Better than expected!

Fits like a glove, doesn't obstruct any functions. Adds a nice grip and bulk to a thin small phone. Inner lining is nice and smooth not like most two layer cases that I've seen which are almost tacky and create an anti skid feeling. This case is nice and smooth. Better than expected :) ordered on a Sunday and got it on Wednesday so shipping was great too.

Lots of positives, few negatives

Compared to the iPhone 4S version of this case this is a complete redesign. Part of that was required because of the new dimension, port locations and size of the iPhone 5, but other parts seem to be a genuine attempt at improvements.

Positives
--Feels very well protected.
--Newer rubber material is more plasticky than previous versions. Better feel, nicer fit and seems less likely to stretch over time. Also doesn't catch when going into the pocket.

Neutral
--Edge on the front glass is significant. This doesn't encumber my typing but I am aware of it. Of course, this is part of the protection of this case and is a fair trade-off in my opinion.
--General thickness. Definitely distracts from the beauty of an iPhone 5. This is not a flaw in the product, though, just a decisions making point for the consumer. That thickness is, once again, a trade-off for protection.

Negatives
--Power button has a ton of resistance while in this case. Not sure if this will break in with time or not.

Having said all of that I recommend this case whole-heartedly if you're looking for a good amount of protection and you're willing to trade some sleekness for it. For me it seems like a significant step up in materials and fit and finish quality over the previous versions.

Offers great protection!

I am not going to write a complete review, but I have to chime in on an 'issue' people are commenting on regarding this case.

No, this case is not sleek, it's a !@$*& otter box. If you bought this case, or are considering buying this case, it's because you want to protect your phone and prevent any damage from occurring. This phone is perfect for that purpose.

It may not still be as small as just the phone in your pocket, but who expects that when they buy an otter box? This case protects my phone great. It has a silicone insert which you put your phone into first, and then you put it into the hard, outer shell. This case even comes with a screen protector. Well worth the money in my opinion.

And on another note, the power button is not as hard to press as people make it sound, and I am sure it will get easier to press the longer you own the case.

The only thing I might say could be improved upon would be to put rubber on the bottom side of the case (perhaps a rubber bumper in each corner) to prevent it from sliding around. I have noticed when I toss the phone on my desk, it slides quite a bit. Perhaps my desk is just clean, but that's the only thing I could nit pick about this wonderful case.

Solid protection, moderately slim and lightweight

Bottom line: The Otterbox Commuter case is great protection for your iPhone 5 investment. And it's sleeker and lighter than the negative reviews might lead you to believe.

My highest priority was to protect this $400 gadget from damage. I also have preschoolers who are additional risks to anything fragile! Check.

At the same time, I wanted something with good design that would fit unobtrusively in my pants or shirt pocket. Check and check.

Also wanted materials that are durable. Time will tell, but my initial analysis indicates check.

FYI, I compared to the Otterbox Defender, which offers more protection, but is bulkier and more noticeable in my pocket. Also compared it to several different Speck cases, which appeared to offer similar protection at the same price, but did not come with a screen protector. Plus, the Otterbox color combinations, from black/white to lime green/navy, accommodate a range of tastes.

The criticisms in other reviews appear overblown. Regarding on/off switch stiffness, this isn't a factor at all. The case fits the phone perfectly. I didn't notice the "rough" edges on the bottom back because I don't hold it there.

In my four years of owning iPhones, iPads and cases, my experience is that no case is "perfect." If you want solid protection without too much bulk, this case is worth your consideration.

Very disappointing

I've had Mophie Juice Packs for my iPhones 3 and 4 and they were awesome products. So I didn't even think about buying any other brand when the 5 came out. I love the battery life and I actually like the feel of the iPhone 5 with the Mophie better than without. It just seems to fit my hand better and it also adds some grip.
Then reason I'm giving it 2 stars is their implementation of the USB connection. On the past two models for iPhones 3 and 4, the USB connector was a complete passthrough device. You plug it in where iPhones go and it just works. Unfortunately with the 5 they don't pass through the connection. I opened a support case about it and Mophie said that the pass through was not necessary since the 5 will sync wirelessly. That is indeed the case, however now when I plug my phone into my iPhone connection in my car it no longer sees the phone. So I have to remove the Mophie every time I want to use my phone as an audio source in the car. I don't think that their engineers through through the implementation properly. In my case this is critical flaw worthy of the 2 star rating.
So I'll just buy another iPhone case and keep the Mophie in the drawer until I have a specific need, such as a long flight.

And update to this review. On top of the connector issue, the power switch is poorly designed. It tends to get switched on when you carry it around in your pocket. So I'm changing my review to 1 star. No more Mophie for me.

Ripped off

I bought this for work and it stopped charging after the 30 days return with Amazon, so I followed up with Mophie. Mophie sent the it back to me saying it is counterfeit. The company that sold it on Amazon (Case Space)does not reply to my emails that I have to post through Amazon. Case Space are apparently criminals and Amazon dropped the ball.

Very convenient, fits great, cards are accessible, but button cover too stiff

I bought this case when I purchased my iPhone 5 as I had a card carrier case from Casemate for my iPhone 4 that I really liked, but it was a bit hard to get the cards out. After using this for a couple weeks, here are my thoughts:

The Good:
- Case fits snugly but can be taken on and off relatively easily due to the flex design.
- Case has a nice bezel around the display so that it does protect the class when set face down.
- Cards slide in pretty easily (much more than my previous case)
- Cards have not slipped out yet and seem to stay secure
- I can put in my drivers license, ATM card, and cash in together which is VERY convenient

The Bad:
- The button covers are very stiff so pushing the top button or volume buttons, you really have to push down hard. If not for that, it would be 5 stars.

Overall: Very good and recommended!

Not as good as the CandyShell Card

I had the CandyShell Card case for my iPhone 4 and I liked it much better. I'm still going to hold onto this case because I really like the wallet feature, but I wish they made a CandyShell Card for the iPhone 5.

Why did I like my old case better? The SmartFlex doesn't fit as snugly. I feel like the front screen isn't as well protected because the phone slips slightly in the case so the screen isn't protected behind the raised bezel. I know that seems like a minor thing, but it just doesn't seem like it protects my phone as well, and isn't that the point of a case?

Also, the power button doesn't work as well in this case. I feel like I have to push it harder and it doesn't "click."

On the plus side, though, it seems slimmer than the CandyShell Card. (Maybe that's just because the iPhone 5 itself is slimmer; I'm not sure.) My husband likes this because it is easier to keep in his pocket. I prefer the bulkier CandyShell Card because I feel like it protects my phone better.

And of course it is very convenient to hold 3 cards in my phone.

I also wish there were more color options. I'm not really a fan of any of them. It would be nice to have a classy burgundy, chocolate, or other "jewel tone" colors like navy blue, plum, deep teal, etc. I'd like something more professional-looking.

NOTE: The "Pomodoro" color is just red. The picture makes it look a little muted, but it is a bright red.

UPDATE--3 MONTHS LATER: I recommend getting the black. I got gray and it is showing stains on it. In some places it looks like the material has picked up dye from my jeans and in some places it looks like the finish has worn off. I'm not rough on my phones by any means, so this is disappointing that the case looks dirty. It's not major--definitely still usable without being gross or anything--but I would certainly be worried about getting one of the lighter colors!

Awesome case

I had an otterbox commuter series case, and I was not happy because it made the iPhone 5 heavy and bulky, not so with this case, I can fit my work ID, driver license and debit card with no issues, the case had a perfect fit and did not add too much to the size or weight of the phone. The camera and flash are not even close to being obstructed which was important to me. Also you don't have to worry about having to fidget with getting your cards, ID, etc out since you can push them out from the other side which makes access to them a breeze. The two cons people might have an issue with is that the bottom headphone jack and charging port are not covered like they are with an otterbox, I found this a convenience but some might object. Also there is no muffle to the speakers as they have little holes to let the sound out which the otterbox did not have. Overall very satisfied and will be ordering one for my daughter as well.

Apple iPhone 4S, Does it Live up to the Hype?

I entered the smartphone world back in 2008 staring with the Apple iPhone 3G. Coming over from my old Sprint flip-phone, the iPhone 3G was a major upgrade and blew my mind with how much it could do. It was amazing that cell phones had advanced into a sort of mini-PC.

Fast forward to the present-day and I have now used and experimented with various smartphones, different cellphone companies, and smartphones OS's (iOS, Android, Windows, etc). I also run my own small cell phone shop and get to play with these devices on a daily basis. Back in the iPhone 3G days, there were only a few smartphone options to choose from. Today there are literally hundreds of devices across several carriers. All with different functions and designs. I'm going to cover how the iPhone 4S stacks up to the competition, what the competition is, what the 4S can do, and what improvements it makes over its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

HARDWARE
The iPhone 4S is almost identical in hardware design to the iPhone 4. It features the same rectangular shape with the flat gorilla glass back and front screen. The front and rear camera are in the same position. The only visible difference on the outside of the phone is that the volume controls are slightly moved on the 4S. The real difference in the hardware is on the inside. The iPhone 4S uses a dual-core "A5" processor. This makes it significantly faster than the iPhone 4. The processor is the raw power that apps need in order to operate fast and fluidly without slowdown or hiccups. With basic use, users probably won't notice much difference from the iPhone 4's speed. The extra power boost mainly shows its worth when playing some of the more high-end iOS games and apps.

CAMERA
In addition to the new processor, the iPhone 4S has an improved 8 megapixel camera. It also now has the ability to capture full 1080p HD Video. Unless you're a professional photographer, you will be blown away with how great the 4S is at taking pictures. It is on par with most of the dedicated point-and-shoot cameras that are currently on the market. Images are clear, crisp, and very colorful. I even sold my 10MP Canon point-and-shoot after using the 4S for a few weeks. When comparing pictures taken with the iPhone 4 side by side to the 4S, the difference is like night and day. As for the 1080P videos, they're also very beautiful. Just like the photos, the videos rival dedicated point-and-shoot devices and look absolutely gorgeous on the iPhone's retina display screen. The only drawback to these 1080p videos is that they can take up large amounts of memory. So if you plan on shooting a large amount of video, you may need to consider getting the 32GB or 64GB iPhone 4S.

SIGNAL RECEPTION AND DATA SPEEDS
The iPhone 4S has been expanded to include a 3rd US carrier Sprint. This brings your total choices to Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint.
Signal reception and data speeds will vary by carrier and location, so I'll give you some basic information about what to expect on average. Signal reception is greatly improved compared to the iPhone 4. The antenna problem from the iPhone 4 has been removed and the 4S uses separate antennas for incoming and outgoing calls in order to increase overall reception. AT&T is a GSM carrier while Sprint and Verizon are CDMA carriers. Verizon has the overall largest and most expansive voice coverage of the three, closely followed by AT&T, with Sprint in third. The 4S Data speeds will largely vary by carrier and location. Being a GSM carrier, AT&T is the only iPhone carrier capable of using the 4S's improved HSPA+ data speeds. AT&T users will notice their iPhones showing "4G" in the top left corner rather than 3G. Though this is faster than standard 3G, do not confuse it with the much faster 4G LTE network. The iPhone 4S is not yet capable of using that network. Verizon is second in 3G data speeds, with Sprint bringing up the rear. Again, these are average speeds from across the nation. Individual results may vary depending on your location. It is also important to note that Sprint is the only carrier that still offers unlimited data. This may be an important factor in choosing a carrier for some.

BATTERY LIFE
iPhone owners have come to expect excellent battery life from their devices. Previous iPhones have ranked among the most impressive in terms of battery life compared to rival Android devices. In the past each new iteration of the iPhone had better battery life than the previous device. With the 4S however, the overall battery life is about the same as the iPhone 4. Apple claims this is mainly because of the dual-core processor used by the 4S as well as the more demanding iOS 5 software that is included with the iPhone 4S. Due to this, there were some widespread complaints about the iPhone 4S battery life initially. Apple has since addressed the issue with their iOS 5.1 update. The iPhone 4S now ranks among the top smartphones in overall battery life. I can easily get through a full day on one full charge of average use.

SOFTWARE
Usually when comparing the iPhone to other phones, it comes down to the software. There is a big ongoing debate among techies between the iPhone's operating system "iOS" and Google's "Android" operating system. It's comparable to the famous PC vs Mac debate. Rather than type a whole page comparing the two, I'll just cover a few basics. The main difference between the two is choice. Customize or not customize. iOS is more fluid and crisp out of the box. All iPhones/iPods/iPads use this standard OS. Less powerful iOS devices are often able to move as fast or faster than more powerful Android counterparts. However, major modifications and customizations of Apple's iOS are not possible. The standard 4x4 row of icons is what you will get. Android offers tons of customization options. This is great for advanced tech users, but can be overwhelming to novice smartphone users or those not really interested in editing and customizing a lot to get the device to do what they need it to do. I usually recommend iOS to customers new to smartphones due to its more simple and easy to use interface. If you like customizing and making your the software on your phone look different from everyone else, I recommend an Android device.
The other major software difference between iOS and Android is the Apps. The Apple app store still has by far the most support and overall apps from developers. Most developers create an app for the iPhone first and port it later on to Android, or sometimes not at all. From personal experiences with both, I can say that many times the iPhone version of an app usually runs better or has more features.

SIRI Personal Assistant
Unless you've been under a rock for the past few months, you've heard of the iPhone 4S's SIRI personal assistant software. Apple touts it as a feature that allows you to speak voice commands to your iPhone and SIRI will do whatever you ask it to do. Well it can do some things, but not quite everything. SIRI is great for finding places for you. You can say simple things like "I'm hungry" and SIRI will open the Maps App and show you the location of all restaurants in the nearby area. You can also do things like tell it to play a certain song or artist from the music stored on your iPhone or ask it the Weather forecast for any given day. SIRI can also be pretty entertaining when asked random conversational questions. Questions such as "How old are you?" will cause SIRI to respond "Does this concern you?", "I didn't think so". Or saying silly things such as "SIRI I love you" will cause it to say "I'll bet you say that to all your Apple products". Overall it's a pretty nice added feature, but not a major selling point at this time. It's limitation is that it currently is only integrated with the standard apps that Apple provides on the iPhone. Once it is integrated with more of the third-part apps, I can see it becoming a seriously useful feature.

Overall I would definitely recommend the iPhone 4S. From the sleek hardware design, the beautiful camera, and the very large Apple App store, it's my top phone at the moment. The iPhone 4S has the battery life to last most people a full day and in terms of overall speed and ease of use, it is currently among the best available. The only people who I would not recommend the 4S to are current iPhone 4 owners. With all of the iPhone 4S's improvements, I don't feel like they're significant enough to spend more money to upgrade from your iPhone 4. You will be better off waiting for whatever iPhone Apple releases later this year. However if you're looking to purchase your first smartphone, tired of your old Blackberry or Android device, or just have an older iPhone 3GS or 3G, I would strongly recommend getting the iPhone 4S if possible. Using a smartphone has never been easier.

It is Locket AT&T

I brought this phone in december, when i realized there might a confusion between locked to AT&T or Factory Unlocked. I contacted the provider and they did say it is locked to AT&T, at that time the phone was selling for $ 649. Despite I sent it with package unopened, they cut off $30.00 on the refund, I really disappointed. Please note I paid for both shippings (sent and returned).

If you need a factory unlocked Iphone 4S, you bette not buy this one IT IS LOCKED TO AT&T.

The Truth about these locked phones

Buying directly from Appleor an Apple retail store (NOT Best Buy or anywhere else) is the ONLY way to get an unlocked iphone, and even then, it will only work with at&t or T-Mobile (GSM networks only).

If you buy one from anywhere else, regardless of what you are told, you will be getting a phone that is locked to a single network, and there's nothing you can do to fix it. Verizon may work with you under certain terms, but that's if you're lucky.

When they say "unlocked," they mean "partially unlocked" so that you can use non-US (i.e., foreign) SIM cards in the phone if you travel. When you're in the US, you are locked to the network of the mobile service provider that sold you the phone.

My 1st review after careful deliberation
After careful consideration of the reviews, I decided to try this device on my I phone 4s. I had been to both the web-site and multiple sites reviewing this product. I decided to order through amazon because I can just return the product if it doesn't work. I am training with coach for 2 Iron man races in 2013. Heart rate stuff important. reviews made me very cautious. I did double check all sources to make sure I have an I phone 4S as described on wahoo blue site. This is important.
GOAL
My goal was to be able to utilize my Iphone 4S to capture heart rate information, training zones, cadence, speed, etc. and to upload to my training peaks account online. I already use multiple APPS to get most information. My dilemma, Buy new Garmin watch or use I-phone 4S (either Ant+ or Bluetoothe). Decided to use bluetoothe and return if it does not work. I decided I would try just the heart rate monitor and see how it goes, then move onto the Speed/cadence later if all goes well. If it doesnt work, I could just return and not waist alot of time. Thanks Amazon.
SHIPPING
Shipping was very fast thru amazon prime..... in 2 days.
SETUP...easy
The product came in a box with few instructions (Slight negative), so I did go to the website to make sure that I followed the directions on the wahoo blue site [...] then followed link to "BLUE HR getting started guide" near the bottom of the page.
Next,
I went to the apple I-store and downloaded the wahoo fitness app prior to trying anything. Wet the transducer, put on the strap, and opened the Wahoo fitness app and followed the directions. this is the sequence... Run settings, heart rate, add a new device. and it paired. back to start page.....push GREEN (get ready) and the heart rate was displayed and it was working. Similar process with Endomondo pro.
Adjustable strap comfortable and adjustable. electrode pads stand out from the rest of strap, easy to wet.
HEART RATE INFO
I a drawer full of Heart rate straps, wore the Wahoo Blue heart rate monitor at the same time as my Polar FT1 and FT4 Coded on multiple 6-8-10 mile runs and 25 mile rides. Virtually identical information with both. Max on the Blue was 2 beats more than the Polar 1 and same on Polar FT4 coded. Average Heart rate the same on all. Have not worn this in the pool. Zones change smoothly and quickly. no lag time with heart rate changes.
UPLOAD
I found that the App that you use will determine upload to training peaks. With Endomondo, when you finish the workout, you must go to the website and upload from Endomondo. With Wahoo fitness you are given the option to upload each workout from either the iphone from workout history or at the end of the workout. Both are very easy. This is nice but will upload to a bunch of other apps also.
Not all apps worked with the Blue HR, some apps do not work. Sport-tracker does not work, you must use their heart rate strap. Conclusion is that some apps work and some do not, but I think that each app may or may not work, double check the list on the website for training peaks and wahoo blue. I know that Wahoo fitness does work. All data including heart rate zones uploaded along with maps and data. Conclusion, the apps control this heart rate monitor. Make sure the app you use is listed with wahoo blue Compatible Apps: Wahoo Fitness, MotionX-GPS, RunKeeper, Runmeter, Cyclemeter, MapMyRUN, MapMyRIDE, 321run, Endomondo, and more!
BATTERY USE
Been using for 2 weeks now, no problems.
All heart rate zones transferred to training peaks. Went on a 2 hour run yesterday and started at 80% battery on the I-Phone 4S. Turned off WiFi and closed all apps except both Endomondo and Wahoo Fitness. Left Blue tooth on obviously. Listened to music, had a 10 minute call while running, and had a set of headphones plugged into I-phone, I also turn off the display most of the time. Battery left after 2 hours.....65% (15% battery Usage). Did another similar 2 hour run and left the display on the entire time and I used 28% of battery over 2 hours . Conclusion, blue tooth isn't using much battery, screen monitor does.
CONCLUSION
I will move onto the Speed/Cadence and see how that works. So far very pleased with this heart rate monitor. Do not need to pair each time. once it is set up it seems to work. Have also used simultaneously with a Bluetooth headset, all works well. 2 Bluetooth devices at once. So far.....I liika dis.

Right off the bat, I'll say YES it was an "out of the box failure." But I'm rating it good anyway.

First things first - it came out of the box with a dead battery. Oops. Yeah, that's a bummer, maybe they got a bad batch of batteries from Sony or maybe these have been sitting on a shelf too long. Fortunately I have a drawer full of CR2032 cells for various other devices, so replacing the battery was a simple matter.

Upon inserting a new battery, it IMMEDIATELY paired with the open Wahoo Utility app on my iPhone 4S.

Now for the other weird stuff. I hope this can save others some confusion. And I blame this not on Wahoo or the device, but on Apple's implementation of Bluetooth 4.0 or possibly on the BT4 standard itself.

BT4 devices need to be paired not with the DEVICE, but with the APPLICATION. So logically, once it was paired with the Wahoo Utility app, I switched to the Wahoo Fitness app. It wouldn't pair. Because the Wahoo Utility was still sitting in the background, paired with the heartrate monitor. I had to pull up the task switcher on my iPhone, KILL the Wahoo Utiility app, and then try pairing again with the Wahoo Fitness app, and it worked immediately.

Same thing happened when I tried pairing with Runkeeper. Because the Wahoo Fitness app was still maintaining a connection in the background, the app had to be killed before Runkeeper would pair. But ultimately, it did pair, and once paired it was accurate and responsive.

The device works fine, but the technology is not intuitive, and Wahoo does a poor job of providing documentation or support, which prevents me from giving a 5 star review. But with a little bit of effort, I think this is still the best option for someone looking to integrate a heartrate monitor with their iPhone-based workout tracking routine.

If you buy one and have trouble with pairing, first make sure you're wearing the monitor - if it's not on your chest, it's probably asleep. Next, try swapping batteries. Next try killing any apps which have attempted to pair with it. Next try restarting your iPhone. If it doesn't work after that, send it back!

Very Nice, but I Prefer the Polar H7

Summary: This is a nice bluetooth heart rate monitor that uses the low energy bluetooth standard to communicate with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or 3rd generation iPad. It's a great choice, particularly if you like Wahoo's free fitness app. However, after trying this unit and the similar Polar H7 Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Sensor, I personally prefer the Polar. I'll break down some of the similarities and differences so that you can make your own choice.

1. Fit: The Wahoo unit is an elastic belt with a snap on each side, plus a small transmitter. You dampen the contact points on the belt, wrap it around your chest, then snap each side into one side of the transmitter, which then holds the belt closed. (It's hard to describe, but the belt doesn't literally connect - it as a gap which is bridged by the transmitter.) The belt has two slides that let you size it to fit, and is comfortable. I like that you can unhook the transmitter to turn the belt off, which saves power -- in older HRMs, the transmitter was built in and did not turn off until the belt lost contact.

The Polar unit is similar, except that the belt has a hook that holds it closed, then you snap the unit onto the belt after that. (Again, it's hard to describe, but with the Polar, the belt itself goes all the way around your chest and connects with a bra-strap style hook on the side. The transmitter then clips on top of the belt.)

Result: Tie - both units are comfortable and work well.

2. Compatibility: Both units use low energy bluetooth, which saves power, but is only built into the newest generation of devices. They both work fine with my iPhone 4S and my 3rd generation iPad, and are both rated compatible with the iPhone 5. (Some of the reviewers have complaints about the Polar's compatibility with some iPhone uses, but I've never had a problem).

Unfortunately, neither one is rated as compatible with android or windows devices, even if those devices have low energy bluetooth built in. That's unfortunate, and I hope that it gets resolved soon. (A few people have reportedly gotten the Polar to work in limited cases, and the Wahoo might too, but I would not count on it without a lot of research.)

The Polar does win on one compatibility issue -- it also transmits standard HRM data on a 5 gz band. As a result, it will show your heart rate on gym equipment that accepts standard HRM data, and works with my basic Polar watch, my rowing machine, etc. (In fact, maybe it works too well -- last week at the gym, it put my HR on my machine AND on my neighbor's!) I haven't been able to get the Wahoo monitor to show up on any of my non-bluetooth receivers, so if backwards compatibility is important to you, take a look at the Polar.

Result: Slight advantage to the Polar on backwards compatibility.

3. Apps: In my tests, both the Wahoo and the Polar work with Runkeeper. I don't have Endomondo, but understand they both work with that too. If you prefer one of those apps, then it's a wash. However, Wahoo's app works with Wahoo (obviously), and Digifit currently works only with Polar. I like Digifit a lot, so I prefer the Polar on this element, but your preference will obviously affect your vote. (Note that it costs a few dollars to activate cardio monitoring in Digifit, while the Wahoo app is free, but IMHO it's worth it).

Result: Depends on your app preference.

4. Price: The price of both units is likely to vary over time, so I'll let you do the comparison. As of the time of this review, the Polar is slightly less expensive, even if you are going to buy the full version of Digifit, but definitely check before you make your decision.

Summary: This is a great unit for a user with a newer iOS device, especially if you like the Wahoo app. The Polar H7 is a very close competitor though, so your choice will probably come down to which app you like better.

Great purchase

After Verizon changed its upgrade cycle that coincided with both of my phone upgrades, I was left to either replace my son's non-functioning phone by purchasing an iPhone 5 for over $600, wait for next year to upgrade/replace or pay $200 to repair my son's originally free phone. I opted to check out what was being offered for last year's iPhone on Amazon and found a reasonably priced slightly used iPhone 4 with a great deal of memory. The device works as expected, no blemishes (at least none that I could find and I think there was mention of typical minor wear and tear - I saw none but I think that has to be put out there for used/refurb devices) and all cords, chargers were included in packaging. It was delivered early and my son is thoroughly pleased to go from a free Samsung smartphone to an iPhone 4 (granted he wanted the 5 but he's 15 - he'll live...besides he's happy to be at the same level his friends are at with their phones). I will be purchasing my phone this way and going outside of Verizon's market from now on. This seller is outstanding, the service and quality easily exceeds expectations. Thoroughly pleased!!!!

does not fit iphone 5 or 5s

i have this case it black and green that i bought at best buy and it fits great so then i ordered two more for my wife and father. when i got these it looked the exact same until you try and put them on. both cases didn't fit over the edges of the phone not design wise but like the case had shrunk. i was talking to someone else about this and they had the same problem with the amazon version of this case.

Received 2 Knock-off cases

The actual case being advertised (the one manufactured by Belkin) is a fantastic, 5-star case. I know because I spent the $20 at a physical B&M store and have the authentic one on my own iPhone. My husband just got a new iPhone and so he wanted the case for himself and we were so excited to find it at such a good price on Amazon. Until we received it. Amazon, one of your suppliers is supplying you with FAKE cases. I initiated an exchange, and unfortunately, the second case is still a FAKE. So we're returning both and he'll just be shelling out the money for the real one from a store. The fake ones do NOT fit the device correctly-- they are not snug, there are visible gaps between the case and the edge of the phone. The smoky "tinted" sheerness is not the same. And there aren't serial numbers etched on the case. Amazon, please check with your vendors and/or listen to your customers.

So for those of you out there disappointed with this case, try to find one in a B&M store. The authentic Belkin case is quite nice and has definitely helped keep my iPhone in great shape for the last year. And just beware that sometimes "you get what you pay for" and "if it's too good to be true..." I'm sure some lucky Amazon customers received authentic cases, but I bet a lot have also received a fake one (or two), like we did.

I was very happy when I first received this case because the color was exactly what I expected.
HOWEVER, when I put the case on it did not fit my iPhone 5S at all. I had trouble pressing the buttons because they were off and the front corners were not protected at all. I absolutely do not recommend this product, very disappointing.

Outstanding protection with definite drawbacks - UPDATED

I recently switched to another case after over 7 months of hard use. Three reasons: 1) aesthetics, 2) the headphone jack, and 3)the screen protector. I've left my original review intact after the break.

Summary: While this case is no longer the best protection available for the iPhone 5, it's a great value as a solid no-frills case. This case is still compelling at its new price point despite how long its been on the market. See my original review below for more detail.

Additional Thoughts: The headphone jack issue and screen protector feel ultimately had me searching for a new case. Many of the newer cases, including some from Otter Box, are much more feature-rich and offer even better protection than this case at higher price points.

Updated Aesthetics: The utilitarian look and feel of the case turns out to have at least one major benefit: you can beat this case up without guilt. I had several major drops and bumps with this case. The result? Zero damage to the iPhone and negligible visible damage to the Otter Box rubber bumper. My newer case, while nicer to look at, doesn't tolerate wear and tear nearly as well.

Original Review (9/24)

Summary: If you're looking for the best protection for your iPhone 5 right now, this is the case you're looking for. The fit on the iPhone 5 is superb, and the peace of mind it will bring you is worth the cost of entry if protection is the utmost priority. The case makes some compromises to afford you that protection, which could be a dealbreaker if you're not totally onboard with a bulkier case. I'll detail those below.

Installation: Installation is a breeze if you've ever used an OtterBox case before (I hadn't). The best way to start is to open up the tab on the upper left corner by the volume controls, then pull the silicone bumper off the case with your fingertips. Things are easy from that point on.

Durability: Rock solid. I field tested this in NYC over the weekend, and the case acquitted itself very well. Wasn't at all worried about it, and minor bumps and the usual commuter jostling while trekking around the city were no match for this case. I haven't dropped it yet, but would be willing to bet the phone that it will survive the usual momentarily clumsiness onto city sidewalks.

Bulk/Aesthetics: These are the biggest--and related--points of contention. Much has been said about this, so I'll say this plainly: if you don't like the pictures of this case, nothing about seeing this in person will change your mind. From a usability standpoint, if you're a male wearing slim or skinny jeans, the front pocket is out of the question. Back pockets work surprisingly well, and retrieving the phone quickly is slower but still doable. If you're a female and wear skinny jeans, you'll need to carry this in your purse for sure. You'll also need to make room accordingly.

Feel: Somewhat subjective, but important enough to warrant mentioning. The screen protector that comes with the front panel of the hardshell interior doesn't quite sit flush the screen. As a result, the case takes off some of the "snappiness" of the UI. This is most noticeable when you lightly swipe the screen, since it sometimes doesn't register. Additionally, you can actually feel the screen depress slightly while working with the phone. This is less annoying than when I first noticed it, but it's still an issue I'm struggling with personally.

Headphone jack: The headphone jack is troubling, and this is where the bulk of the case works against it. Earbuds with square, 90 degree jacks (or even straight jacks that are bulkier than usual) will NOT fit on this case. The bulk of the case means that a 3.5mm that isn't straight and slim won't sit flush with the jack. This also applies for the auxiliary cables to connect to your car's entertainment system. (For reference, I'm using the Monster aux cables, which are slightly larger at the 3.5mm end.)

Lightning cover: I thought the cover for this was well done. The lightning connector sits well protected by a cover that integrates nicely with the case.

Recap/Bottom Line: This case is worth the 4 stars for the sheer amount of abuse it can withstand. The tradeoffs to usability and aesthetics are understandable, but noteworthy. If you've read this far and are still on the fence, you should probably weigh this case against a slimmer case with a separate screen protector.

Balanced review after testing it for a day with iPhone 5

I got my iPhone 5 today (through carrier sources) though it's yet to be activated and the first thing I did naturally was put the Otterbox Defender case on it. I had the Defender for my 3GS and it protected my phone all these years. Didn't have the iPhone 4/4S so I can't compare it to that. Quick impressions so far:

PROTECTION - Protection wise, the iPhone 5 Defender is at par with the 3GS. Industrial grade protection with complete coverage. Same concept and overall design, though the silicone feels slightly thicker and more solid in the 5. The silicone has a matte finish compared to the smooth finish in the 3GS, which hopefully should help avoid dust and lint - this was the only drawback with the 3GS case, it needed cleaning frequently.

BUTTONS/PORTS - Power and volume buttons are covered with silicone shaped like the buttons themselves. No problem pressing either of these buttons with the silicone. The headphone jack, charging port, and silent button have silicone plugs that can be pulled out to expose the jacks. (TIP - to open the plugs, insert nail and push the top silicone part higher to get behind the plug to pull it out. Hope this makes sense. The headphone plug is tiny and it can take some time getting used to opening it). The charging port plug, when opened, keeps snapping back into the case, which means it has to be held open with one hand to insert the charger. Insignificant issue, and I'm hoping that with use, this piece will loosen up a bit so that it stays open if needed. Opening at the back for the Apple logo is covered with a transparent plastic film. The front camera/speaker, the back camera/flash, and the two speakers at the bottom are left open and are the only exposed parts of the phone.

SCREEN COVERAGE - Clear plastic film on the screen integrated into the case, the touchscreen experience is as good with the film as it is without the case. The transparent film creates a tiny layer of air or moisture between itself and the screen, which can create watermarks on the screen. This was an issue with the 3GS as well. (TIP - I had read several forums for my 3GS that recommended applying baby powder before installing this case, but I personally didn't find that to be a lasting solution. Applying an Anti-Glare film to the phone's screen before installing the case was the best solution. I am still waiting for my Anti-Glare film to come in, but I installed a spare I had for my 3GS just to see if that solved the issue with the 5, and it did).

HOLSTER - The silicone is kept intact with two plastic tabs on the side. This really helps keep the silicone in shape and prevents it from stretching or loosening over time. These tabs also work as the locking mechanism for the holster. The case can be inserted facing in or out in the holster, a fine improvement by Otterbox. Most such holsters I have seen only allow face-in orientation (3GS allowed only face-in which I found annoying when going for a run). This holster has a fully rotating belt clip so that it can be attached vertically or horizontally on the belt. No chance of the case falling out, nice secure fit. The holster is much better and ergonomically designed than the 3GS version. It is easier to access the phone with this design.

Here are a few details that I would have liked to see improved/addressed:

- Front and back camera openings - the two openings are huge! The front camera/speaker/light sensor opening is one big opening. For the 3GS version (3GS only has speaker on the front, no camera) and from what I have seen for the 4S, the cases had a precision opening which provided better overall coverage. For the back, the opening is approximately 30-40% bigger than it should be for the camera and flash. It would have been nice to have more precise openings on both places for even better protection.

- Headphone jack plug - this perhaps has more to do with the placement of the headphone jack itself, but the case opening is really small and it's not very smooth to open the silicone plug. For the 3GS, the silicone plug went around the headphone jack to the back, which made opening it a breeze. They could have used the same design for the 5 as well. With the current design, it takes time opening the headphone plug. It's entirely possible it is just something that takes getting used to, or that the silicone will loosen over time making it easier to open.

- The iPhone 5 is a super sleek, light, and slick looking device. Putting the Defender case makes it bulky (more than doubles the thickness). Now this is a pro in that it offers super-protection which I cannot live without. The downside is that it takes away the aesthetic beauty of the iPhone.

I bought this in black when that was the only color available. Now it seems there are a lot more choices. Wish I had waited for the Glacier (just a personal preference)!

Other than these minor issues, I am overall very happy with this case and I hope to use it for several years to come, just I did with my 3GS Defender. Yes, it's slightly expensive, but it's also peace of mind.

UPDATE 10-12-12

The watermark issue seems to be persistent with this case and nothing seems to permanently help in this regard. The anti-glare film bridges the gap somewhat but only for a few days. The screen in the case lifts right back up after a few days and creates the watermark issue all over again making it difficult to use the screen. I am sending this back to get a different case. Yes, I want to protect my iPhone which is why I was willing to put up with the bulk of this case, but I can't give up functionality.

An Otterbox is an Otterbox

I have owned and used an Otterbox case for my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 and now, finally, for my iPhone 5.

These cases are great and offer a lot of protection. With that being said, you have to anticipate this case making your phone a little bit bulkier. I personally tend to love the added "bulk" that this case adds to my phone because I have very large hands and long fingers. This case gives my phone the extra bulk needed to allow me to grip it and text without letting my hands get fatigued or painful.

As with all of their other products, this case is extremely well-made and fits the phone perfectly. If you've never owned an Otterbox before then perhaps you should check out some pictures before deciding if this case is right for you. If you've ever owned an Otterbox... Then you know exactly how great these things are.

Here's a funny side story:

I once left my iPhone 4 (inside of its Otterbox, of course) on the of the roof of my car after the gym and drove away. While going 50 m.p.h I heard a huge "thud" on the side of my door and had no clue as to what it was. Long story short, I realized that my phone had basically fallen off of the roof, slammed into my door and hit the pavement and was completely fine. The case and the phone didn't even have a dent.

Great for the essentials!

I took a chance on this case- I had an Otterbox Defender for my iPhone 5 which I loved but I was intrigued by the idea of not having to carry a wallet for the essentials (driver license, credit card, debit card, and some Cash).

I can fit 3 cards in this case plus two folded bills of Cash. My "go to" card is always on top (it's the easiest to get out) and the case does exactly what I want it to do- carries the essentials so I grab my phone and go. It also protects my phone (it's the Commuter series, so it's not quite as rugged as the Defender but overall it's about the same size which isn't bad at all).

The cards inside are very secure and the case is designed so it's impossible for your stuff to fall out. My one complaint was that the screen protector it came with had stickers on it that didn't peel off cleanly and made it pretty much worthless so I don't use it- but I'm so satisfied with the case that it doesn't affect me giving it 5 stars.

More Trouble Than It Should Be

I like the idea of a wallet case for my iPhone and doing away with my wallet. The fewer things to carry, the better. But wallet cases are very limited. The idea is that they are cases for occasional use, such as when you are going out for the night and only want to carry an ID and credit card. This wallet case can only carry three cards or two cards and three folded bills.

Otterbox Commuter cases are two piece cases that have a silicone layer covered by a hard shell. They aren’t my favorite because the hardshell doesn’t quite fit right leaving tiny gaps. Two piece cases take more effort to get on and off which is more of a problem on a case made for occasional use. The black on black color scheme turns the handsome iPhone into an all-black design-free box.

Otter likes to put rubber plugs over the jack openings which offers extra protection, but is a pain when you want to charge or plug in headphones. The volume button covers work well, but the on/standby button cover make it stiff and lacking in tactile feel. Otter provides a clear screen protector and applicator card.

Cards fit in the wallet case by sliding down the back panel revealing the compartment. The slide is stiff and there is no grip for your finger to press against. You have to press against smooth sloping plastic. When you get the slide open, you have to dig you finger nail under the top card so you can pry it up and out.

This wallet case is too much trouble for me. But if it fits your needs, this case should offer good protection and durability. Two and a half stars.

The geek equivalent of the double-edged sword

This is another well made case from Otterbox. I've had Otterbox cases for my iPhones and iPads and they've always performed well. They aren't stylish, but they protect your device. I've used them for travel mostly, and have never been disappointed.

This "Wallet Case" checks all the usual Otterbox, um, boxes: Protective? Check. Grippy? Check. 80's Volvo-like Styling? Check. Yep, it's an Otterbox all right.

But one with a twist. Because this case resolves that nagging dilemma we all have: how do I carry my iPhone AND my credit and ID cards in one place?

Dilemma resolved. This case is that place.

Otterbox added a sliding tray on the back of one of their tough cases. From the front and back and the added "bump" isn't noticeable. In profile however or in the palm of your hand it's there alright. Think of the top of a 747 and you'll get the idea. A little curvature on an otherwise continuous line.

In that bump of a tray you can fit a pair of credit cards and your driver's license. Great for the minimalist traveler or a night out clubbing. That is if you go to hipster clubs where geeky dual-purpose cases are cool.

I don't go to clubs like that. I don't go to clubs. But if I did, this is the case I would take.

Go ahead and drop it while dancing crazily to the DJ's Devo dub: both your iPhone and credit cards will be just fine.

Just don't lose it. Then you'll never be able to call that girl in the Warby Parker frames who put her number into your phone. Plus you'll have no way to pay for the cab ride home. Double bummer, dude.

So there you go. The "OtterBox Commuter Series Wallet Case for iPhone 5 & 5S"--the geek equivalent of the double-edged sword.

As easy to install as any of the other screen protectors I've used, the retina display colors are barely muted at all, and it's so nice not having oily fingerprint smudges on my iphone screen all the time. Would definitely get these again!

Purchased this iphone for my youngest son's birthday---it came in a timely manner and came in very good/new condition. Everything worked fine and we are very satisfied with the purchase, especially my teenage son!

i bought this phone "brand new" "unlocked", well it sure was unlocked, but new? , not so much , after 5 months the phone started to have problems with one of the speakers so i went to an apple store because to my knowledge the phone was still under warranty ( 1 year), according to the representative at the apple store, the phone was bought more than a year ago, i was like ohhh no, i have proof that i bought it , and bam, im all cocky getting my receipt from amazon, right away i found it , and they guy is like , you see , this receipt doesnt have the EIN for this cell phone so we can accept it , i was like , im f....ed now, called amazon, for the first time in 2 years i had an almost bad experience , LOL because i called twice to ask for a receipt with the EIN on it , the sent it twice to my email, but it was the same receipt i had( no EIN on receipt) but the third representative, offered me an 80% refund on my purchase which i thought it was awesome because my plan was to get the phone fixed and sell it for $150.00, when i sent the phone, the very next day i received a call from amazon , letting me know that they had received the phone and that they where processing my refund, these guys are awesome, now why to me this was a good deal? , well i wanted the iphone 5 so, i used the money to upgrade.
