1LifeProof Warranty is Outrageous
By James Wynne
I purchased this product for my iPad about a year ago and love it. In fact I loved it so much I bought one for my iPhone as well as the wife's iPhone. A couple of months ago, I purchased another LifeProof case for my wife's iPad...though a different color of course. I recently (about a week ago) surprised her with it and so this weekend (8/10/13) she decides to put it all together. However, when she ran the leak test the unit failed. So we pulled the gaskets out cleaned them off with a damp rag, re-inserted them and tested again and again...but the lead test continues to fail. I even pulled my LifeProof apart and used its gasket for a test...but it still failed. I am now looking to just get a replacement but since it has been greater than 30 days since I ordered it, we are out of luck. Really?? I paid $150 for this and only get a 30 day warranty from the manufacturer and Amazon as well? This is a brand new item removed from the box and I get nothing for it since I didn't open it right away. For a company, LifeProof, that touts their product as being the best on the market for what it does, they certainly don't have much faith in its longevity.
This really is a great product and would well deserve a five star rating, however be warned that if you are purchasing this product...test it out as soon as you get it...for if you don't and it fails the leak test past the 30 days of purchase...it will be you who just took the bath.

1one fall, one shatter, no coverage from LifeProof
By kathleen wallace
I am astounded by the horrific experience I have just had with my iPad LifeProof case. I am a teacher and have been using my iPad for my job which requires me to travel through junior high hallways each passing period. I figured I'd better get the best case possible since I would likely drop the iPad at some point in the school year. I bought the LifeProof case, thinking it would protect my iPad. I have used the case for exactly 2 weeks and have not dropped it a single time. Last night my son dropped my ipad from his hands, it fell on a tile floor, and the entire screen shattered into hundreds of tiny shards. I was ASTOUNDED. It was as if there had been no case at all. Are you kidding me? I guess the "proof" is in the puddin' - or the shards, as the case may be. This morning, I called LifeProof and spoke to an actual human being who told me that they warranty the case itself. So, if the case had cracked into shards, they will warranty the case but the item inside gets no coverage whatsoever. This case has literally dropped one single time and my iPad is utterly ruined; the case did not protect it in the smallest way. Despite the video they have imbedded in their website, where people are dropping it on the side walk and it's getting whipped off a taxi, this will NOT protect your electronic device when you really need it to. I will return the case because it's been less than 30 days and I will never buy this ridiculously expensive, useless product again. Be ye warned!!!! - LifeProof neither protects nor replaces your electronics - and watch your eyes, my son now has an irritation in his eye from the spray of glass dust.

1A bit annoying ...
By T. Wynia
ONLY buy this if you MUST have a fully water/dust proof case !!! Its a great product for what it really is and really admire the o-ring design but this is not for the very large majority of people. I use my iPad for GPS in an open off road vehicle in heavy dust and rain so perfect for me but gave it a low review as this product is pushed heavily to the mainstream users when it should not be:

- Speaker is muffled and at least 25% less sound and loose some serious fidelity
- The Nuud idea of no screen protector is a cool thought but I really think all of us want some screen protection especially at this price point and cost of an iPad. Atleast it does come with the snap on face cover but its really only practical for storage in my opinion. Weird that when removed it wont snap ontot he backside of the case so its an extra loose item to carry around. It also has a built in kickstand and thus doubles as a stand so that is nice but still not well thought out as only good for landscape orientation. Expect a lot more at this price point in general.
- Only OEM charger will fit ... had to buy adapters for all my chargers and most don't fit and need to be modified
- The door design for charger makes it a little tricky (you get use to it) to insert the charger
- My headphones wont plug in by simply removing the waterproof plug (which is a bit annoying in general). have to use the adapter to make contact properly so its another thing dangling off the case which is annoying.
- Very bulky but good quality
- SUPER Expensive ... throw in a good NUUD screen protector film custom cut (Zagg) to maintain waterproof and getting way up as cant use a standard film screen protector

Was hoping I could tolerate this case to still use it for work also when I don't need waterproof and tried to get use to it but I am going to a standard cover/case for normal use. Really surprised how many of these have sold and are pushed heavily in the big box stores too ... it should be a niche only product.

5Awesome!!!!!!!
By Kenny Arnone
I purchased this case from Lifeproof directly because I was on a list to recieve 1 of the first ones sold> The case works perfectly! I will tell you though the there are a few things you need to pay attention to **BEFORE** you install the case.

1) MAKE SURE all of your fingerprint coding is done PRIOR to installation of the case
2) DO NOT SKIP THE WATER TEST !!!!!! There is a membrane barrier over the touch ID button and if it is compromised in ANY way , you need to know before installation
3) After you do the water test, and install the case on your phone be ***VERY, VERY CAREFULL*** when removing the touch sensor overlay. Make sure you push the membrane over the touch button (you will see what I am talking about when you get the case). After you smooth it out on the button, DO NOT pull accessively on it, but remove it slowly and smoothly or you will stretch out the membrane film. I had 2 of these and bought one for my buddy , he installed his a little impatiently and pulled it off too quick and the membrane pulled up along with the adhesive and would not re-seat properly........ lesson learned!

As for the case itself, I LOVE IT!! It works perfectly and is very consistent . You have to know that you should not use it gently (meaning do not just rest your finger for the touch ID lightly as this may not allow the scan), you can put normal pressur on it and you should. Everything else about this case work just as any other Lifeproof case. I have just ordered 2 more(1 for my wife phone and 1 for my cousin, both in White/Gray)

I am a stickler for detail and can honestly say I look for "everything "that could be an issue. I can say with all honesty that this is an excellent case and another Plus for Lifeproof. The only con is that it only comes in 2 colors right now but I am sure that will be changing shortly. And I think if you really wanted another color , you can use an Iphone 5 back because they are the same.

Hope this helps anyone who is not sure how well it works!!!

4Excellent Protection but a few quirks
By John
I bought this case as soon as it came it. I am one of those people who like to drop their phone and try to catch it with their foot, but wind up punting it across the room instead. Hence, I needed a case that provides a lot of protection. Most of friends raved about Lifeproof and I felt like I'd give it a try. Right out of the box I felt a bit ripped off because the front cover felt very flimsy without a phone inside of it. I decided that I spent the money so I would persevere. The "test" of the case to verify it is waterproof was actually really cool and my case passed on the first try. I dried it off and slapped my phone inside. This was 3 months ago. Having used this case I must say that it does a fabulous job with protection and the "flimsy" front that I originally worried about is all part of the design to make sure you do not lose any functionality with the touch screen. My phone has been dropped on the ground/table/deck, in puddles, the ocean, and God knows how many other places without any damage to my phone. Flawless protection. Audio quality is great with no notable distortion of sound quality while the case is on and using either the internal microphone speaker with the phone or the speakerphone setting. Same goes for music distortion. Buttons work well through the case but be aware the "silent" mode switch is inverted. The fit for the power/transfer cable is tight with aftermarket units but I didn't have a problem with the OEM Apple cable. There is much to love and little to hate about this case but, no review is complete without a few caveats on the frustrations created with this items use. I have only three things that bother me with this case:

1) The waterproof feature also makes it air proof and when sealing/closing the case, an air bubble can form in the home button recess causing the fingerprint scanner to not function. This is fixed by pressing your thumb into the recess while closing the case.
2) Finger Print Scanner frustrations. This ties in with the first one a bit, but you really have to make sure your fingerprints entered into your iPhone 5S are of your entire finger. I have entered my finger prints 3x and have got a good read now. I wound up intentionally placing my finger/thumb on the scanner from left to right to front to back over and over until it accepted the scan and using this method (versus the standard hold phone and place finger/thumb on scanner in basically the same manner repeatedly).
3) Headphone jack - If you do not have the standard iPhone earbuds or use the included audio jack adapter provided with the case you will struggle when trying to use the headphone jack. I use my phone to listen to music and podcasts during my work commute every morning and had to place the audio jack adapter in my car to allow me to hook it up to my car stereo. This is only an annoyance because of how often I have to screw in the adapter. If you don't use your phone like I do (or use the Apple earbuds) you won't ever notice.

Overall I'd recommend this case to anyone looking for a great means to protect your iPhone 5S. If you can address/live with the items that bug me you won't have any other complaints.

1Dont buy this from Amazon if you want the Total Water Protection Plan Warranty!
By Mermaid
I am so disappointed in Amazon on this. This rating is due to the fact that Lifeproof will NOT warranty your phone if you purchase this case from Amazon. Only Lifeproof themselves or Verizon can sell the case with the (for the extra $10) Total Water Protection Plan warranty . Although Lifeproof lets you think you can just pay the $10 for this plan on their website, when you try to buy it, it automatically adds the case to your cart. Amazon dropped the ball on this and Lifeproof should not allow Amazon to sell, if we the consumer cannot buy the protection plan. Who cares that only the case has a warranty! Its the $ 800 phone I am trying to protect! I hope Amazon puts a disclaimer on their site, so people understand just exactly what they are buying, or NOT buying when they order this case.

5Lifeproof nuud 5s / fre / Incipio Atlas ID comparison
By Dennis E Chung
I used a LifeProof fre case on my iPhone 4s for 2 years, then switched to an Incipio Atlas ID when I upgraded to the 5s. I have settled on the nuud for my 5s; it suits my needs best, which may differ from yours.

I had issues with Newton's rings on the screen of my 4s with the fre, the rainbow effect where the wavy screen protector comes into contact with the screen. Also the rubber corners of the front half wore through and required warranty replacement after one year. The same thing happened after the second year but the case was out of warranty. I also ruined one phone when water leaked in while swimming and had to foot the bill for a replacement phone. Finally the charging port hinged cover cracked, but was still useable so I lived with it.

The Atlas ID is a solid case, but the glass screen protector made the touch screen much less sensitive and required hard presses. Incipio replaced the case and the second one was better, but still far from responsive. The Atlas ID does accept most standard headphone jacks without their included waterproof pigtail. I also had more comments that I was hard to hear when placing calls.

I have had no complaints about call clarity with the nuud, and I can hear callers well. The speaker seems to work better than the fre, but I rarely use it anyway.

All the cases have similarly responsive volume, power, and slide switch covers. The most difficult to actuate is the slide switch, and the Atlas ID has a small advantage but negligible.

The nuud has no built-in screen protector which is their selling point. They do include a stick-on protector to be applied after the case is installed, but it is far from ideal. It is cut too small - approx. 1/16" both ways so that the edge is clearly visible and creates an unsightly gap between its edge and the case gasket. I installed then removed it. Instead I used a MediaDevil full screen protector under the case and have had no issues. The MediaDevil is relatively thin; a thicker protector may cause issues with closing/sealing the case. The case is a bit harder to snap shut but seems to seal just as well. What I like best is that the screen is just as responsive as a bare phone, and just as clear.

Both the nuud and Atlas ID allow use of the fingerprint scanner, but neither work as well as the bare phone. Both cases have a recess for the home button and make it feel like you are sticking your thumb down into a hole. Thus you cannot use the pad of your thumb, just the tip. I have to try a couple times to get it to work, rarely does either work on the first try. The Atlas ID uses a fancy convex membrane over the home button while the nuud has a clear flexible plastic (vinyl?) film. I would not recommend using a fingernail to press the home button for fear of tearing the film. The film is somewhat tacky and when you press the home button you can hear it releasing at the edges. Also the clear film looks like a poorly applied screen protector with small bubbles and voids over the home button. I tried several times to remedy this to no avail.

The same film is used over the camera flash, but the lens is covered with glass as is the front-facing lens. Not sure why they didn't cover the flash with glass as in the fre. (EDIT: Upon further thought I think the flexible film over the flash acts as a pressure reducing diaphragm. For instance if you went from a hot tub into a cool pool, the resulting temperature/pressure differential would create a situation where water might get sucked into the case. Instead the film will flex and relieve pressure on the seals by allowing a small change in the interior volume. The home button cover won't do this since it is supported by the button whereas the flash cover has air space below it.)

The nuud is a more solid case than the fre as the case needs to be strong enough to apply constant pressure to the screen gasket. The nuud also has a rubber surround on the front half like the fre, but it is thicker and does not seem integral to sealing as in the fre so I am less concerned about it wearing.

All the cases are relatively slim - much less bulky than an OtterBox Defender. Both the nuud and fre have front rubber edges but still slide in and out of my pocket easily. The Altas ID has plastic edges and is the most slick.

Both the fre and nuud have the same headphone port sealing plug, but the nuud has a tether to keep it attached. Almost all headphones will require the use of the pigtail. This is one clear advantage of the Atlas ID which accepted all my headphones without the pigtail. The Atlas ID has a tethered rubber plug that sandwiches between the case and opening bottom cover to seal the port.

Regarding water resistance, I would trust the Atlas ID over both Lifeproofs. Incipio will stand behind water damage and warranty your phone as well as the case, Lifeproof will not. (This may only apply to cases bought direct from Incipio, you should verify if you want to rely on the warranty.) Not only that, I have previous unfortunate experience with the fre, and the nuud already comes with a 2 X 3.5" hole in it.

When I received my nuud, I noticed a tiny shaving of curled plastic stuck in the gasket. Had I not removed it, it would have been lodged between the glass and gasket and certainly impaired the seal. The gasket is silicone and does attract dust.

But I do not plan on submerging my phone for any duration. I mainly like the waterproof cases for keeping dust out of the ports and for being able to take them into the shower and wash them daily. For this I trust the nuud is dunkable and have not noticed any water ingress.

I don't use my headphone jack much so I can live with the pigtail requirement. When I do listen to music I reach for my bluetooth phones which don't sound as good but avoid the issue of the pigtail.

So for my needs the nuud suits me best and thus the 5 stars. The screen sensitivity is as stock which is important to me. But if you use the headphone port daily or require a waterproof case that guarantees your phone, you might be happier with the Atlas ID. Just be advised the glass screen protector will require harder presses which hampers texting.

If you don't need a waterproof/dustproof case, don't get one. They all have compromises, but fortunately the nuud has ones I can live with.

3Good protection, not terribly convenient
By James Tyler Dancy
I purchased this for an iPhone 5 after having previously used the "Fre" version that covers the actual screen. This one fits well and it is nice having the tactile touch of the actual screen. And while the case is less bulkly than the alternative Lifeproof it still feels slightly "clumsy". For example, swiping up from the bottom of the screen (using iOS 7), the perimeter of the case that outlines the screen gets in the way. You have to very carefully touch as far down as you can in order to do a swipe that the phone recognizes to pull up the shortcut menu. Is this a dealbreaker for a durable case? No, but it can be very annoying after you've tried several times to get it right. Another thing that I do not like it having to use the adaptor for the headphone jack. I get it, you have to keep the headphone jack sealed when not in use to avoid dirt/water getting in. But if I am somewhere and want to use the headphone jack and forgot my adaptor what are my options? Oh, just take the case off the phone so you can plug in the headphone jack.

Pros:
- Relatively lightweight/non-bulky case that offers good protection
- Ability to touch the actual screen is nice
- Good build quality
- Headphone screw thingie is tethered to case, unlike "Fre" model - No worries about losing it
- Aesthetics. Nice looking case

Cons:
- Difficult to access perimeter of screen due to design of the case
- Forgot your headphone adaptor? Open the case to access the jack
- Difficult to open the charging port cover
- Will not accept 3rd party chargers - they are too wide to fit in the enclosed area
- Using front camera (selfies, FaceTime, etc.) has a mild haze and the protective part of case covers the front camera

2Great Case but NO Warrenty
By Jeff
I've read many reviews about how great the case is but that Lifeproof will not honor the warranty. I called them (1-888-533-0735) and verified that this is true. Even though this is purchased from a Lifeproof Amazon Store and the case even has a serial number on it, Life proof will not honor cases sold on Amazon (or Ebay). They will honor stores that they ship directly to such as AT&T, Verizon, Walmart, Bestbuy.
I give it 5 starts for the case itself but dropping it down to 2 because of they won't replace a defective case bought through Amazon.
