 4Gb of memory is more than sufficient.
Only two USB ports (both USB 3.0, however)
Battery is not easily user swapped/replacable
No built in media card reader. If you want to the SD card from your camera, you'll need to carry an external reader.
No GPS
No wired Ethernet port. If you want wired Ethernet, you'll need to buy a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. (You have wireless Ethernet, of course).

Of the cons, the worst, in my opinion, is the fact that the battery is not easily swapped/replaced. While the 8+ hour run time is very respectable, one can expect battery life to diminish over time, and I am not looking forward to dealing with that eventuality. Also, I like to carry a spare battery to swap out for long trips. That's not possible here.

Having struggled with various underpowered Android based tablets, including the Asus TF301/keyboard dock, I can say that using the XPS 12 in tablet mode is like a huge weight has been lifted. The XPS 12 screams when surfing the web, which is something I can't say about any Android (or Mac) tablet I've used--and I've used a lot of them.

People have complained about the lack of apps in the Windows 8 app store--and it's true that the Windows 8 app store is pretty anemic compared to Andoid or Mac. But some of the most important apps are there (Skype, Netflix, etc.) and it's still growing. There are enough to make using the tablet mode acceptable now...and the responsiveness provided by the Intel I5 processor makes it a pleasure to use.

There are a few configuration options available for the XPS 12, all related to the processor (a few speeds of I5 and I7), memory (4Gb or 8Gb) and hard drive size (128Gb or 256Gb or 512Gb). My recommendation: Any of the available processor speeds will be more than acceptable and the difference between the I5 and I7 processors for almost any user will be negligible. Similarly, most users will not need the 8Gb of memory. Windows 8 runs perfectly fine on 4Gb of memory. Unless you plan on running memory hog processes (advanced video editing, certain scientific apps, etc.) you won't need the extra memory. If you do need the extra memory, however, you need to order the laptop with 8Gb installed from the factory, as the memory is not user-upgradeable (it's soldiered to the motherboard...grrr...) A larger hard drive than the 128Gb SSD that comes installed on the base model is definitely a nice feature. But the hard drive IS user replaceable, and the incremental cost of getting the 256Gb mSata SSD from Dell is more than it would be to buy that 256Gb mSata SSD on the aftermarket and clone your 128Gb drive onto it. (You will also wind up with a spare 128Gb drive that way). Unless you are scared of the idea of hard drive cloning/migration, I'd recommend that path. Please note that this laptop uses the mSata configuration hard drive, rather than a full sized SSD to save space. mSata drives tend to be a bit more expensive than standard SSD drives.

Overall, this is a terrific laptop, and buying the least expensive configuration version is, for most, the recommended route. In addition, the newer generation processor used for this updated version of the XPS 12 had addressed one of the major limitations of the earlier version, bumping the battery life to over eight hours.

3Needs a lot of work to be a good untrabook
By Abhishek Ghag
I was waiting for a long time for a good deal on this laptop. Finally amazon offered a steal at $1200 with 256 gb ssd, 8 gb ram and i7 haswell. What attracted me most was the battery life. Then it was the great design of this laptop. For me this was the perfect design for a convertible laptop. Now let me get to the pros and cons of this particular model:

Pros:
1. Screen is a beauty. Its well lit. Even in power saver mode the screen brightness is perfect for daily use.

2. Its fast. I wanted a i5 instead of the i7 processor with the rest of the specs but there was no configuration available with 256 gb ram and i5.

3. Touch sensitivity is good. I heard from lot of reviews that windows 8 without touch is not the best experience. Frankly speaking i seldom use the touchscreen. Also the I have not used this laptop in tablet mode so much.

4. Amazing battery life. Haswell makes a lot of difference. I was afraid I will be getting a hit on battery life with i7. But I am happy to see that the battery life is great. I am getting close to 7-8 hours. I know battery life will vary from user to user but just as an example I watched 3 hours of netflix and 1.5 hours of surfing and I had 56% remaining. I always hated the battery remaining indicator on windows coz it never shows a correct estimate of remaining time and also windows didn't have any way to check how many hours I used. This changed in windows 8. Not the easiest way to find this but running "powercfg /batteryreport" on command line will give you a detailed usage.

5. Keyboard keys are well spaced out and backlit is a good addition.

6. Build quality is great. It feels premium and sturdy.

Cons:
1. Trackpad was horrible. Only after searching online I have finally been able to make this thing workable. I wanted to return this laptop. I was even ready to pay for the restocking fee (amazon doesn't offer a return if the laptop ain't broken). I knew about this when buying and many said that after the latest driver update there trackpad worked fine. It didn't for me. My laptop shipped with the latest drivers. Whenever I scrolled down the page it would auto scroll to top. If scrolling up it would auto scroll to bottom. The gestures are too sensitive. Even when using trackpad for normal use the laptop will switch between apps due to the extra sensitive left gesture. Its a feature in windows 8 where left swipe will do what alt + tab does. Scrolling is frequently unresponsive especially in windows store. Finally after making trackpad pressure to zero things became better. Not great but usuable. Windows store scrolling still has issues.

2. Windows 8 experience is still not great. I have a android phone (HTC one) and nexus 7 tablet. I feel android OS seems much more mature for a tablet experience comparatively. Some how the android os apps seems more user friendly to me than windows 8 in terms of design.

3. Some apps can be annoying. When I installed chrome it worked in windows 8 metro mode. For some reason it decided to switch to desktop mode and now its stuck in desktop mode. There will be a constant switching between desktop apps and windows 8 apps which gets annoying and confusing after some time. The confusing part is when you want to use app switcher all the applications running in desktop mode will be shown as one application called desktop and all windows 8 applications are displayed as individual apps. This is one reason i wanted chrome to switch back to windows mode. I know i can do it by going in options for chrome. The alt + tab does this behavior correctly displaying all individual applications separately.

4. I was a very early user on android. The android apps had one common problem in the beginning. Apps would constantly redirect to website for a few advanced options. This is the behavior I see in multiple apps in windows store. For example amazon app redirects to website if you want to change account settings.

5. Camera is not that great. Grainy when doing video chat.

6. Wifi is unreliable. Since internet is the most important thing in a laptop these days I thought dell would have perfected this. It works 95% of the time. Some times it will simply disconnect which is fine. Other times it shows connected but there won't be internet. I confirmed that my other devices are working when this happens.

Minor issues but no big deals:
1. Hate the fact that there are no dedicated buttons for home and end.

2. Dell bloatware is too much.

3. windows store lacks good apps. But since this is not RT windows 8 its not a big deal.

Don't get me wrong there are lot of good things about this laptop but some of the issues are really annoying. Some issues mentioned here may not be related to the laptop but are related to windows but this review is about my complete experience.

5Great Laptop, Incorrect Specifications
By Wayne Steenburg
This is a great ultrabook/tablet hybrid. The keyboard is permanently attached, so it is best suited for those that primarily want a laptop with the option to use it like a tablet. The screen rotates within its frame allowing the keyboard to be hidden in tablet mode. It ships with Windows 8, but can be easily upgraded to 8.1 for free by visiting the Windows Store. The battery life is exceptional at 7-8 hrs partially due to the 4th generation "Haswell" processor by Intel.

This product is wonderful, however the listing is inaccurate. I purchased this product based on the superior specifications listed on other websites. I was not disappointed. I've listed corrected data bellow:
