I have read several negative reviews about the Chamberlain CWA2000 Wireless Motion Alert system... many of which compared it to its predecessor. I have used the former version with success for 3 years and I was disappointed that it had been discontinued and replaced with this model and that it was not compatible with my old sensors.
Despite the negative reviews -mostly about the low volume of the base station - I decided to purchase one anyhow because the price is so attractive. I figured I would send it back if I wasn't satisfied. It works fine! The old model allowed the base station to be put on mute for one hour. That feature no longer exists - but the sound can be raised or lowered which helps compensate if someone will be working in one of my remote buildings - tripping the sensor repeatedly - which is when we would use the mute feature. Another new feature that I haven't tested yet is that this new version can handle 8 sensors, each with a unique signal [1 beep - 8 beeps]. Its predecessor could only be trained for 4.
I live in a heavily wooded & hilly location with a very long driveway and several outbuildings that need to be protected. This unit will work for 300-400+ yards dependably. The volume is adjustable and is certainly audible all over my house. The earlier units may have been "fixed" because the base station makes plenty of noise now. I suggest buying several base stations and training them all to the same codes [1 beep for driveway, 2 beeps for shed, 3 beeps for outside the garage, 4 beeps for inside the garage, etc.]. I also strongly recommend that you use lithium batteries for the sensors if they are to be used in a location where the temperature goes below 20degrees F. Alkaline batteries freeze around 15 degrees F; lithium's are good to 20 below zero F. Another trick I use is to put two sensors on my driveway just in case the first one misses. It's my "fail safe". Try these and have some patience in deciding where you will place the sensors. Don't point them towards the sun or prevailing snow storms winds. Use lithium's and expect 10+ months out of each set of AA batteries.

Best investment

I don't normally write reviews, but have to stick up for this product. I bought it along with 2 additional sensors 1 1/2 years ago. It's the best investment I've made in a long time. I've been monitoring my driveway, deck, and basement door. I installed the unit in my master bedroom so it wakes us up if triggered. However, we can easily hear it downstairs as long as we don't have really loud music on. There is one beep for sensor 1, two beeps for sensor 2 and so on. Some people might miss the "one beep" from a very far away or excessive external noise, but I installed my most active sensor (driveway) to be sensor 3 (3 beeps) and never miss hearing it. The 4 AA batteries I originally installed are still working! Yes, it will take 4-5 minutes to open up the units and change them, but you'll only need to do it ever 1-2 years and there protected from weather inside the sensor. I highly recommended if you value knowing when something is on certain parts of your property and don't mind being woken up occasionally if you have deer, cats, or other animals that wander at night. I live in a suburban neighborhood and already caught one person walking up my driveway at 4AM trying to break into our cars. I've also enjoyed hearing the beeps knowing when someone is coming up the driveway during the day.

CWA2000-New Circuit Boards, Finally!

I have owned/installed 7 of these systems at my childrens/my home over the last 15 years, all the way back to the original "Reporter" models.

The original Reporter had circuit boards made in the USA (printed on the boards). They all worked great at far distances. I could easily get a full 1300 feet(unobstructed view)of reception even though they only claimed they were good for 1000'.

About 4-5 years ago Chamberlain company bought Reporter. Unfortunatly this is the same time I had to replace my old/original units (from weather/sun fatigue) of approx 10 years usage. The new units I ordered had the same transmitter (field unit) case cover and a slightly differnt receiver (house unit) cover, but the circuit bords were all made in China (printed right on the boards). These units were terrible. I tested 6 of these transmitters, each with an unobstructed view. The maximum reception I could get was 400' on one and only 150'/200' on all the other transmitters. All new fresh/expensive Li-Ion batteries here too, so no low voltage excuses. Quality control of these circuit boars is the big issue here!!!! So I ended up moving them very close to my house. I have lived with those for several years (not good).

I just received 2 new sets of this new CWA2000 model on 8-24-2012. I tested both systems side by side on the exact same spot I have used for the last 15 years. These work even better than the original Reporter units. Upon inspection I see the units were assembled in Mexico on 7-25-21012 (yes, just 1 month ago!), so they are the latest/freshest you can get. No made in stamp on the boards, just on the outer plastic receiver case. With only a 1 month duration between assembly and delivery, it is very likely these circuit boards are made in the USA or Mexico. If they came from China there would be at least a 3 month delay.

So bottom line, these new units work excellent! I just orderd several more sets for my kids homes (Christmas presents for all).

To Note: New base unit in the house is smaller (nicer than old unit). Buzzer sound has changed. It is now more of a long, high pitched squeal (O.K.) rather than the old loud buzzzzzzzzzz, but plenty of volume to hear anywhere thru my large 3600 sq.ft. single level home. No relay outputs for a relay connection to an external bell or light, but with the Head units being so low in price now, just buy two systems if you want an additional Alarm sound elsewhere in your house/garage/shop. You can program the transmitters to more than 1 Head unit. That is what I did, so I hear when I'm out working in my detached shop.

Changes the way I work with my Ipad Air

I am rating this 5 stars simply because so far everything promised has been realized. The bluetooth works smoothly although it takes some time to get used to it (I am writing this with the keyboard now), the keys are certainly adequate although if someone has very large hands they could be somewhat small for them, the keyboard can be easily removed when desired, and the leather texture is a nice feature. I suppose the only gripe I would make would be the thinness of the cover (compared to the Moko for example which I also have) without the keyboard but then again the case would be thicker and I have not had any experience where it has been a problem--just an observation and a comparison. The only other "issue" is getting used to the back key since I keep hitting the key above it which turns off the screen but it is becoming less of a problem with experience.

The pull out back so the Ipad Air can stand up works great. I am sitting here at Barnes and Nobles drinking coffee typing away and this is quite a nice experience. It may be that Bear Motion has learned from their past issues and put out a great product. In any case, if my opinion changes I will update this review.

iPad Air Case - too soft but keyboard is good so far (Day 1)

3.5 stars. I just received my case today. I was so excited to get it, especially because I plan to use it to take notes in class and the onscreen keyboard doesn't quite cut it when you're trying to quickly take notes. The keyboard itself was incredibly easy to connect and I'm very happy with the feel of it. I'll have to adjust to the size and the placement of a few of the keys but I'm sure it will be a quick transition. I'll have to see how long the keyboard lasts given some of the reviews on this page.

However, the major drawback for me is with the design of the case itself. First of all, it is very flimsy. I wasn't expecting real leather at this price so that doesn't bother me. However, the case is very soft as some reviewers mentioned. It would have benefited from a hard insert of some sort. I don't think I could drop my iPad and expect it to survive the fall, which makes me very nervous. In fact, the $10 temporary case I bought will probably serve me better in that regard.

I still think this was worth the buy only because other keyboards were much more expensive. I only hope it stands the test of time.

Almost 5-Stars!

First, let me give you my typical usage. My iPad Air is almost always in the case. I only attach the keyboard when I am planning on using it (heading to the coffee shop, or otherwise planning to do a lot of writing). When not in use, the keyboard is in my office charging or waiting.

Having said that, let me talk about some negative reviews I have read. I have read a bunch of them and can say that I disagree in almost every case. For instance, 1. my keyboard stays on fine. No, it's not glued in there. It's just a magnet I believe and if I try to make it release, it will release. But in the course of my daily use, I have not had it slip or fall out yet. If I open up the case and shake it, it will fall out. If I am holding it as I always do when carrying my iPad, it's not going anywhere. 2. The kickstand holds my iPad Air up fine. Sure, I can tap the screen a bunch of times and it will eventually tip over, but who is doing that? I open up the case, pull out the kick stand, open up Byword or something, and start typing. The stand works fine for me. 3. It is true that the cut-outs are not perfectly placed. If you need to have your mic or camera centered perfectly, you may have a problem, but not a single thing is even partially obstructed in my case and I'm happy (which is saying something because I am a bit OCD). Now on to more positive things.

- I love the look of the case. The black leather (or whatever it is) with the brown or orange stitching looks great, imo. It smells good too!
- There is a secure flap with velcro holding the device in place and it does the job. How well you place the iPad will obviously determine how well the cut-outs are placed, too.
- The keyboard is at least as good as any other I have used (about five or six) and is my favorite so far. It is sturdy with a good throw and tactile feedback. Of course, that's a personal preference thing.

Basically, I am more than satisfied except for one thing: the top-right key is a lock icon which is used to lock the iPad. Used with the function key, it does the delete function. Below this lock key, and significantly narrower, is the backspace key. Now, if you are used to typing on the iPad or any number of other keyboards, you may expect to find the backspace key in the upper right corner. This is exactly what I expect. This means that every time I naturally try to backspace, I end up turning off my iPad! This is very annoying.

I wish that, at the very least, they would have made the lock work in conjunction with the Function key so that accidental presses merely tried to delete rather than turn the whole thing off. If that were the case, I'd give it five stars without reservation. The good news is that if you just press the lock again, it turns the iPad back on and you're right back where you were. Could be worse.

***** Make a new one with the backspace/function+lock key on the top right and the Delete key beneath that and I will buy another one and tell everyone I can to get one too.

So, if anyone knows of a way to reprogram that key, please let me know! Either way, you will have to decide whether that's a deal breaker for you. I will just keep practicing and hopefully get used to it. We'll see.

Good Frame But You Need To Know....

I'm happy with the physical hardware of the frame but the operation can become very clunky depending on what type of pictures you load onto it. Certain files will render the frame almost useless. I found Nix tech support very responsive, but was left wondering why they did not include the information they provided me in the owner's manual (and thus, my 4-stars). Here's what you need to know. Each size frame has an optimum resolution and "DPI", and your pictures should be sized / re-sized in accordance with it. The 15" frame's resolution is 1280 x 800, with a DPI of 72. Tech support told me that a DPI of 300 for example, will cause the frame to "stop, freeze, pixelate, or skip the photo altogether". Additionally, all photos have to meet certain naming criteria. The re-sizing and re-naming can be accomplished easily with certain programs such as 'FastStone Photo Resizer' (which is free). Here are two excellent links describing the process you need to follow. Once I did this, my frame started working great.

Good for the $

Frame works as described by other reviewers. Software is definitely clunky but workable. Note that you need to scroll down (arrow key) to get to the second menu page to set screen brightness, motion detector, etc. Resolution/clarity is OK on the 15" screen, but this is no Apple Retina Display (nor does it cost as much). Viewing angle is fairly tight, so this is probably not the "monitor" to use for a large room.

Plays JPEGs nicely, but video is lousy.

Don't buy this if you want to play video, but the still image display is satisfactory. The description of this item says the display is 1024x768 and it plays MPEG-4 and AVI video. It won't play MPEG-4 video though. Their website support makes statements that basically say the variation of video formats is quite a problem and don't be surprised if you get lousy results. They recommend a video converter program called "Any Video Converter," and their instructions tell you to convert your video with this software to AVI format at 720x576 only. Their statement is "THESE ARE THE ONLY SETTINGS YOU CAN USE FOR THIS FRAME." An AVI file at 720x576 produces pixelated video that is very poor quality. Also on their website they mention that it will also play MPEG2 and MPEG-2 video. I tried these two formats and the results were even worse than the AVI.

Surprisingly Awesome, Amazing Picture.

First let me say I am a tech nut and have a good eye for flaws in technology products. Upon booting this up with an SD card inserted, it immediately starts playing my pictures. So even if you're an idiot, using this should not be difficult, at all.

The screen is VERY high quality for a photo frame. Colors are vivid and the viewing angle is VERY good. You will notice almost no degradation in the image at any left or right angle, or from the top. The only time the image degrades is if you look at it from below - almost every photo frame I've seen does this though. Make sure the frame sits at or below whatever level people will be at when they look at it and you're fine.

Another note, when I received the frame, photos were sharp but dull. I turned the Saturation setting all the way up and now photos have perfect color (not oversaturated, the way they should look). So be aware of this if colors look a bit dull upon first use. I didn't need to change any other settings.

Of note too is that this frame does a phenomenal job of shrinking down large photos to fit the frame. It uses 'bicubic sharper' reduction so the images retain incredible sharpness when reduced in size by the frame to fit the screen.

The motion sensor works perfectly. No false alarms and no having it turn off when I'm sitting right in front of it.

Having used Sony and a host of others in the past, they aren't even close. I highly recommend this frame.

EDIT: It came across my attention that NIX is asking people who buy this to rate it 5 stars on Amazon for a chance to win something. Mine did not come with this card asking for a review nor was I asked to or paid to post this review. I posted it simply because the frame is very nice.

Also some people mentioned the transitions on this frame are bad. I don't use them so I have no idea. I'm more concerned with the photos than some effect to change the photo. Buying a photo frame because you like the transitions is like buying a car because you like the sound it makes when you put the key in.

"ok" digital frame, but they game dumb Amazon.com customers

Cheap frame, almost all of the transition effects look like a 486 dx2 66mhz PC trying to run Crysis at 1080p.

You have to display this in landscape, horizontal has a viewing angle of "stand still and stare right at it, not even a degree off".

Oh, and the final thing, the first thing that pops out of the box, is a large printed card that says, "if you rate us 5 stars on Amazon, email us your review on Amazon.com and you may win another free picture frame!"

So, take every single review here with a grain of salt. The frame works, sort of, but all of these reviews are biased due to this cheating system they've implemented. They get 2 stars for being clever with marketing. Don't sell yourself out for a poor product, it isn't worth it.

Great! Very easy to use

Purchased this for my father for his birthday. Incredibly simple to use!

1. Adjust the settings(time, motion sensor, brightness, etc)

2. Fill SD card with pictures(I haven't yet used it for videos)

3. Place it somewhere with a power outlet.

That's it! You don't need to do anything else! The motion sensor is great, the frame automatically turns itself on when it senses something moving in front of it. You definitely can't go wrong with this, especially at this price!

They do include a remote to control the settings and things from a distance, though personally I don't have a need for it.
