Sneaky Brother

So printer ink is expensive but it's required even in this paperless society, but Brother has started to play the same tricks as HP. Once an ink cartridge runs out, printing won't work (at least true on the recent 2011 and newer MFPs). No scanning, no faxing, and no printing (even when not using that color).

If that happens to you, you can "trick" the printer by covering the clear plastic on the print cartridge with colored tape. You can see the area to cover by looking for the float lever in the cartridge (turn it upside down and you'll see it appear and disappear). Put the cartridge back in and the printer will register the ink as full since it thinks the float lever is up and you're good to go.

I suppose if you're going to have to buy ink, getting this 2 pack of the large refills is the best best unless you want to try your luck at the ink refill shops. It worked out as the best price for me.

Great for staying organized

I bought this item to help me reorganize my home filing cabinet and other documents. Having a printed-out label instead of a hand-written one helps a lot more than I thought it would. It's great to be able to print them as I need them, instead of waiting until I have enough to do a batch job through my computer printer.

I chose this labeler instead of others because of the price and ease of use, and I'm happy with my purchase. Even though I only use one style, this labeler has a variety of fonts and styles in case I ever need them. There are also a bunch of pictograms and borders that can be used to decorate the labels.

It doesn't take up much room in a drawer and its desk footprint is pretty small. It's a bit too bulky to carry around on the job, so consider your needs before buying.

The only downsides I've come across are that it uses 6 AAA batteries, which can get expensive. There is an AC adapter available for it, although I think any 9V AC adapter from an electronics store should do the trick - please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Second, when printing labels, there seems to be a lot of extra room in the margins, which is wasteful considering how expensive the tapes can be. I've looked at a lot of labelers and they all seem to have this issue. The workaround I use is to set the margins as small as possible, then set it to "Chain Print" and do as many at the same time as I can.

I bought mine from an office supply store, and I see that it's a bit cheaper to buy it through Amazon. The refill tapes are also a lot cheaper through Amazon. I'm thinking of buying a second one of these for my office.

I hope the people at Brother read this review.

Apparently, they think they have a smart system to sell more tape/ink by leaving a one inch space on both ends of each label. This creates a giant 2 inches of extra space on each label you print. You cannot change the margin to less than 1 inch.

Not only do you have to buy more labels over time, but it makes the label making process time consuming and cumbersome. You have to manually trim each label to get it to fit on a standard file folder or to suit other purposes. When you're in the middle of a project, you'll often need to make a lot of labels. This aspect defeats the purpose of getting a label maker to help you make labels efficiently.

The reality is that this wasteful business strategy is probably not profitable for Brother because I took the thing back to the store and got my money back. Now I won't be buying ANY labels from Brother in the future. There are several other reviewers on this site that did the same.

Plus, these negative reviews are not helping Brother sell label makers to new customers.

I bought a Dymo LabelManager 280 instead and found the margin to be more reasonable.

The other thing that this label maker needs is an included AC adapter. The one they sell costs $20 which almost doubles the label maker's cost. You'll want an AC adapter because putting, "get batteries" on your task list every time you want to use the label maker for a project is also counter-productive. For me, I bought a label maker to increase productivity, not add more hassles.

If Brother would correct these two easy things, this would be a nice label maker.

Uses too much tape

While the printer works fine and is priced right the overuse of tape is inexcusable. Basically it leaves a huge space before the printing and a huge space after - this has 3 effects
1) more than doubles to triples your tape usage which costs more $$$ to use (also lines Mr Brother's pockets)
2) means that you have to go back afterwards with scissors and cut the label so that it is not ridiculously large - this is a big waste of time and means that if you are walking around making labels (as I do) you must carry scissors
3) If you believe that we live in a world of scarce resources, isn't this just plain wasteful?

Good little printer

I'm a techie guy and so maybe I understood what I saw when I assembled my 2140 for the first time. I was delighted that the drum was as easily replaced as the toner unit. EVERY laser printer has a drum but most people don't realize it because the drum is embedded in the machine and you need to disassemble part of the printer to get at it. Brother has made it easier by making the drum an easily replacable item.

My suggestion is to keep using the printer until you see streaking or notice your output not looking as good as it used to. Then replace the drum. The Toner cartridge and the Drum are the only parts that actually print inside the printer. All else is just mechanics to get the paper from one tray, through the toner and drum, and then on to the output tray. Basically replacing these two peices gives you a totally new printer.

I'm super happy witht he output of my printer and the speed at which it works. I usually don't like Brother equipment but this unit may change my mind.

Drum gets about 16000

I got about 16000 on my first drum, and the printer now has 31000 prints and no sign of any wear yet on the 2nd drum, so I count that into my cost per page. I also get about 2800-3100 prints per cartridge, although I do print a lot of envelopes that use only a little toner. This is not a bad way to go, although there are some Xerox printers that are a bit more expensive that would be a better deal overall, still, I am generally happy with the Brother supplies. I tried the generics and they were not good enough for output at the office, although, for example, I would use them for non-critical works such as a classroom.

Drum not always needed with toner

Just a little FYI - You do not have to replace the drum every time you replace the toner cartridge. Just look at the page ratings. TN-330 cartridge: 1500 pages; DR-360 drum: 12000 pages. So it should be about 8 toner replacements per drum. When your printout is streaky is when you need to replace the drum.

Also, Amazon.com is much cheaper for buying toner cartridges than your local (or online) office store.

Be sure to tape the window!

I was really excited to get the Brother HL6180DW Printer - and a big part of that was the availability of this super high yield printer cartridge.

Because we print so much, the initial cartridge that came with the printer only lasted a few days, and then we switched to one of these babies. The print quality is excellent and the installation was easy; although, I will admit I expected it to weigh just a bit more because of the additional toner capacity.

One thing to watch for with these cartridges is that there is a small window that the printer uses to determine when the toner is out. The problem is that you can typically get almost 1000 more pages after the toner passes the level of that window. The easy fix is to add a small piece of tape over the window after the printer thinks it's out of toner. That will give you a chance to pick up a new toner cartridge before it really does run out (which is obvious because the print quality drops off really fast).

Overall, I would highly recommend these toners. It's less hassle because you don't have to change toner as much, and it's also very cost efficient.

Very disappointed - not once but 5 times now

Why oh why did Brother bring out these 12,000 page high capacity cartridges. We bulk print and have used Brother printers and toner for years, and NEVER have had the trouble we have with these. They print about 7000-7500 pages and then litterally spew toner everywhere. I'm not just talking a little leak here, but major toner inside the printer, all over the drum, and burnt into the paper. A terrible mess. We can't blame the printers, because we bought two of them, and they BOTH do the same. We already have toner exchanges from Amazon, and THEY leak at the same point in use. It looks like Brother needs to go back to the drawing board, and figure out the problem. We'll drop down to the 8,000 page toner and hope that they're better. If we get the same problem, then it WILL obviously be the printers that are at fault after all. Finger's crossed though that they're not the problem. We still have and use the Brother HL-5340D's and they continue to work great, as do the TN650 toners. If the new printers are at fault, then we'll have to look around for the discontinued HL-5340D, and use them until Brother sort out the problem. Hope you all have better luck than we have.

Not impressed...but worth the money..

First time trying out this super high yield toner for my 5470 printer. Noticed that this printer must have a page counter built into the software that locks up the printer after so many prints. On my older brother printers I can just tape the laser window and get an extra 2k to 3k prints. This one shuts down the printer after like 5500 prints and even putting tape over the window does not allow to print past that number. Also have seen that this one does leak more than any other cartridges I have used in the past. Ordered 2 more and will see if the next two are just as bad as this first one.

** update 8/1/2013 **
After using these more I will update that I have grown accustomed to these. Maybe I had a bad batch to begin with but so far the new ones seem to be holding up better. Still would like to see a more consistent number of prints from each one considering I only print text documents. But for the price these are the least expensive price per print toner you can get.
